According to legend, the band on the Titanic did indeed perform "Nearer My God to Thee" as the ship sank.

Harry used to introduce this song by saying today's entertainers, including him, are like the dance band on the Titanic. Their job is to distract people from the literal and figurative icebergs that threaten us in a dangerous world.

I was just thinking about other Chapin songs probably very few people today have heard and there are a ton. "Mail Order Annie" or "A Better Place to Be" would be really good for Britt.

One of my favorites. When the Titanic movie came out the chorus of this song kept playing in my head. Slightly lightened the mood.

Harry wrote so many songs about things that really happened. You still need to react to "Mr. Tanner," my personal favorite.

These two are amazing songs by Harry. Mr Tanner, Better Place To Be. I really miss him. Saw him in concert three times and the wife and I had a great time each time. After being in some hopeless situations in work, I was known to break into the chorus from this song.

"A Night To Remember" (1958, black and white) based on Walter Lord's researched book is generally considered the Most Accurate movie about the sinking of the Titanic, and so should be considered viewing. But Hollywood, prior to James Cameron's 1997 movie, had already in 1953 released "Titanic" starring Barbara Stanwyck and Clifton Webb. This version has a stirring ending scene of the men singing in unison, to the women out in the ocean in their lifeboats, just prior to the Titanic sinking.

I really believe he is underrated and unknown today. If you get CDs (showing my age) I would highly recommend The Gold Medal Collection, it is a double album honouring him for him posthumously being awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his spearheading and devoting himself to many charitable works. It also contains a few snippets of interviews which highlight the wisdom and greatness of the man

Welcome to the Chapin fan club. Best story teller. So many great songs. To see more of the humourous side try 30000 pounds of bananas (the live version from Hamilton Ontario is the best version) and odd job man. For more that are like movies A better place to be., Mail order Annie and the Mayor of Candor lied. Also Mr Tanner. But you really need to react to Sniper. An absolutely amazing song based on an actual event

I have such a sweet connection to the music of Harry Chapin. My mother and biological father finalized their divorce in 1974 when I was 5. 3 years later my mother married a gentleman named Ron who was a big fan of Harry and Bob Seger among others. For four years, from 76-80, my parents, Ron and Darlene and two other couples they knew went to benefit concerts done by Harry. Tragically, that all ended, in 1981, when Harry Chapin died from internal injuries from an auto accident in New York. He was only 38. My mom, at the time, was 32 and my stepdad was 33. It's very sad 😢 hearing anything from him now because my stepdad passed away last August.

Not the drummer. He said he was strumming so, he was playing something with strings. There is a hint that it was a guitar but that instrument was quite rare for a band that played to that echelon of society at that period of time. If there were guitars being played on the Titanic it would most probably down in steerage where all the poor people were.

First time I heard this song. Harry was a geat storyteller. His life was too short. Died in a car crash on the LIE in NY. Another great song was W.O.L.D., about life as a radio DJ. (familiar to me). Another great song was "I Wanna Learn A Love Song". Good reaction Britt although I think you could interrupt the song quite as often. 😎
