@@hecticreaction You aren't alone. Every new reviewer to Pentatonix is surprised by Mitch. You didn't even hear how high he can actually go. Often in their videos his is the high voice, not Kirstie. His low range is amazing though too. He's a generational talent.

Kevin Olusola, the beatboxer does come up with all those sounds...but obviously somewhat enhanced in the studio.Kevin uses a stamp pad nowadays, since stomping is hard on the knees. There is a live version ( actually several because the group tours a lot) and it sounds exactly the same. In fact they pride themselves on being able to reproduce any of their official videos onstage or live. If you want to check out more Pentatonix, try: Sound of Silence, Daft Punk medley, 90's Dance Medley, Can't Hold Us, Shallow, Say Something...well... anything you want from their 200+ discography.

So many listeners of this cover fail to realize that Kevin is beatboxing as well as using body percussion. He is making drum sounds with his mouth; that’s what beatboxing is all about. Unlike a lot of their other covers, there wasn’t much camera time time spent watching Kevin’s face, and a lot of reactors and viewers think that the sounds are all coming from his hands and feet. Watch the live versions and you’ll see and hear the familiar Kevin mouth drum sounds.

For the percussion, he is beatboxing, as well as clapping, stomping, chest slaps (obviously done in recording studio to get clear samples and add reverb, compression, etc), but it sounds equally impressive live.

Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZbin, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZbin videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZbin), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZbin, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

As for Pentatonix not needing any instruments watch their Daft Punk Medley and their cover of "The Dance of the Sugar-plum Fairies." And they do occasionally have instruments when Kevin Olusola (the beat-boxer) also plays his cello and for that, you might watch their cover of "Radioactive" with Lindsey Sterling.

The sounds you hear were made in the studio recording of the song. The motions in the video arrangement are the beatboxing equivalent of lip-syncing to produce a video display. Most people aren't aware that they do not sing the cut used when they film the video portion. That is cut together with the audio from the studio. Now, just for clarity, at their concerts and live performances Kevin does slap his body and stomp his feet to make those exact sounds. So long story probably longer than I needed to make it, he is making those sounds himself.

Just to repeat a few other commenters, that is Mitch's real voice, he has a 6 octave range which is almost unheard of. Kevin does make all the sounds himself, he is extremely talented. Avi (Ah-vee) the bass singer in this and then Matt his replacement 2017 (only change in people in 11 years it was a friendly breakup, among other things, Avi's mom got sick, and trying to fly back and forth while touring was just too exhausting) do help out with some sounds. Actually it is my understanding that Kevin invented the slap pad, and stomp pad that he uses, but I could be wrong on that. Now as you have found out their record company is stupid when it comes to copyrite issues. But most reactors have found that if you will make the video more transparent, and place some text over it (your name, Pentatonix, covered with text for copyrite, just anything, or a logo several reactors have a new filter that looks like water running down the screen that seems to work well) and then pause every now and then to talk, it will help to keep from getting blocked. I enjoyed the reaction, and look forward to seeing your reactions to PTX in the future. Really any song they do you will like.I had to look at what other reactions you've done so I could recommend something. They've got Daft Punk Medley (won a Grammy for it, even though it was done on about a $400 budget), their original Love Again, Problem, and The Ceiling can't hold us. That should get yo started then you can work your way into other genre's.

I guess you may be guessing at this point that there is a difference between knowing about Pentatonix, and KNOWING about Pentatonix, lol. They have deep and eclectic catalog of covers and originals in several genres, and they are also known for Christmas music. With one change in personnel (when Avi left to be replaced by Matt about in the middle of their career), they have been a band for about eleven years, and though they occasionally use instruments when it’s appropriate, they are usually acapella with vocals, beatboxing, and body percussion (as in this one). Great reaction! Pentatonix don't do covers they do upgrades! I think your next ones should be , Daft Punk medely, Amazing Grace my chains are gone. There are many more. Up until 2016 Avi Kaplan was there base. Then Matt stepped into his shoes. I have heard it said Avi was dark chocolate fudge where Matt is warm carmel. No comparing them, both are soooooo good. Just different. Enjoy all there music.

Leonard Cohen thought this was the best version of his song and over 700 million views doesn't lie.

Not sure why this myth keeps being repeated in the comments, but here's the facts, as recounted by Scott Hoying. He sent a recording to Cohen of PTX singing the song with Christmas-based lyrics, very shortly before Cohen's death. Cohen replied that he'd rather that PTX use his original, poetic lyrics, which they did in a re-recorded version (this one), and Scott says that it's a good thing they did, because this version became so popular. Given how close to death Cohen was, it's not confirmed whether he ever heard the final version, and there is nothing on record to suggest he thought it was "the best". He *is* on record as saying that k.d. lang's rendition was so good that they could retire everybody else's. So, certainly not saying that Cohen didn't like it, but saying he thought it was the best is just wishful thinking by some fans, that keeps getting repeated in youtube comments. The Hoying interview is in the Dallas Morning News, Feb. 2, 2021.

Interesting that in your intro you said you only knew them from Pitch Perfect 2, since that was made several years after they hit the music scene. They originally formed to compete on the a cappella TV show The Sing-Off, and won their season in 2011. But the Trio of Scott (tall blonde guy), Mitch (high voice, round hat) and Kirstie (female, name rhymes with thirsty) all went to high school together and have known each other since they were kids (8 for Mitch and Kirstie, 10 for Mitch and Scott). They added Avi (bass) and Kevin (beatboxer) because the TV show required they have at least 5 members in the group. The official video of Hallelujah is by far their most popular video (over 700 Million views), but they have a number of videos on KZbin reaching multiple 10s (or 100s) of millions of views. They have toured worldwide, play to sold out auditoriums and arenas, and have multiple gold and platinum selling albums. While all of the Official Videos are performed using the studio track of the song, with them lip-synching, there are lots of videos on KZbin of them performing various songs live, so you can get a good idea of what they sound like with minimal/no processing on their sound. There's a live version of this song performed for their 2016 Christmas TV special: kzbin.info/www/bejne/npKpeaWcost7mMU Recommendations: Daft Punk, Bohemian Rhapsody, Sound of Silence, The Prayer, Come Along

Thank you for the info Badger! Awesome that they have known each other that long, I’m sure it helps their chemistry a lot! I was aware of them outside of the movie due to their popularity, but I don’t recall hearing any of their music or covers outside of what they did in the movie (which in no way compares to the level of this cover). I will be checking out your suggestions for sure! See you on the next one.

Hold on to your seat, sir... you're in for quite a journey! Just a little heads up... its PENTATONIX (no The in front of it, Pentaholics will give you 💩 about it, lovingly, but still😉). They are amazing, but my suggestion would be if you're going to do their Covers, listen and familiarize yourself with the original before the Cover. Just some friendly advice. I'll be here for your journey, normally don't comment, but figured this isn't something you'll hear.

😂 Alapacas - I’ve known this song (not the Pentatonix version) for a long time and I know people have many different interpretations for it. If you research it there were actually a ton of verses written for it. Some people say it’s love and sex, some people think religious, etc. It definitely has a lot of biblical references which cannot be denied. Thank you for watching!
