I wouldn't characterize the ending as Sad at all. - - To the contrary, that was an amazing celebration and tribute to a man's life who obviously had a profound impact on those around him. - - May we all be so blessed to have a send off like that.

I'm surprised you didn't recognize Brudda Iz' version of "Over the Rainbow." It has been used many times in TV and movies. Iz was a beloved institution in Hawaii. From WikiPedia -- "On July 10, 1997, the Hawaiian flag flew at half-staff for Kamakawiwoʻole's funeral. His koa wood casket lay at the state capitol building in Honolulu, making him the third person (and the only non-government official) to be so honored. Approximately 10,000 people attended his funeral. Thousands of fans gathered as his ashes were scattered into the Pacific Ocean at Mākua Beach on July 12, 1997."

Sweet reaction Britt. Iz was a wonderful Christian man from the island. This song is his version of the Judy Garland song. He also did his version of it's a "It's a Wonderful Life" and also infused the 2 songs together too sometimes when he sang them. God blessed him and his family and his songs. He was well loved on the island and around the world and still is. It was a sad but happy celebration when they did his ashes just as he asked. God bless you too and your family. 🙏❤

This is a beautiful and unforgettable version. Iz puts his own unmistakeable spin on this classic song. My personal favourite version is an incredibly moving acoustic interpretation by the late (and great) Eva Cassidy. It's something that is definately worth a listen to even if you choose not to react to it. I've seen a lot of reactions to Eva singing 'Over the Rainbow' and everyone was moved by it. :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKPHaYmhqblrrrs

For me as well 3 versions of Over the Rainbow that stand far and above all others: the original, of course, by Judy Garland; this beautiful version by the world ambassador IZ; lastly, my favorite of all, the emotional version by Eva Cassidy who died much too young, at the age of 34 years, of melanoma cancer which spread. She passed about 10 months after recording her now famous version. I encourage all reading this to search her version and give it a listen. Google her personal story as well as it is deserving of a movie. Mark

It's "sort of" the same song. Judy Garland sang Over the Rainbow in the Wizard of Oz in 1939. In the 1950s Louis Armstrong revived it combining it with the song What A Wonderful World. "IZ" then revived that combined song adding a Hawaiian flavor. It was used in several movies and TV shows before he passed away. This video is a tribute to him and to him singing this song, which became his signature sound

My family and I were blessed to live in Hawaii for three years, and Brudda IZ passed away during the time we lived there. Even though we were "haoles," (white people, and to many Hawaiians, the same as "dumb haoles") we found the majority of Hawaiians to be very friendly and hospitable. However, we wouldn't allow our very white, very blonde daughter to attend public school as a 7th grader as it was almost assured she'd be physically assaulted on a regular basis, so home-schooled her for her own safety. Hawaii is a paradise, and everyone should have visiting Hawaii on their "bucket" list. Hawaiian culture is amazing. I'll never forget a church service I attended where a native Hawaiian said the true meaning of Aloha is to give, and to give, until you have nothing left, and then to give some more. It's shameful what we (the USA) did as a nation to the Kingdom of Hawaii, very much in the same vein as what was done to the native Americans and native Alaskans. I believe we as a country have worked hard to make amends, and we should continue to do so. Sorry for the "lecture," but just a part of my education after living in Hawaii.

The only scene sadder than that was when the ER staff learned of his passing when a letter from his wife was read aloud to the group. My dad is a “native Hawaiian.” He is Hawaiian/Chinese, but he was born and raised in Hawaii. We grew up on this music. Even though he joined the military and moved to the mainland before I was born, he tried really hard to teach us his songs and culture. ❤ Unfortunately, by the time he retired from the military, he had seven kids. They didn’t want to relocate that many people back to Hawaii, so we stayed here on the mainland.

The video itself is beautiful - his smiles, IZ in the pacific, the rainbows, Kilauea (I think) erupting in the background and then a multitude celebrating IZ and what he gave to them - it's wonderful. Just think The Wizard of Oz and Judy Garland singing this was in 1939!!

