I saw Jimmy on one tour through Canada, and he opens the show with an invitation that the audience is welcome to heckle him as much as we wanted. The proviso being that the heckle be intelligent and we be prepared to get savaged. People sit as close as possible just so they can get his attention and torn apart by his quick wit. I've seen a lot of comedians and Jimmy Carr is one of the funniest of all that I've seen.

I’ve been to see Jimmy a few times, try to go whenever he’s on tour, would recommend it to anyone who likes a good laugh. Best part about going to the smaller shows is that he will interact with the audience a lot more than he does for the filmed shows, and that’s saying something considering he already speaks to the audience a lot in the shows you see on TV. Plus, after the interval he usually comes out for the second half of the show armed with a clipboard and pen with new jokes he’s written but hasn’t tried yet, so you get to hear those jokes before anyone else, as well as hear the jokes that don’t make it in to the routine. He’ll stop after telling the joke to write someone on his clipboard, taking notes about how the joke landed. I know all comedians use smaller venues to test out new material but it’s rare to see them with a pen and pad taking notes. Most will just do the show and decide what worked and what didn’t after they’ve finished, so it’s cool to see the process live and see someone who doesn’t mind slowing everything down and letting the jokes breathe taking notes. Maybe that’s just me that enjoys that type of thing, but it’s cool.

A lot of European and Australian comics play off the crowd. Small shows in the US do the same but rarely big, recorded events and shows. Over there it is very common. Dara Ó Briain is a great Irish (if you couldn't guess by the name) comedian that makes every show different by messing with the crowd at each event.

The one thing you NEVER want to do is call attention to yourself at a comedy show. I saw a world famous comedian (performing in the round) and some folks showed up late for the show ... and had to walk right past the stage to get to their seats. The comic saw them coming and stopped the show and was just watching them going by, then he stopped them and proceeded to have some fun with them for the next 10 minutes! It was funny as hell. I bet those folks won't be late like that again!

You would never sit that close?? I went to Charlie Goodnights for my birthday one year (my wife got me tickets because i am a fan of the comic) to see Christopher Titus. I wasn't just front row. I was front row where i had to set my drink on the stage. He did a great job that night, and afterwards me and my wife went outside and met him and got our picture taken with him. Btw, if anyone else is a fan and hasn't seen him, here is a tidbit of info: that dude is a lot bigger than i thought he was. I was a hair over 6 ft at the time and he was a good 3-4 inches taller than me, at least.
