I grew up with Joe Cocker's music. He was an English singer known for his gritty, bluesy voice & dynamic stage performances that featured expressive body movements. He recorded a few Beatles' songs "With A Little Help From My Friends", "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" & "Something". Other hits were "Up Where We Belong" (a duet with Jennifer Warnes), "Delta Lady", "Darling Be Home Soon", "Cry Me A River", "Feelin' Alright", "The Letter", "You Are So Beautiful" etc.

When interviewed he said that they wanted to create a Waltz. Remember the original Beatles version was a poppy 4/4, Joe absolutely transformed it with tension, gospal spiritual backing, and pain. You would be forgiven for thinking they were completely different songs. If she knew the roots of this song she would have been even more stunned, I think.

This was originally a Beatles song, but don't go looking for it as your first Beatles experience. Their version is much faster and done in an old fashioned "Vaudeville" style. You REALLY need to check out the Beatles, often rated as the greatest, most creative band of all time. Just when you think you've got it they change their style. Go for it Brit. :)

I read somewhere that the backing singers at Woodstock were stuck in the humongous traffic jam so The Grease Band had to do the best they could.
@bobknightfolk
@bobknightfolk Жыл бұрын
The orignal recording had female vocalists, so the guys in the band had to cover their singing parts at Woostock. Remember, Joe and his band (The Greaseband) were English, they probably couldn't afford to take two female vocalists all the way from England to sing on one song. Joe's voice was younger and better at Woodstock.

I have a request that I think you will love, The Band (that’s the band’s name) with The Staple Singers doing a song called “The Weight”. Not sure if you are familiar with The Staple Singers but they WILL take you to church for sure. Mavis Staples is a complete legend in my mind and still singing in her 80’s. She sang with Hozier a few years back on his song “Nina Cried Power” which is a powerful song and lyrical masterpiece! You will love that one too! Please check them both out.

The keyboard instrument is the legendary Hammond B-3 Organ and Leslie Speaker Model 122R. There is also a Leslie Model 122 however, it does not have reverb. The original Hammond B-3 was manufactured in Chicago, IL. FROM 1955-1974. It is the Hammond model preferred by jazz and rock organ players, such as Fats Waller, Wild Bill Davis, Brother Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, Sonny Burke, Keith Emerson, Charles Earland, Jon Lord, Brian Auger, Steve Winwood, Procol-Harem, Santana, Joey DeFrancesco, and Barbara Dennerlein. Jimmy Smith popularized the Hammond organ, and its technique of using drawbars and pedals. Having found success in jazz, the Hammond organ became popular in rhythm and blues, including Booker T. & the M.G.'s and other Stax Records artists. The Hammond was one of the first mass-produced musical instruments which combined the electrical, mechanical and acoustic worlds-it is a keyboard instrument that could produce totally new sounds, and at the same time "imitate" other acoustic instruments. The production of electromechanical organs ceased in 1974. Thereafter, Hammond built fully electronic organs. Today, Hammond-Suzuki range of electronic draw bar organs, starting with the 2002 release of a digital B3 model that mimics the design and functions of the classic B3 (without the weight). This model, as well as newer units, can be partnered with real, mechanical, rotor speaker cabinets, also from the company. Hammond-Suzuki now manufactures organs in Elmhurst, Illinois, just outside of Chicago.

The most celebrated Super-Spaz of the late Sixties/Seventies. You should've seen him in his Hey Day - not a little 'grunge' , but a freaking SHIP LOAD. He took a Beatles hit and owned it the day he first covered it!

Thanks to John Lennon and Paul McCartney this song exists, thanks to Joe Cocker for taking it to another level.

This doesn't touch the Woodstock performance. Sure the sound quality might be better but the performance just isn't the same.

I don't know how everyone missed this but THE STAGE WAS DRESSED TO LOOK LIKE A JUKEBOX! Joe Cocker didn't sing, he threw his soul at the audience.

You're right, it is a church (Gospel) arrangement by Leon Russell. And yes you should check out Leon, who was his bandleader/musical director when this arrangement was put together with Mad Dogs and Englishmen.

This is actually a Beatles song. However, you need to do the Woodstock performance (Live video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIa5dnmhn9ace6c ) or even better, the Mad Dogs and Englishmen (MD&E), which is also a live version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGfWoZ94bMaWjsU . Same song, just great performances from when he was much younger and his voice even more powerful. The MD&E version has everybody that was anybody with him on the tour: On Vocals: Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge, Donna Washburn, Claudia Lennear, Denny Cordell, Daniel Moore, Pamela Polland, Matthew Moore, Nicole Barclay (of Fanny), Bobby Jones Leon Russell - lead guitar, piano, vocals, backing vocals (also the band leader/director) Don Preston - guitar, vocals, backing vocals Chris Stainton - organ, piano Carl Radle - bass guitar Jim Gordon, Jim Keltner, Chuck Blackwell - drums Chuck Blackwell, Sandy Konikoff, Bobby Torres - percussion Jim Horn, Bobby Keys - saxophone Jim Price - trumpet These were all very professional artists in their own right or professional studio musicians, many of whom were from the famous "The Wrecking Crew", who were on just about everything back then. You see, most groups didn't do their own playing on records, at least not all of it ... many parts, if not all, were done by studio musicians, and none were more often used than The Wrecking Crew, who came up with all the catching lead solos, bass lines horn sections, etc. Heck, even Glenn Campbell (1 of the best guitarists ever) was a member and, not only did a lot of the work for The Beach Boys, but even went on tour with them. SO, just remember, most of those catchy tunes from the 50's and 60's were created and made famous by a loose grouping of studio musicians.

Church-towel approved! :) But the original performance at Woodstock is better. Until I saw the original video, I thought the backup singers at Woodstock were female!

This is "Put on your Sunglasses and get your Stank Face on" kind of music! Ray Charles couldn't get the Head Rollin hard enough for this song! Those Backup Singers sound like they just came from a 72 Straight hour Evangelical Gig... They didn't take the Audience to Church, they dropped them straight off at the Pearly Gates! FANTASTIC Reaction, Britt! When Joe let out that Shriek, I KNEW he had you in the palms of his hands! WOW!

Saw him at Woodstock, funny thing his back up singers didn't make it because they were stuck in traffic. His band had to sing backup. Check out Sep 9 version of You Can Leave Your Hat On. THIS IS A BEATLES COVER

"Effortless" I've never heard someone describe a Cocker performance with that adjective. He normally leaves me exhausted just watching.

This is a Lennon/McCartney (Beatles) song from the Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band album. It was sung on that album by Ringo Starr. Joe Cocker was the master of covers. When he covered a song it was like you had never heard that song before. Check out The Letter (originally by The Boxtops for whom it was a hit) and he did it even better! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gp27ZnyNrM6tfck

My first exposure to Joe Cocker's wonderful rendition of this song (and, until now, the only version I can recall hearing) was the often replayed live Woodstock version. This one was still good, a slight bit slower than Woodstock, but not by a considerable amount. Basically, ole Joe took a relatively good Beatles pop song, gave it a slow, bluesy edge, and skyrocketed across the cosmos with it.
