Just a heads up! This was recorded almost 1 year ago when I (Ron) was still very much a noob (still am) when it comes to anime. Sharing this for anyone who didn't know we reacted to this! Even a year later, I still think this is the "realist" anime we have seen, and because of that it holds a special place in my heart. Combine that with the fact that both Michelle and I have always been obsessed with Vikings, and it was a match made in heaven. You can watch our reaction to both seasons now on our Patreon. Vinland IS Canada, and the show is based on real Viking writings such as « Vinland sagas », hence the name of the anime. Vikings arrived in North America 471 years before Christopher Columbus

For the Vikings, if you died in battle you would go to "Valhalla" or "Sessrúmnir" and if you were just a regular person like a villager you would go to "Hel" which was ruled by the Goddess also named "Hel" (she makes a appearance in the Thor movies). The Norse "Hel" is not to be confused with the Christian version of "Hell" spelled slightly differently. "Hel" wasn't a place for evildoers and sinners, but was a place where the dead went much like the Greek underworld "Hades" ruled by the God also named "Hades". The text you read where "Hel" isn't a pleasant place is misleading, it's described in the poems as being quite pleasant and many would of been happy to be there to see their deceased ancestors. That being, said certain places in "Hel" were nicer than others, for example you didn't want to end up in "Náströnd" which is a place within "Hel" for murderers, adulterers and oath-breakers, essentially this would be the Norse version of the modern interpretation of "Hell". In fact, the origin of the English word "Hell" comes from the Norse and Old English word "Hel" which just meant afterlife or underworld. It's theorized the word "Hell" was actually adopted into Germanic speaking Christianity as a way to try and convert Germanic Pagans into Christianity by warping their view of "Hel" as being a horrible place and that they'd be better off in the Christian "Heaven" instead. Before adopting the word "Hell" the Christians would of used the latin word "Gehenna" instead.

Fun fact: Iceland has a database of every person that’s lived in Iceland since the first settler’s, including Hrafna-Flóki Vilgerðarson, who floki is based off in the show. And I’m related to him by blood. And yes I’m named after Odin

Yes vinland is America (North America continent). Vikings were the first foreigners to step on american soil, but they were not able to colonize it.
