One of my favorite zeppelin tunes, especially the live version with Jimmy's violin bow solo on his guitar...omg!!!!!!!, parents yelled at me for how much I listened to it and how loud lol, and they the ones that gave it to me hahah

Less is more. The song unfolds with little need for explanation....... but only to listen and hear it play out.

The import of "Hey You" really takes some understanding of the whole Pink Floyd discography and "The Wall" in particular. This song has a stand alone quality which is why Waters conceded to Bob Ezrin in moving this track to the beginning of Side 3 of the album. In that way it is easy to find as a single play. And "Comfortably Numb" is a good Side 3 closer. But, here it loses its meaning. Originally, it was placed after "Comfortably Numb" as the last song on Side 3. So, in short here is what is happening. Pink, the main character of the album has supposedly isolated himself off from the outside world both physically and mentally. So by the beginning of Side 3 Pink is all comfortable in his isolation as his brain wanders through different TV shows of his past. Lurking in the back of his mind is his former life as a rock 'n' roll musician (we are channeling Syd Barrett here). A part of his mind wants to free itself from the isolation and enjoy that energy of the stage. His mind conjures up a doctor's visit who gives him some medication to snap out of his lethargy and prepare him to take the stage once again. That's where "Comfortably Numb" ends. "Hey You" is Pink's awakened mind trying to connect with the audience on a personal level before the show where he will metaphorically spit on the audience. Waters is reflecting on his own encounter with the audience in Montreal during the Animals album "In The Flesh Tour". An incident that led to his writing of this album. And an incident that after the fact truly horrified him. Would the audience forgive him and help him carry the burden of that stone around his neck. The stone that would otherwise drown him. This is a direct reference to the song "Dogs" on the "Animals" album. When the burden of taking care of a dog outweighs its usefulness it is simply drowned. Being useless, a rope is attached to a stone around the dogs neck and it is drowned in the nearest river. That's what is going on here and Roger sings that last refrain.

I don't like remastered bc a lot of times you hear things that weren't in the original recording. And it's not things that were there and we just couldn't hear them before. It's just a money grab, imo. Yes, Mugs you nailed it. Robert's voice is another instrument in the band. You hear him a lot doing a call and response with Jimmy on guitar. Have you seen them live yet? Oh boy, you're in for a treat when you do. Biden's got my money acting kinda funny right now or I would buy you a coffee. But you asked for suggestions so here's another one to throw on the list. It's one of my FAV live performances by these masters and the song is called, How Many More Times, from 1970 at the Royal Albert Hall. I don't think any of their live performances duplicate the album but I know this DEF does not. This is a 20-minute jam session of them skipping around diff genres seamlessly, all sandwiched in the middle of the album version of the song. Don't know if you can do it bc it's so long, but you won't regret watching it. Here's the link, my friend. Peace out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q2WWepp5nMSsjdksi=wI1LhXPO9HVqyoTs

With Floyd it's generally the studio version that is the most intense and deep. Seeing their live stuff is interesting but it doesn't have the same feel as their polished product.

It's musically very deep, but lyrically, some groupie running around on Plant is unworthy of it. To me it sounds more like a combat vet fighting PTSD.

Remaster seems to have ruined the bass line. It’s the best part of the song (along with Bonham’s fills)and it got Jason Newsteaded in the new mix. If Jimmy Page did the remaster, that would explain. Effing guitar players and their egos. Hahaha!

Everyone will tell you, songs from a concept album should be heard in the broader context, for maximum effect. Not as easy to do in 2024, when no one records proper albums anymore. But once you've heard the complete album a time or two, you might like the film version that featured Bob Geldof. It was impressive. I think even critics liked it.

The lyrics are about Roger Waters, the bassist, losing his bloody mind! It is clearly evident that it is a fact that he lost it considering how he left the band and bc of his continued feud with the remaining band members.

Another "flavor" of Zeppelin that you might like is "Hey Hey, What Can I Do?" Most reactors are not aware of it. Until I was 22, the only way you could hear that song in the US was by requesting it on the radio. And it was my #1 Zep song for a long time.

Jimmy Page started 'working' on this song when he was in the Yardbirds begore he formed Led Zeppelin. There are a few videos around of him performing this back in 1967. He used a cello bow back then. It is interesting to see how this song 'evolved' over time. IMO the best performance of this is the Madison Square Garden 1973. That video will answer your questions.
