His 1987 hit single 'Barcelona' saw Freddie sing alongside with one of the world's most revered and respected opera singers, Montserrat Caballé. The song was a huge success around the world, and Freddie achieved his dream of singing opera with his most beloved opera singer. Yes, Freddie wrote the song for her.

Freddie was one of the most diverse singers I've ever heard. Freddie & Montserrat recorded a whole album together and there are two other performances on KZbin that are fantastic. "The Golden Boy" as mentioned by someone else and "How Can I Go On". The song Barcelona was used in the opening ceremonies for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona but sadly Freddie passed away a year before and would never see the great honor done to his song. Montserrat was a world renowned soprano and was known as "La Superba" in the opera world. She was Freddie's favorite singer. They really had great chemistry together and a mutual love and respect that lasted the rest of their lives. I am so glad that you enjoyed this and I hope you'll check out the other two songs mentioned above!

A painting !! .... great analogy. It's so amazing that Freddie left us this, his legacy, before he died - and that he got to create his dream with Monty. You need to do The Golden Boy - the mix of rock, opera and soul.

Great reaction, and analysis of this amazing duet. From everything thing posted about them, they truly loved each other as friends. Freddie called her Montsy.. he shared his illness status with her, so she knew he likely wouldn’t be alive to perform this at the Olympics in 1992. I believe she probably could have blown him off the stage if she really wanted to ‘go there’, but, as you so eloquently said.. they complemented each other rather than competed. Thank-you.. and please consider reacting to other songs on this album they did together.

It was a huge experience for that time - one of the greatest opera singer had no fear to sing with a non opera singer and of the top of this - he was no hetero and had aids - unthinkable, nobody would be that foolhardy to risk the career. Monserrat was so famous and great and didn’t care. I am not sure if somebody who lives today can imagine how risky that was. It was not good for your reputation of an opera singer to collaborate with other genres or omg with somebody who was not morally integer. Shout out to a great person - Caballe 👏 Love from Austria/Europe 🇦🇹

That was a fantastic analogy. I've never heard their combo described so well. They each did their own "thing" and alone would have been good, but the combination of the two is greater than the sum of the parts.

I love this album so much! ❤ Freddie has said Montserrat has the most beautiful soprano voice and wanted to capture it. They were supposed to sing this at the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona but Freddie died the previous year. 😭 You should check out "How Can I Go On" from the same album. It's such a beautiful song! I like it even more than Barcelona.

Don't forget, that Freddie was an untrained singer. He said in an interview modestly „You can be operatic, but that doesn't mean that you are an opera singer.” Montserrat the great diva was brave enough to dive herself into a whole new musical world that Freddie offered to her, because she very soon realized The Musician in Freddie.

HEY HON... The two MOST AMAZING SONGS on the Barcelona album are: "EXERCISES IN FREE LOVE" and "ENSUENO" ("Exercises In Free Love" is a Demo vocal exercise that Freddie recorded, singing Montserrat's SOPRANO part... Some reactors mistakenly think it's Montserrat singing! "Ensueno" is the finished song - a duet - with Montserrat singing the soprano part that Fred had sung in the first version, and Freddie singing with her in OPERATIC BARITONE... something Montserrat said she "talked Freddie into doing" and then "gave him pointers" for.)

This song was written for Montserrat as Barcelona was the city of her birth. If you pull up the translation of the Spanish parts she is singing it adds another dimension to it. Just beautiful

Is funny that at the beginning of every reaction I’ve seen of this song everybody think Freddy is the star. At the end all wonder who is she. Monserrat carries the whole weight of the song and Freddy knows it. Once Freddy was asked who has always been his biggest idol as a singer. He didn’t doubt: Montserrat Caballé.
