This was a live performance in a small club just before she passed away later that same year ! Eva Cassidy is absolutely captivating and mesmerizing in her vocal delivery ! One of the most underrated and sadly unknown singers in the USA ! Her stardom came posthumously when she was heard over the airwaves on BBC 2 in the UK two years later ! Shortly afterwards, the compilation album Songbird climbed to the top of the UK Albums Chart, almost three years after its initial release. The chart success in the United Kingdom and Ireland led to increased recognition worldwide. Her posthumously released recordings, including three number-one albums and one number-one single in the UK, have sold more than ten million copies.[ Amazingly the UK brought the attention to the world of this tremendous singer and I am very thankful for that ! She should be an American treasure and years later the world has taken notice ! I would suggest her rendition of "Fields of Gold " and "Songbird " as other wonderful songs to react to ! Personally I want to thank you for introducing Eva to your listeners and all the You Tube community it is so much appreciated ! Keep up the great work and keep posting my friend ! Your channel is so important and needed in the You Tube world ! Sending mush thanks and love from Canada ! 👍🇨🇦🇨🇦❤️❤️❤️

The small club where all her songs were recorded was owned by Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac) who organized the recordings and pushed the recordings to be played on BBC2. Before she died Mick organized her meetings with recording companies but they wanted to change her sound and arrangements so she turned them down.

Eva sang this song live at Blues Alley in D.C. in 1996...she was very sick and in pain from advanced stage cancer at the time which was the reason for the break in her voice during the last line of the song, yet she still delivered an amazing performance. Eva died at age 33 shortly after this was recorded. Since her death all of her previously unheard recordings have been released on several CD's and download and streaming services. Every one of her songs is well worth having and listening to...Eva was truly an old soul and a deeply emotional and powerful singer.

I am so glad you have reacted to this vocal legend. I never met Eva but I knew her Aunt Isabel Bligh and her grandmother Cass Cassidy. So many of our friends knew Eva before she died. It’s always been bittersweet to know the world did not discover her until she passed away from cancer. All three are now deceased. Great reaction! All of her covers on the Songbird album should be heard. Her guitar playing was exceptional too. She had perfect pitch and excellent voice control.

Even if I am a huge Angelina Jordan fan I have to admit that Eva Cassidy had the most beautiful voice ever. And she was a master in covering songs. Before Angelina's concert in 2019 they played an Eva Cassidy album, so I think Eva is a favorite of Angelina (or someone else in the family)

I would have not known about Eva Cassidy If it wasn't for Angelina Jordan, they kind of did a mash up together. If you have ever seen Angelina's golden buzzer moment in the background of that music is Eva Cassidy singing somewhere over the rainbow Eva Cassidy. Made me cry when she sang somewhere over the rainbow, because I had heard that she shortly died afterwards ...After that Eva Cassidy certainly has become one of my favorite singers of the past but again I thank Angelina Jordan, for introducing me to all the greats of the past and future and that's including Eva Cassidy.....

A beautiful reaction to a beautiful rendition of a classic performance. Eva wasn’t appreciated in her short life. Now she’s immortal thanks to the folks who can listen and feel the depth of her talent. There is a short video on KZbin of Mick Fleetwood talking about how he tried to get her a break. Her whole story would make a sad but deserving premise. BTW, you are very beautiful.

Judy Garland first sang this song on screen in "The Wizard of Oz" (1939). She sang it many times during her career, including on TV. Eva Cassidy has wonderful, playful phrasing, stopping and starting in inventive places. (I like her turning "the rainbow, way..." into "the rainbow way" because her way was, indeed, the rainbow way.) Her guitar playing is masterful. I like how the instrumental supports her voice. At the end of the song, the "happy little bluebirds" come in on the guitar just before she begins singing about them.

A little over 20 years ago on a cross country trip from Atlanta to Los Angeles with my adolescent son, we had stoped for gas somewhere out west. A nice lesbian couple at the next pump asked if we had far to drive. When I told them we had another 1000 miles or so, they reached into their console and pulled out the Eva Cassidy CD that contains this song. Take this, they said. It will make your journey more pleasant. I was pretty touched at their generosity even though I had never heard of Eva Cassidy before. As we drove away, I popped the CD into the player. They were right. It made the rest of the trip much more pleasant.

Well Lookey here! I was just going to suggest this one to you and it popped up as a suggested video so here are I am! I found Eva late in life by way of some CDs that we received in my Sister in laws estate. She truly was an unknown here in the USA until she was discovered by DC Go-Go Artist Chuck Brown. He was getting ready to feature her in one of his shows when she became very sick and then passed away at a very young age from cancer. The world is finally waking up to the beauty that this special soul exuded through her music, She was a great blues singer but really could sing anything and it would sound like gold being poured over you. Incidentally, the first time I heard this one, was through a video that used graphics of the world we live in and all it's beauty. As she reached the crescendo in the song I burst out in tears knowing she is now in Heaven and I still cry every time I hear that part. What a loss for the people of the world and at the same time, what a gift she left for us. Listen to her version of WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD. ♥

This is about the tenth different reaction to this I have heard in the past two weeks. I want to say, if I hear this a thousand more times, I will be forced to burst into tears of joy every time within the first four notes she plays on that guitar. If someon was to drill holes into my tear ducts, the water would not flow any easier. I am so totally moved by this woman's passion and ability to interpret a song by her singing and guitar playing. So so sad that in her time it was so hard to find a Record Label that would agree to record all the different genres she wanted to sing in. Even the company that recorded this actually failed. She passed away from cancer shortly after this was recorded back in 1996. I believe the song was originally written for the movie The Wizzard of Oz and sung beautifully by the very young Judy Garland who was the star of the movie, back in 1939. Others have recorded the song very nicely, in particular in recent years by Tommy Emmanuel strictly as a guitar instrumental. He did it very much in a style that paralleled Judy's singing of it. But you know God has a way of taking someone very specially gifted by Him, and transcending it through time from 1996 to to a World that needs to be touched and lifted out of very troubling times because of a wicked World, and making this song one of the most emotionally transformed things of beauty, even 28 years after her tragic death. Eva Cassidy went from covering this song to completely owning it and by doing so has changed many many lives for the better, AMEN and AMEN.

