Also don't miss out the live version at Legend 1997, it's even more shocking with the visual impact as an ender of the show and you will understand a little bit more about BM lore. This version at PIA Arena MM 2023 is the first version with MomoMetal as an official member and you can hear the crowd roaring everytime she said her new role metal name, we love Momo.🍑❤ See you next time 🦊🤘🔥

Actually they still roar when Momometal introduces herself, at least in Japan. It was very noticeable at Fox Fest recently. Momo has really found her place in the group, and I look forward to the next album where she can assert herself more in the music as well.

This song is a perfect opener, as the lyrics are a pun: The Japanese word „desu“ is the copula „to be“. As such, it is also used for introductions. „Su-metal desu, Moametal desu, Momometal desu, BABYMETAL desu“ means nothing more or less than „I am Su-Metal, I am Moametal, I am Momometal, we are BABYMETAL“. In Tokyo area Japanese, the u at the end of the word is almost silent, so it sounds almost exactly like the Japanese pronunciation of the word „death“, making it a very Metal introduction. Simple and smart at the same time. At the age when other "naturally" evolved bands met in their garage to start a band, these girls had already stood on stages together, playing to dozens of thousands of people. How can this in any way be less "real"?

Oh no, I was so hoping you'd choose the version from the Legend 1997 concert for this song. It's much more theatrical and my favorite performance. Su celebrated her 16th birthday with this concert. Their academy is called Sakura Gakuin and youtube is full of videos where you can see these girls aged 12-16. Even though I'm primarily a rock and metal fan, I often listen to Sakura Gakuin's songs in the car. They are very melodic and positive. Maybe you could also try them for a reaction. You will definitely get a lot of recommendations here. Thanks and I look forward to another Babymetal with you. 🦊🤘

Nice! “Desu” = I am / We are. Say it with a lisp, and you have “Death”. This is Babymetal’s intro to most concerts. Also, this specific performance is important because it’s Day 2 of “Babymetal Begins”. The first day after Momo became official and got a mic. Babymetal hasn’t performed this song since 2017, and this was brought back again starting this performance. That’s why the crowd went nuts during “Momometal desu!!” 🤘🦊

Legend 1997 is a theatrical performance masterpiece and shouldn't be missed. Great reaction ... and trust me, this song does not give them a break in any way - they've actually said the choreo is some of the most physically demanding. This is one of the few songs where you will actually see them breathing hard at the end. 'BABYMETAL Death' (not just 'Death') is the first track on the first album and most often used as the show opener because, as you have already been told, it is based on a pun and they are literally introducing themselves by name. They had not played this live since the end of 2017 when Yui stopped performing ... until this performance as the first encore of BABYMETAL Begins, Clear Night on 2nd April 2023 ... Momometal's very first concert as an official member - finally she could be included to introduce herself along with Su and Moa - a trio once again ... and 'BABYMETAL Death was back. Well spotted with the opening drum riff - it really is an homage to Metallica's 'One'. I guessed it was the fans of either Band Maid or Lovebites who had complained about comparing bands. Of course you can compare in so far as whether you enjoy one more than another but for the most part they have different styles and not so much in common beyond being Japanese females ... but only BABYMETAL has Su-metal as lead vocalist.. All their nonsense about "wahh organically formed ... multi-million corporate construction blah blah blah" is also wrong. Band Maid was not so "organic" as they try to say - not that it matters a jot - and BABYMETAL was formed entirely around the talents of Su-metal as a vocalist, Yuimetal and Moametal as dancers, singers and performers by one metalhead producer who saw their potential to just maybe rejuvenate the stagnant and dying metal scene in Japan by attracting a new and young audience. They were NOT created because of a corporate formula like the boy and girl bands the "fans" who have complained want you to believe, their was no formula for writing songs guaranteed to be hits (as you would get with most of those girl and boy bands), they didn't audition or just pick three random pretty girls because they were pretty, they had not identified a target audience all but guaranteed to buy the records .... and they got very little to none of the multiple millions (certainly no money was thrown at them by Amuse). They were not booked into arenas with the huge productions etc from the off, they had to work hard to get noticed, to learn their craft, to gain experience, to find an audience that nobody expected would even exist and to earn the backing .... and they did that in borrowed clothes singing and dancing to pre-recorded instruments playing for free in shopping malls, a small side stage by the food hall at a festival, singing maybe one themed song in Sakura Gakuin events or at Idol festivals and when they put on their own shows they started in the smallest venues (Rock May Kan - capacity about 150). BABYMETAL are as organic (or more) than many bands who's origins have never been questioned ... and they have dealt with the hate and the lies with understanding and humility. It is such a shame there are still some people about continuing to spread the lies and misinformation - and many of them do so because they are jealous for their particular favourites of BABYMETAL's originality and talent but mostly for the (hard earned, fought and worked for) success.

