Yu Yu Hakusho is certified classic, it inspired, along with Saint Seiya, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, JoJo and Hokuto no Ken, basically all the super powers in anime. The main characters of those inspired almost every type of MC in every other anime. The direct legacy of this anime is seen in Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, Full Metal Alchemist and even HxH.

Same mangaka as Hunter X Hunter, basically the author/lead artist...etc. Sadly he has had a lot of health issues for over a decade. Interesting thing, his wife is the mangaka for Sailor Moon. Both are very accomplished and talented writers/artists. Both of their works have been very influential on other anime/manga for decades.

Yes, YuYu hakusho and Hunter x Hunter are written by the same author (Yoshihiro Togashi). The manga ran from 1990-1994, while the anime aired from 1992-1994. Togashi wrote Hunter x Hunter 4 years later in 1998. YuYu hakusho is one of the goats of anime and has inspired many anime such as bleach and JJK. You have definitely seen Yusuke and the main cast many times since they are very iconic and popular. Also, when are you going to post part 2 of the detective conan op reactions?

Yu Yu Hakusho is a great anime, i'm sure you'd like it because it has TRAINING! 😂 Well the characters here are iconic it was one of THE shonen anime of the 90s, so yes there are lots of cosplays of them. It's one of my favorite old school anime, hopefully you'll react to it some day, maybe make a tournament for 90s anime? Since you said you wanted an old school one to watch. I watched it dub too and compared the dub and sub of episode 1 to see which is better and personally I thought the dub was better. Only for episode 1 specifically because Kuwabara's lines hit so much harder for me in dub. The funeral scene is just so much better in dub for me.

I like that YYH and HxH did that, just had one opening across the show. I think it really works for those shows as the stories progress, to start the episode with something comforting and familiar as the story that follows it gets stranger and darker as it goes along.

Yu Yu Hakusho is such a classic! Iconic dub too. Love it! Death Parade's opening comes to mind for an opening that is misleading towards the anime. The blue haired girl is named Botan and that isn't a giant spoon. It is a oar as she is a Grim Reaper/Shinigami who's job is to ferry/guide souls to the spirit world. It is likely a reference to the ferryman Charon of the River Styx or a similar Japanese Buddhist mythology River Sanzu(I don't think the 'ferryman' uses a boat/oars in this though).

It's the same Manga Author as HunterXHunter. In the 90s it was the #2 most popular Battle shonen after Dragonball, but features a much tighter plot. Its one of the few 90s shows I can 100% recommend in the age of streaming with 0 reservations or caveats, when it was airing on Toonami in the early 200's the einterest level it had frequently exceeded that of Dragonball. 1:30 he's been in a bunch of your thumbnails and "anime tournament images. He's pretty famous especially for 90's/early 2000's watchers. He's also been in a couple of the compilations you reacted to. As others said The English Version of the Yu Yu Hakasho opening is insanely good and the English version of the anime itself is one of the best Dubs ever made

I highly recommend that you react to Yu Yu Hakusho, it's really good. A lot of people (myself included) would also recommend watching it in English Dub, because imo you'll enjoy the humor way more that way. We need more Dub reactions and Yu Yu Hakusho is an anime that I've heard most people agree that they prefer watching it that way.

The show/manga has aged like a fine wine. Art and animation are still solid. Characters and story have the same weight of emotions. Seriously, the first three or so episodes really hit you hard. Togashi really is a great mangaka.

One of the very few shows from the 90s I would recommend to someone in the age of streaming with 0 reservations as it basically doesn't suffer from the TV broadcast pacing issues at all. Worst you can say is it starts a bit slow but that would also be true of any remake woth your time

yes Yu Yu Hakusho was written by the same author as Hunter x Hunter. It's the manga that the author wrote first before HxH and it is my personal favorite between the 2 of them (the HxH anime actually has some YYH easter eggs here and there). The anime aired 1992-1994 (manga went for 1990-1994) and Netflix actually made a live action series of the first 25 episodes worth not too long ago. It's also one of the few anime that actually has a good english dub. Would love to see reactions to it if you ever decided to try watching it!