Music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by Yip Harburg, the song was written for Judy Garland to sing in The Wizard of Oz from 1939. MGM executives cut the song from the movie because they thought it slowed down the film. The producer, Arthur Freed, told L. B. Mayer, " The song stays, or I go. " He won. All that to say what this young lady does with the song is magical, reinventing the melody with a poignancy few have ever reached.

Brett, you just discovered one of the rarest and most beautiful voices ever recorded. Sadly, Eva left us too soon due to cancer. She knew she was ill when she made this recording, one of a dozen songs she sang that night at the Blues Alley jazz club. If you want to hear her do her magic with another song, listen to her version of Sting's Fields of Gold. Years later after she had gone, Sting discovered Eva's music. He was blown away by her rendition of his song and put a copy of her Songbird CD into record producer David Foster’s hands who quoted him saying, “‘If you want to hear the greatest version of my song ever’-he didn’t say it in an egotistical way-he said, ‘listen to Fields Of Gold with this girl, it’ll change your life.’ And her voice is life-changing, she’s that spiritual.” BTW, when AGT's Heidi Klum hit the Golden Buzzer for Angelina Jordan's version of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody they played Eva Cassidy's version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. You can hear the lines 'Where dreams really do come true." They certainly did for Angelina that memorable night. Love your animated knowledgeable reactions.

Thank you for doing this reaction and bringing Eva Cassidy to all of your listeners! I’m glad other watchers of your channel gave you some of Eva‘s story. Elton John has said her voice is one of the three best female voices he’s ever heard. Just to remind you about the original context of Over the Rainbow… The young girl, Dorothy Gale felt that no one understood her. It was that point in the plot that Dorothy sings this song. Of course, the great Judy Garland made her film debut in the Wizard of Oz, this 1939 film. Her character, Dorothy, sang this emotional thought… If only I could go over the rainbow where troubles melt like lemon drops… . The producers almost did not include this musical number because they thought it was so depressing. In the original release, it wasn’t included. It was edited out. Fortunately, it was placed back in. But the emotion was of mournful longing and desire to be away from home. By the end of the film, Dorothy realizes that there is no place like home. Do you remember that quote. How ironic, how amazing that as Eva Cassidy sang this song, she hadn’t a year left to live. Tragic. What a loss to the world. it’s amazing that you did this reaction this month. Eva‘s first orchestral album was just released. You can hear it on Spotify. It’s so brand spanking new. The technology finally exists in which Eva’s vocals have been lifted from some of her best recordings, and combined with the London symphony, orchestra. March, 2023, has seen Eva Cassidy’s newest album released. It debuted at number nine on the UK charts. I think her vocal and emotional range is shown in the selection, Autumn Leaves, if you would want to react to that.

She had battled cancer for quite sometime. her Over the Rainbow was knowing that she would fly free from pain. Her ability to capture that emotion thru this song is astounding.

Eva has perfect pitch which is so rare. Sadly she died at 33 and never had a recording contract. All her songs are live and she plays such great guitar.

I try to watch all of the reviews of Eva, and particularly "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". I'm an old man, and this one still tears me up. Interestingly, she didn't consider herself a good guitar player, but her arraignment on this just added so much to it. Just to give you an idea of the kind of person she was, knowing her time here on Earth was limited, she wanted to do a show to thank all of her local fans. She was in a lot of pain in the end and with morphine as her friend, she did the show. The very first track she played....."What a Wonderful World". As to this one, whatever her reasons, I very much would like to go to the place she is singing about!!

How could you not know Judy Garland’s iconic version of this classic tune! For Shame! This child’s sweet version is also incredible!

Eva Cassidy completely took over anything she sang making it her own. Judy Garland's rendition was sung from a little girls perspective. Like so many of her covers, Eva completely transformed it to bear the weight of the deep cares and burdens of a grown woman. Please, Please, Please, check out her rendition of "The Autumn Leaves", "Fields of Gold", and "Stormy Monday" you will NOT be disappointed! I promise!! "Stormy Monday" in particular demonstrates the sheer power of her Pipes and the depths of her blues!

I didn’t read all the comments so my take of the break in her voice at the end of the song is that she was sick leading up to and during this performance. She has the voice of an angel. She is probably doing a lot of solos in heaven right now with the angelic choir.

Peerless version of this song...and you're exactly right: it's a melancholy song at heart. What a gift. Still makes me sad that she died so young.

I love Eva's style. I am sorry that I didn't know about her before she passed. I got into her as a comparison to the singers with Celtic Woman from Ireland. As much as I love a lot of their songs I really love her versions of their standards. Another vocalist you might like is Lisa Kelly from the Celtic Woman. Lisa and Eva do great renditions of "Fields of Gold". That was my first exposure to them both and both of their versions, while different, are exceptional.