Having an idea of how you guys feel about some heavy metal at least. I was very interested to see how you'd feel about this song. I'm glad and a little surprised you seemed to enjoy it as much as you did. I also enjoyed both your little discourses on how reacting can be a bit like walking through a minefield. Lastly I get so tired of the people that are constantly hacking on about how Babymetal isn't a real band et al, ad infinitum. Yet they always seem to be listening just apparently so they can voice their opinions. When I try to imagine how much time, effort, work, training, practice that all the members of Babymetal have put in over the years it is astronomical. They have worked probably harder over the years than a whole lot of "real" bands. IMHO they have more than earned every accolade and all the praise they receive.

This is a great new version of this song for metal fans and long time fans. For you guys, it probably would have been better to do the legend 1997 live version. it was the finale, instead of the opener, and they crucify Su (her j-pop idol persona) so that she can be re-born as Su-Metal. I laugh watching you guys drone on about songs that drone on....LOL

So this song is almost a theatrical production if you watch the correct version. These other versions are almost to pay homage to the original version I feel. In THIS case it was used to more introduce Momometal. I saw some people recommend you check out Babymetal Death! Live 1997 version. I would totally agree with that. THAT is the version reactors should be reacting too as you will likely get lost in the song with all the theatrics going on.

So this was usually used at the beginning of the show Just a few times was used towards the end or as the last song. They actually do few instrumentals, and they used to do even more! Now they do it mainly just before the song Metali, and they recently did it just before the songs Yava and Kagerou! This are intros that blend into the main song! In the past they used to do it really often with songs like Catch me if you can and Rondo of Nightmare! 2 songs that haven't been played live for years. They also used to do a few solo songs for SU, so the other 2 girls could rest, and then a duo song for YUi and Moa so that SU could rest!

Hahaha, "BABYMETAL Death" as a middle part to give them a break? Never ever would they let THIS opportunity go to hype up their crowd by themselves! Most of the time it´s their opener for a concert. It is meant to help to transform the ladies into their stage personas, and to hype up the crowd, so that they´re (sort of) prepared for what is coming 😉 This song is one of the best concert openers I ever listened to, and it is VERY versatile, too! In the "Legend 1997 Apocalypse" concert (2013) they used it as the show closer, and it was a phenomenal, legendary performance. You should watch that, too!

As a break, no, never. It is theirnopener which even thr Text indicates. It is japanese and so death is in reality written desu, which means to be. So the basic Text for each girl is "I am Su Metal" " we are Babymetal:" in teality they were taught to use stage personas and this song helped them into their persona.

