There's a live version of this from 1964 in which the guys are wearing tuxedos . . . and Bobby REALLY wails on the high part during that call and response portion near the end. The version you watched is really good. The other version is one for the ages. Simply incredible.

This is one of the top 20 love songs of all time, BrittReacts. Rarely do tenor and baritone vocals mesh this perfectly. Finally this is one of the finest examples of "Blue Eyed Soul" and backed by music producer, Phil Spector's trade mark Wall of Sound. FTR, I am a retired professional music critic with 45 + years experience.

Hatfield and Medley had contrasting vocal ranges, which helped them create a distinctive sound as a duet. They each had the vocal talent to perform as soloists. Medley sang the low parts with his bass-baritone voice, with Hatfield taking the higher-register vocals with his tenor. Hatfield reached the register of a countertenor.

This song is certifiably the most played song on the radio and TV in the 20th CENTURY! The entire CENTURY! Just imagine hearing this song on the radio (which we played ALL the time, by the way) several times a day for several years!!! This is the quality of music we heard on the TV and radio for decades! I swear, we were the luckiest people in the world. ( Ha ha, "the luckiest people . . . in the world." Look that up, Britt, then listen to the song that you find and show us your reaction. Trust me . . . you'll LOVE it!) ❤❤❤❤

That motif that you mention at 3:43 is certainly familiar. It's the most common chord progression in rock history (I IV V for any musicians out there). It's 'Summer Loving', 'Hang On Sloopy', 'Louie Louie', 'Twist and Shout', 'La Bamba', 'Wild Thing' etc etc...

Lots of people have noticed that similarity Britt. It is a very common bass progression. Also, there is another video of this song with a large number of back-up singers. One of them is a young lady trying to make a name for herself in music and starting as a back-up singer in studio and on stage. Her name is Cherilyn Sarkasian. You would know her better today as Cher!! Everybody started somewhere huh?!

Bill Medley, the baritone (lower voice) is still with us and will turn 83 in the fall. Sadly, Bobby Hatfield, the tenor, passed about 20 years ago. I saw them live a couple of times in the 1980s. They were magnificent, and a lot of singers and bands from the 1950s and 60s were doing "Oldies" tours in the '80s. Often several would appear on a single bill just as they did back in those earlier decades. The Brothers always sounded Righteous!

Ah, I knew you'd love this one! This song was featured in Top Gun (the original), where Tom Cruise sings it to pick up Kelly McGillis' character. And yes, that basic doo-wop beat was very popular in music at the time, and Grease definitely used it for Summer Lovin' (the song you were thinking of, I'm guessing).

This Phil Spector song (Ronettes, Darlene Love, the Crystals etc.) was the most played single on radio stations in the entire 1960's: According to BMI music publishing, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" was played on American radio and television more times than any other song in the 20th century. It got over 8 million plays from the time it was released until 2000. Note that this includes all versions of the song, not just The Righteous Brothers'.

The quintessential Righteous Brothers song. I think the word you're looking for is "restrained". It feels like he's holding back, and then when he belts out that first "Baby", it goes to a whole different energy. That common chord progression reminds me of a great video about how all pop songs use the same 4 chords. Three Aussie guys roll through like 50 songs, and it's amazing how they all use the same chords.

Bill has a baritone voice and Bobby is a counter-tenor with an outrageous 5 octave range. He could freely hit the high C's with ease. You must check out Bobby's excellent, often copied but never ever duplicated, solo rendition of "Unchained Melody". Here's where Bobby shows you his range....it's not falsetto. ( react to the live video from The Andy Williams Show (1965. best quality). You must watch from the beginning where Andy Williams ( one of the best ballad singers of all times) introduces the Righteous Bros. and then interacts with them before Bobby sings and then watch the 3 of them sing together after Bobby's solo. These guys are young here, in their early 20's. Bobby had a cold and wasn't feeling his best. He was nervous because The Andy Williams Show ( a 1 hour variety show that came on once a week for several years) had a huge tv audience of well over 1 million per each show. And Bobbg's mother was in the audience....her first time seeing him perform live. ( She is the lady to the left in the blue dress) Unchanged Melody is the most coveted song ever with over 670 covers. It was a big hit in 1965 and then it got a second life when used in the movie Ghost, (the pottery scene and towards the end of the movie). It hit the top of the charts again and ensured that this is the quintessential love song. It was a song from a little known prison movie called "Unchained" from the1950's.and was recorded by a couple of people before Bobby. Al Hibblers version had been the most popular until Bobby Hatfield knocked it out of the park! Do yourself a favor after you watch the video from the Andy Williams show, and go back and listen to the record version. This is the version in the movie Ghost and it's fabulous. Bobby wanted to play around with it and show more of his vocal range on the Andy Williams show.. Check out Bobby's solo of "Summertime" ( video) Bill's (almost solo) "I Just Want to Make Love to You." Bill also had a big hit song duet with Jennifer Warnes, "I Had The Time of My Life" from the movie Dirty Dancing...it's The song from the final dance scene with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. Righteous Bros.: "You'll Never Walk Alone" "Soul and Inspiration" "Rock and Roll Heaven" Check out Andy Williams: "Love is a Many Splendor Thing" "Moon River" "Love Story"