Same song different arrangement, IZ's version is a combination of folk/world/country. Judy Garland's version was a ballad. Eve Cassidy's arrangement was folk. IZ weighted 1000 pounds at his death in 1997. "The Voice of Hawaii" was honored with a tradition Hawaiian funeral where 10,000 people attended; cars and trucks honked there horns and the Hawaiian flag was flown at half staff.

Brudda IZ was a beautiful person and personified the best of the Hawaiian people and culture. During the ceremony of giving his ashes to the sea the truckers on Oahu sounded their horns and it sounded like the island itself was mourning. I love everything he did from his start with the Makaha Sons of Niʻihau to his last songs but two of my favorites are his version of "Take Me Home Country Roads" and his heart rending rendition of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". 1) You absolutely must watch The Wizard of Oz sometime, it is a classic; 2) Yes, millions of us watched it every year, back in the pre-VCR days when the network would show it every year (same for Sound of Music); 3) its a long-ish movie and lots of us fell asleep (or were sent to bed) before it ended, more than once; 4) Judy Garland was a phenomenal singer, and her original rendition of Over the Rainbow is and always will be the benchmark against which all others will be measured; 5) this renditions is very, very different, and yet it is also heartbreakingly beautiful - so much so that it really has earned a place as one of the two definitive renditions, and least in my mind.

Same lyrics- different arrangements. His funeral turned out THOUSANDS Of people who lined the shores and on boats as his ashes are scattered into the ocean. Also, if you ever go to Hawaii- avoid commercially owned/ investor-owned places and frequent Native businesses. The Natives are being "Priced out of Paradise"- I have cousins that were forced to leave their Native Hawaii (and her husband is indigenous roots) because the investment companies are buying up the homes and turning them into vacation rentals - which in turns raises the property tax, cost of living/ food, and the rent for even one of their small houses for the natives.

Between this version and the 1939 version from Judy Garland, Somewhere Over The Rainbow is one of my favorite songs.

This is Iz's version. The classic is very different rhythm but same words and tune. Check out the story of it's recording. Iz rang his producer up at night to record it as he had sudden inspiration... magic. At 4:40 you talked about it being Polynesian , it was his people releasing his ashes at sea. Gone too young. Much loved.

This is the song Judy Garland immortalized in the 1939 film. Iz just made it his own in the most beautiful way.

This song makes me homesick. I’m a Lahaina girl, and have missed it every day since we moved. I watched Lahaina burn the last 2 days. I have friends missing, people lost their pets. Please donate to your local Red Cross.

I loved on Honolulu for six months, and they have rainbows almost everyday, and fireworks at night at the beach most days too. Love Iz.❤

I stumbled on this song years ago. Thought it was a great version, I was actually looking up this song kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKGZeYOae899ndU but couldn't remember the artist. KZbin gave me Iz so I watched it. Looked up some more about him and found out he was dead etc. Still a great version.

Bruddah Iz is singing his version on the Island he was born and raised. Lots of rainbows in Hawaii. He passed away at 36 from complications of obesity. And the last part at the ocean and they blow the horn is the burial of Iz. They celebrated his death. And yes same song as Judy sang i love her version but i love his more! Lots of people play this at funerals now.

Kamakavivo'ole (kah mah kah vivo olay) The canoe that they poured IZ's ashes from is the famous Hokulea ( hoh koo lay uh) which has travelled all over the world. The apostrophe in Hawaiian is a glottal stop and is called an Okina.

It is definetly the same lyrics and based on the same tune, but Israe's unique Hawaiian take on it. I've seen other videos of him singing this but hadn't seen this tribute with his ashes being spread in the ocean--very appropriate for him!!!

It is seldom a cover can sound better than the original. It's more upbeat and maybe why I think it's better. No doubt others will have a different opinion.
