I think this is Bo's best song. He's using hyperbole, like the satanic imagery and the nazi salute, to associate how evil and corrupt the entertainment industry is. The incessant need to prey on young kids and teens to sell false idols, idealization, and of course false sense of self. It's not just the music industry but the entertainment industry as a whole. Bo's brilliant way to bring attention to and make you feel uncomfortable about it all is quite incredible.

The "Salute", is, i believe a reference to what happens when a populous jut blindly follows a charismatic individual, repeating the same 💩 over and over again.
@unclefoot Жыл бұрын
Awesome reaction as always! I love seeing people react to the ‘mic bl****b’ and the ‘salute’. In his previous special there’s a part where he gets the crowd to repeat “hey, Ho” a couple times and says: “that’s how Hitler rose to power”. Just a fun little callback attached to that theme of nefarious people using repetition to sway people’s emotions. Probably not an intentional callback, but for Bo, it tracks. As for the iTunes reference, after Napster and Limewire took off, album sales plummeted. When the iPod became a thing, Apple’s music player, iTunes took off with it and gave everyone what they wanted…record labels got some of their revenue stream back, and everybody else got a virus free way to easily get whatever music they wanted. From 2001-2011 there was some competition to itunes but they were far and away the biggest music distributor right up until Spotify showed up and turned streaming into a thing. Loving the reactions, keep ‘em comin! Cheers
@Kerrigore2 Жыл бұрын
Back in the day when this was written/recorded, before Spotify etc. really took off, the iTunes Music Store was the biggest point of sale for music in the world, driven in part by the massive success of the iPod (this was pre-iPhone). People would still buy & download their music instead of just streaming it, but rather than buying CD's and then ripping them to the computer, they'd just buy them as digital downloads. It was somewhat revolutionary because you could buy individual songs rather than whole albums, and every song cost the same originally (99 cents), although eventually Apple gave in to pressure and allowed studios to price them between 79 cents and $1.29. This was beck when studios were still used to selling albums by having 1-2 really popular songs on the album that people would buy the whole album to get, so at first they were very resistant. It also gave Apple unprecedented influence over the whole music industry for a time.

Usher and his team also definitely did whatever they could to get the music out to as many desperate teens as they could. And he DEFINITELY has the same type of lyrics Bo is referencing in this song. A lot of lovey-dovey, sexual stuff on repeat. I've listened to a lot of Usher, and i enjoy it. But he definitely fits in with 1D and JB in this context.

1) Justin used to be called the White Usher, beacuse of how much he was of a Mentor to Justin. so yes Usher is very much Suited for this Catorgory. 1.b) now old-school Usher which i assume where you are coming from is nothing like the modern love song usher, and Side note Justin now apprently "despises" Usher for apprently the way he was Groomed to be as he was "Discovered". ( mind this is all Justin's Words and i have no opinion on it, i don't like Old justin and Dont like new Usher) (EDIT:) 2) Bo did this Song and routine one night and Didn't know Justin Had just Snuck in with Selena Gomez to watch the show, but we havn't heard anything from Justin about it so i assume he took it in good Jest. When this was written/performed, the biggest money maker at that time in the music industry would have been sales of songs on iTunes. This was before Spotify and other music streaming services had hit the market, so to say “they can’t use iTunes” was a condemnation of people who couldn’t spend money on the product. Just another great way Bo uses this song to roast the music industry lol

“Usher, Justin Bieber, and 1 Direction - one of those things does not belong.” Yeah, I think Mr. Burnham (…and I have no idea why I just called him that) got that part a little off. It’s funny how when someone you usually always agree with says something that doesn’t mesh with your perspective it can send you on a mini identity crisis though. I’m exaggerating, obviously, but I must say that the first time I saw this bit while watching the special I had to pause it for a solid 5 minutes to sit and reflect on the possibility that Usher was actually just another hollow pop artist and that I’d simply been blind to it this whole time. Of course, my conclusion both then and now has been that Usher is every bit the artist I thought he was, and that My Way is one of the best R&B albums of my lifetime (possibly all-time? I don’t know nearly enough about pre-‘my lifetime’ a.k.a. pre-1989 R&B to say). Tangential Thought: Now that I think about it, I can only come up with 2 other R&B albums that I would for sure put above My Way (well, 3 if you want to count Raphael Saadiq’s The Way I See It, but that’s probably more so considered a neo-soul album) - Erykah Badu’s album, the title of which I can’t remember right now (you know, the one with On & On and Apple Tree), and D’Angelo’s album…the title of which also eludes me at the moment 😅