For those who say BABYMETAL is not metal, I present you with BABYMETAL Death.😉 OTFGK, but an interesting take posted on BABYMETAL REDDIT by VulpineDeity: Take it a step farther. Not only does 'SU-METAL DESU' mean she's introducing herself, it's also her super-hero transformation phrase. Like on Sailor Moon, Usagi says 'Moon Prism Power!' and turns into Sailor Moon, Suzuka Nakamoto shouts 'I AM SU-METAL' and becomes possessed by the spirit of the Fox God and transforms into the Metal Goddess SU-METAL. The magical girl who transforms into a hero is a huge trope in Japan, comparable to Disney princesses in the west. BABYMETAL DEATH! follows the trope and it's the moment that they all transform into their magical alter egos at the start of the show. 🦊 🦊 🦊 🖖 ❤

Manufactured? Sure, that's fair. You could also say they were the passion project of a rock producer who had watched the metal scene die in Japan and was trying to restart it. Everything new starts as a gimmick, but they put the work in and made it a sub genre in my opinion. Anyways, I've really enjoyed your trip down the foxhole. It's no fun if you enjoy everything, part of the enjoyment is finding out which of the songs hits with you. For instance, Shanti Shanti Shanti and Starlight don't make many reactors top lists, but you guys really enjoyed them. Some absolutely love Arkadia, for you it didn't hit. Keep it up!

Since I'm not particularly a fan of Band-Maid (and mind you I saw them live in Hiroshima last year) but am familiar with some of their fans' common criticism of BABYMETAL I'm assuming the criticism you're talking about in this video is that of Band-Maid is an "organic" band vs BABYMETAL is manufactured. Totally agree with you: who cares at the end of the day? The girls from BABYMETAL have absolutely no shame to have. They worked as hard as anybody can ask anyone for to get where they are at today. Certainly just as much as anyone from Band-Maid. And they did grind their way up, playing in food tents at local idol festivals at the beginning of their careers. But that's what happens when you create a band and respect everyone's individual talent. BABYMETAL is like a wall made of bricks who excell at their particular skills. It doesn't matter to me that Band-Maid (now) writes their songs. I still prefer BABYMETAL songs. The girls do not write the music. And thank god for that! The girls dance and are entertainers. That's the brick that they're bringing to the wall. Extremely talented musicians write music for them. That's another pefect brick. And what happens? Absolute masterpieces. So yeah. Whilst it's "cool" Band-Maid writes their own songs, maybe I'd like them better if they didn't. I'd rather listen to the music made by BABYMETAL's extremely talented pool of artists who write songs for them, thank you very much. This whole organic vs manufactured argument BS doesn't make anything absolutely better. Quite the contrary. When I think of a world without BABYMETAL because everything has to be organic, well, I'm glad we live in a world where incredible talents got together to create something unique that would never exist otherwise. Or explain to me how 3 cute young Japanese girls trained to be entertainers would suddenly decide to also all play different instruments and create something even remotely close to what BABYMETAL is today? Organic bands are fine. But don't try to impose your own biased rules of how music/entertainment should be created to the rest of the world, thanks. Enjoy B-M and let us enjoy BM.

Like your sports analogy. I'd rather BABYMETAL performance over most "garage bands". BABYMETAL is a complication of world-class talent such as composers, lyricists, chreographer, set designers, etc. Overseen by Kobametal and performed by three very talented and professional young ladies, backed by world-class session musicians. As aside, though the brain-child of Kuboto (the pigeon), Band-maid is techically a "manufactured" group. It was the talent agency that allowed Kuboto to gather the band members. Initially, the talent agency dictated which songs they could perform.

After realizing this was their intro, and what they were saying, it puts a whole new spin and set of expectations on the song. Too long sitting down? Probably not long enough when you see them live. Babymetal manufactured? Sure, but this type of fusion required assembly; j-pop + session musicians + metal + all the theatrics... was not going to come together organically. There's a flavor of gatekeeping in "manufactured", and it's ironic because Babymetal sounds exceptional live. What's a band that sounds mid live and depends on studio recordings then?

I think comparisons are reasonable as a benchmark for judging something, as long as what is being compared is the music they produce, not the band itself. Because our ears cannot be deceived, we know that music is good the first time we hear it or at least matching to our taste, that is not something that can be forced.
