The song was actually written for a movie in 1955 titled 'Unchained' & is sung by a convict who is missing his sweetheart. Many artists have covered the song but it was Bobby Hatfield's -(of the Righteous Brothers) solo version in 1965 that raised the song to a masterpiece. Incidently, for you young'uns, 1965 may sound like a looooong time ago but for those of us who were there, it was yesterday.😁

Several "singers" have covered this song since then. But Bobby's live performance in 1965 is untouchable. Yes, 1965, before auto tune or any other computer gizmos to enhance voice/tone/pitch quality. This is just raw talent. Bobby's 3-octave range is amazing and so effortless. Bobby owns this! (RIP)

And, yeah, most people have the same reaction to this song and fabulous performance, live on the Andy Williams variety show. It's been said he had up to 5 octaves he could sing, and in this melody he used upwards to 24 different notes..naturally..don't even see ANY facial strain to do those notes. SUPERIOR MASTERPIECE!! Love this song..and him. Sadly we lost him in 2003..R.I.P. Bobby.

You couldn't tell, but Bobby was very nervous as his mother was in the audience that night and this was a live performance. He knew that he nailed it as evidenced by the lip bite at the end. The notes he hit in the end couldn't be reached by most male singers. Many, many babies were born 9 months after this performance. This is what we called, "Baby making music."
