Man, whoever suggested this song to you deserves a medal. This song (and entire album) was my kind of gateway off of metal and rock when I went to uni (it came out that year). Then I found that Hungary (my country) has a similar band called Brains - dnb with full on instruments. And seeing this stuff live is on an other level, as the instruments come more to the front (seen Pendulum once, as for the local band I go to every concert in my town almost religiously). Long story short, I'm happy that you liked this song! :)

The guitar Rob Swire (Vocalist) is using is a Ztar, which is essentially a MIDI keyboard in the shape of a guitar, there are buttons in place for all frets of the six strings, but there are actual strings at the pickup end, so you can strum. Pretty sure there is an in-built synthesizer in there as it's computer controlled essentially, but it should also be able to output MIDI as is. It's a pretty cool piece of kit.
@tmb88073 жыл бұрын
Propane Nightmares might be up your street. Really dark track in terms of its composition, but in the same sort of genre as this. Not sure if anyone's mentioned it below but the instrument the singer plays is called a Z-tar - as you said, basically a midi controller in the shape of a guitar. Pendulum are notoriously surgical with their production - in fact I think Rob Swire considers himself a producer first, singer/songwriter second. They do it in such a way that each individual instrumental element occupies a specific frequency range, which is one of things that gives it that synthetic feel. Also the fact that the frequency ranges of the sub bass and the kick drum are kinda reversed compared to where a normal kick drum and bass guitar would sit relative to one another.

What makes Pendulum stands out is, that the Drum part is actually played by KJ Sawka on real drums. Other Drum&Bass acts are using MIDI and Sample packs (which isn't a bad thing, just different). Also KJ Sawka is a great drummer! Regarding the bass you mentioned: I assume that they used a real E-Bass for the midbass range and using a synth for the subbass. Like a really meaty sine bass like it's used in a lot of electronic stuff.
@dzonyyya3 жыл бұрын
The weird bass sounds that you were referring to: It's an actual bass guitar with a sort of distortion/overdrive. However, they take that distorted signal and layer it on top of the clean bass signal. That's how you get that aggressive sound, and still have the low-end pulse of the bass itself.

FUN FACT: The two main members of Pendulum (Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen) have an even more popular alias that goes by the name "Knife Party." They made Knife Party specifically to distance themselves from Pendulum for a bit (about 5 years until they did live shows and 10 years until they released their next track). just listen to Bonfire by Knife Party and you might recognize it if you have watched Breaking Bad.

Pendulum did an amazing track with Steven Wilson about 11 years ago, called "The Fountain". I strongly recommend you check it out. ;)

I decided from today to keep suggesting one performance until Chase reacts to it. Alter Bridge - Words Darker Than Their Wings - Live at the Royal Albert Hall.

Hell yeah Pendulum! I listened to one of their albums A LOT in the mid 00s. Definitely on the rockier side of D&B and I love it. May I recommend Justice next. Especially their song Genesis

Mick Gordon. Just do it. Heaviest riffs and breakdowns in metal history. And its for a GAME.

DAMMIT WHY AM I SO HAPPY I totally forgot about Pendulum. I don't like everything, since I am not really a drum and bass fan, but I remember how I liked multiple songs from them. I think I loved almost every song from this cd, and I LOVED this song, together with both parts of The Island. See you guys later, gonna go down Nostalgia Lane now. Thanks Chase.

Over a decade too late :) One of sickest gig what i was whitness. 2010 Provinssi Rock Finland. They rock so hard that electricics turned off after they play first song intro. Oh heck what a show after they got powers back!
