There was the briefest of moments when the Iron Curtain came down, when the Berlin Wall came down, a moment where it felt like all the people of the world were finally on the the same path. I was in my mid-twenties and naive I guess, but for a few months, the world really felt good. This song always reminds me of that time and captures that feeling perfectly.

I know, even in New Zealand we felt it. It was a time of so much change - so much promise. Even the very air seemed full of excitement and possibility. We saw what the world could be; should be. We watched the map of Europe be redrawn again and again, countries splitting apart and reforming in new and fascinating ways, as the Wind Of Change swept across Eastern Europe leaving a different world behind. If you didn't live through that period you can never really understood how wonderful, how powerful, how hopeful, and promising, a time it was. And part of me feels sorry for those who didn't experience it. Sometimes I wonder, what happened? Where did all that promise go? Then I realize what happened... People. But this song, Wind Of Change, takes you back to that time. It's beautifully nostalgic, and painfully wistful. And I hope, one day, all that promise will finally be realized.

"Wind of Change" is a song by West German rock band Scorpions, the text was written to explain the fall of communism and the political change in Europe at the end of the 80s. Klaus Meine the singer of the band was inspirated when the Scorpions performed on Moscow Music Peace Festival, 13th August 1989 in Lenin Stadium. When he was sitting in Gorky Park he got the idea for this song.

It was a time of so much change, so much promise, and this song reflected that perfectly. I'm from New Zealand 🇳🇿, and even here we could feel the Wind Of Change. It felt like it was blowing through the entire world, heralding a change for the better. We saw what the world could be. Should be. Was going to be. It was an exciting, awe-inspiring, a little frightening, time to be alive. The very air was alive with possibility. Nothing since has held the same feeling. The same promise. We watched as the Map Of Europe was redrawn. Only to be redrawn again, and again, as countries fractured and split apart, only to reform in new and fascinating ways. We watched as the number of countries increased. We saw the Wind Of Change sweep across Eastern Europe and leave a changed world in it's wake. Sometimes I wonder what happened. Where all that energy, all that promise went.

@@brittreacts Even though the original is great -- and it is what people are used to -- this version has aspects that the original doesn't and which, for me, make this version superior in ways. I think generally when people request the original they are doing so with all the memories and associations that the original carries in their lives, which makes doing so understandable...but fear not you heard a great version here with instrumentation and a live setting you won't get in the original.

A beautiful & timely piece the Scorpions brought to us in a time of uncertainty. I believe just as relevant today in fact. Klaus' voice is wonderful & so glad you enjoyed this. (Just a simple request, perhaps you could add more commentary at the end of your reactions/reviews...especially a sing as powerful as this. The layers here are fantastic, the lyrical impact had a global reach. Also, pull up the lyrics...they really could bring so much meaning to music like this. ) Appreciate your channel, keep bringing the good stuff!

I was an American kid living in Germany in the 70s and witnessed myself the vile evil of what that wall represented. When it went down when I was grown and had 3 kids and a wife, it was confusing to my family why I cried. It was for realized dreams that could finally be realized and for the lives lost trying to escape it before it came down. We has friends that had made it and lost sons during their attempt. You really should watch the original music video. It shows a montage of events that occurred during that time and gives you the context for the song. The Berlin Wall fell at the end of 1989 and East and West Germany reunited in 1990 after being separated since 1949. The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, the same year that "Wind of Change" was released.

The more you hear harder rock/metal, you start to hear a lot of classical influences. Chord changes, vocals and solo’s all draw from composers like Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, along with operatics in a bunch of the vocals. A ridiculous amount of metal vocalists have formal/opera training in their backgrounds. And there are quite a few that have 5+ octave ranges. Many other metal bands have done shows with a full orchestra and choir, even Metallica. RJ Dio and Disturbed would be be good to explore this avenue of classically inspired metal vocals.

The Scorpions, a German band was expressing feelings about the fall of the Berlin wall after Ronald Reagan put pressure on Gorbachev to "Tear down this wall" in his famous speech. The wall came down shortly after Reagan left office. I was very young when the wall was put up in 1961 so it was something that seemed like it was always there. The idea that the wall would come down and Germany would reunify was almost beyond belief, so it was a very emotional thing for Germans. Some of the strongest believers of liberty are former East Germans.

This must have been from some 25 years anniversary celebration of the unification of Germany. „wind of change“ came out upon the fall of the Soviet Union and became the theme song of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the re-unification of Germany. I guess they re-inacted the song with an orchestra during this kind of celebration event.

The "Wind of Change" speech was a speech by British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in South Africa in 1960. "The wind of change is blowing through this continent. Whether we like it or not, this growth of national consciousness is a political fact." Although..... the "Wind of change" in this song, was more to do with the retreat of the Soviet Union from Eastern Europe and the fall of the Berlin Wall. I'm not sure I liked this version as much as the original though. I need to listen to original again. OK. I listened to original again. I Definitely prefer it.

Wow, you got me on this one. I haven't seen this performance by the Scorpions before. I think I actually prefer the original live but enjoyed your thoughts on it.

Yeah, you need to hear the original Scorpions video to really get a feel for the song. It was just after the wall fell. Lot of history here. The video you show here is pretty...but it's not at all the same as the actual song.

The "Grand event" you perceive and this song is for, is, believe it or not, the END of the COLD WAR.... And the hope for the "WORLD PEACE" everybody was hoping when the Berlin Wall was torn down by the Gorvachev's Soviet Union... in fact, one of these Concerts some years ago was to celebrate Gorvachevs 80th birthday.... he appeared in one of the concert videos...
