To catch an eel in NZ you just run a piece of fishing nylon over a creek - tied to 1 tree on one side of creek to a tree on the other side of the creek. In the center of the line over the creek you tie another piece of fishing line with a piece of raw animal fat on the hook just above the water. Set this up any time of day and leave it alone until morning then go get your eel. If theres an eel in the creek it will now be hooked. Never fails.