Yu Yu Hakusho is amazing and was super popular in the late 90s. It got a really good english dub and aired in the states, would not surprise me if it was also in the UK. The second one you heard is the Eng version of the first and as you heard, its just as amazing! The vibe is so good, a classic I still go back and listen to on repeat even now.

funny how Luke sees a pacifier and says "he has a hole in his head" or "he has a cork". That character is Enma Jr., the son of Enma. Enma is the god of underworld who judges humans after they die. Enma Jr. is basically a baby in terms of age with respect to gods, thus he has a pacifier.

Just rewatched it recently and the nostalgia still hit me in the face. One of if not the only dub that actually elevates the character writing (at times), and this is coming from a sub purist. It's not the best anime, but it's still one of my absolute favorites (number 1 favorite squad out of every show I've seen too). It'll make you cry laugh and be really pissed, it's great.

A cross between HxH and FMA is actually pretty accurate. I can see that working lol. And it’s to this day one of my favorite anime. I’ve watched it so many times. You HAVE TO watch it dubbed if you ever watch it. I’m a sub person 99% of the time, but YYH has to be dubbed. And she actually IS one of the sweetest girls. Though some times she falls into an anime trope lol

And to answer your question to what anime has a completely different tone to the opening, I think the best example is Death Parade.

I'm so happy you reacted to this. Yu Yu Hakusho is one of the first anime that got me into anime. Back in the early 2000's, I watched the dub on Adult Swim when I was in my early 20's so I get a lot of nostalgia from this. Other than the first OP song, I hadn't seen the subbed endings so those were great to see. There are a few dubbed openings for Detective Conan (Case Closed) as well. I know there's one for the first series of Fruits Basket as well. You've only reacted to the second series of Fruits Basket that isn't very old. The first series was a comedy and the manga was still ongoing when it was being made so it had a original ending. That was pretty typical of 90's and early 2000's anime back then. Yes Yu Yu Hakusho has the same author as Hunter X Hunter. YYH came out first though. I hope you end up watching Yu Yu Hakusho so that someday you can look back at what you said about the girl and laugh like I did. Can't think of a opening but the ending to Zetsuen no Tempest is completely different from the tone of the show. The openings to Zetsuen no Tempest fits the tone though. That's the only spoiler you're getting from me because you were bad mouthing one of the sweetest characters in anime. What she has to put up with she's a damn saint. Yu Yu Hakusho is one of the greatest anime of all time. The English Dub is one of the few I would recommend over the JP, mostly because both are just as good, with only one line being arguably better in JP than ENG, but the English dub works better for English audiences in my opinion.

I just watched Yu Yu Hakusho for the first time 4 years ago (it never aired in my country or was available on video tape back then) and I absolutely adore it. Ofc there are some stereotypical things in this show but that’s to be expected for a show that’s so old. Despite this it also tackles unique topics that you wouldn’t have expected at all and the characters are all delightful.

First time hearing the opening and ending in the English dub. I watched the series in Spanish (Latin America) which have the original japanese opening and ending. But gosh, these songs are great. Much love for the ending "Sayonara Bye Bye" and "Smile Bomb"

YYH has been my #1 anime since it first aired back on Toonami way back. Has easily one of the best dubs of any anime to date with a ton of now recognizable voice actors. Fully worth a watch even if it's over 100 eps

The songs were dubbed because that was just a thing with alot of anime from the 80s and 90s. Sometimes I wish they did that with newer anime

Yu Yu Hakusho is definitely the best, it's one of my top favorites! Netflix made a live-action adaptation of it pretty recently but it wasn't great, it pretty much felt like a speed run of the original series, they cut out a lot of what I think was important character building content and it just didn't make you feel much for the characters like the anime does. What they pretty much did was to cram all of the cool fights in a few episodes instead of focusing on the actual story. If you watch the anime in the future I would recommend the English dub version, they did a really good job on it. You should also check out the Wolf's Rain opening, ending, and OST's I think you'd really enjoy them.
