Man, whoever suggested this song to you deserves a medal. This song (and entire album) was my kind of gateway off of metal and rock when I went to uni (it came out that year). Then I found that Hungary (my country) has a similar band called Brains - dnb with full on instruments. And seeing this stuff live is on an other level, as the instruments come more to the front (seen Pendulum once, as for the local band I go to every concert in my town almost religiously). Long story short, I'm happy that you liked this song! :)

There is an other experimental musician called Celldweller :) if you liked it you must check him out! He makes DNB mixed with electronic music and metal... This is my favourite quite similar what you've heared in Witchcraft. It's a digital metal ballad. I love it!!! Probably the best song from this genre. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJqXqWuGeJdopLs And that was the first song I've heared so far. I heared this song in an advertisement on M1. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqrJlJtmqdFkes0 De egyébként én is Magyarországról vagyok, én pl korábban ismertem a Pendulumot, de jó látni hogy itthon is van rajongója :)

The guitar Rob Swire (Vocalist) is using is a Ztar, which is essentially a MIDI keyboard in the shape of a guitar, there are buttons in place for all frets of the six strings, but there are actual strings at the pickup end, so you can strum. Pretty sure there is an in-built synthesizer in there as it's computer controlled essentially, but it should also be able to output MIDI as is. It's a pretty cool piece of kit.
@tmb8807
@tmb8807 3 жыл бұрын
Propane Nightmares might be up your street. Really dark track in terms of its composition, but in the same sort of genre as this. Not sure if anyone's mentioned it below but the instrument the singer plays is called a Z-tar - as you said, basically a midi controller in the shape of a guitar. Pendulum are notoriously surgical with their production - in fact I think Rob Swire considers himself a producer first, singer/songwriter second. They do it in such a way that each individual instrumental element occupies a specific frequency range, which is one of things that gives it that synthetic feel. Also the fact that the frequency ranges of the sub bass and the kick drum are kinda reversed compared to where a normal kick drum and bass guitar would sit relative to one another.

What makes Pendulum stands out is, that the Drum part is actually played by KJ Sawka on real drums. Other Drum&Bass acts are using MIDI and Sample packs (which isn't a bad thing, just different). Also KJ Sawka is a great drummer! Regarding the bass you mentioned: I assume that they used a real E-Bass for the midbass range and using a synth for the subbass. Like a really meaty sine bass like it's used in a lot of electronic stuff.
@dzonyyya
@dzonyyya 3 жыл бұрын
The weird bass sounds that you were referring to: It's an actual bass guitar with a sort of distortion/overdrive. However, they take that distorted signal and layer it on top of the clean bass signal. That's how you get that aggressive sound, and still have the low-end pulse of the bass itself.

I'm a huge metal head and it's definitely the primary overall genre of music I listen to, but Pendulum are easily my favourite band/artists of all time. The way they have evolved over the years is amazing, but they're one of the few groups I've heard where I love every single song on each of the (very different) albums. Their music has also gotten me through some really tough times in my life. Oh, and they're the last live act I saw when they played Sydney early in 2020 just before Covid really hit. Great reaction Chase, really glad you picked such an amazing song and that you're happy to push outside of what you normally listen to.

So you should check out Knife Party aswell, it´s a DJ-Duo, which are 2 guys from Pendulum, the singer and and the bassist. Bonfire, Internet Friends and Centipede. I saw both Pendulum and Knife Party at the Nova Rock festival years ago, it was a blast. And thank you so much for your reactions, always brighten up my days. Much love from germany!

Yes! We demand a pendulum playlist, they with bands like prodigy and pitchshifter all blurred the lines of musical genres and I am so here for it, and a lot of the times they would perform with actual instruments not just a laptop, Jim the guitarist for prodigy also played with pitchshifter and there drummer Jason (one of the best out there) now plays for bullet for my valentine

@@ChaseCarneson it’s the sound of my teens (as well as metal ) for sure, I was also confused by instruments with bands like this until I started touring and seeing there kit, playback racks, loops, sample trigger pads etc I think my favourite was the hot hand (see pinn panelle) a ring that means you could distort and manipulate a bass like a dubstep theremin (spelling?)

What I love and find very impressive about Pendulum is that they are able to realize electronic music with real life instruments. Seeing one of their live sets is high on my bucket list!

Okay, loved this one from the first note, Chase. Thanks for introducing them to me as well as thanks to whoever requested it as I have another new band to search and listen too. Its not my normal lsiten but it is cool. Your reaction was as awesome as always and it is because of you that I started being more of an active listener. Your week is off to an awesome start. Well, back to work, but have a damn good day man!

Nice one Chase, so glad you're dipping outside of your comfort zone with Pendulum. I saw their full band experience Live at the Brixton Academy here in London back like 10 years+ ago. It was recorded for DVD, so go and check out if you can find it, watch it and enjoy it!

FUN FACT: The two main members of Pendulum (Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen) have an even more popular alias that goes by the name "Knife Party." They made Knife Party specifically to distance themselves from Pendulum for a bit (about 5 years until they did live shows and 10 years until they released their next track). just listen to Bonfire by Knife Party and you might recognize it if you have watched Breaking Bad.

DAMMIT WHY AM I SO HAPPY I totally forgot about Pendulum. I don't like everything, since I am not really a drum and bass fan, but I remember how I liked multiple songs from them. I think I loved almost every song from this cd, and I LOVED this song, together with both parts of The Island. See you guys later, gonna go down Nostalgia Lane now. Thanks Chase.
