I'm disabled, so I was worried I wouldn't make it through the whole show. But I felt no pain...until we left, and then I thought I was going to DIE. There was too much joy and adrenaline running through me for me to notice I was *ruining* myself at the time. Worth it, tho. XD I'd do it again. A hundred times. Excellent reaction. 'Megitsune' is a big favourite, often coming top in fan polls and it is the song they have played live more times than any other. This audience was great ... I think my favouorite BABYMETAL audience for this song was at the Red Fox Festival performance in 2017 - they had an exclusive all female audience . 'Megitsune' was the first single they released after splitting from the parent group Sakura Gakuin to become an independent band in their own right - that was in 2013 - the official video was released when Su-metal was 15, Yuimetal and Moametal were 13, about to turn 14. 'Megitsune' is also arguably the song that showcases better than most what BABYMETAL are about and one that truly reflects their Japanese culture the best starting with the sound of the traditional instruments (shamisen or koto, you decide which) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains the fox mask Su had) which, in Japanese mythology, are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive. It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional female role in Japanese society I think - or maybe it is - whilst also praising and celebrating the women who have played that role over the years for their strength. They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings ("crying at heart, smiling at face") are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not kitsune (foxes), they are megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong. The melody used in the live intro and in the breakdown in the middle of the song is from the very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms). When Su spoke a couple of words and did a high kick she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss. This was the PIA Arena in Yokohama - actually one of the smaller arenas they've played lately with a capacity of about 12-15k people I think Their biggest solo shows to date were in 2016 at the Tokyo Dome with 55k people ... they sold it out 2 nights running and played a completely different set list each night - that was every song from the first two albums and the bespoke choreo for every song too (yes they are the hardest working girls on the planet I suspect). Generally they will play about 11 to 15 songs in a concert - each one with the choreo and every song performed with maximum energy and quality right from the first to the last. To answer your question - I've never seen and can't think of another band quite like them. I've also seen some of the recognised greatest live bands in their prime over the last few decades - I was never better entertained by any of them as I have been at the BABYMETAL concerts I've been to. When I go to see BABYMETAL it is different to any other band - with other bands I hope they are going to be on form, put on a good show and entertain me. When I go to see BABYMETAL none of those things are in any doubt - I'm just hoping the crowd will be good enough for BABYMETAL, that they will all be joining in, jumping on cue, chanting and singing along, doing the right call and response things etc. On the phones at concerts - filming on phones is not allowed in Japan, they are very strict about it (fancam videos are rare) and it makes for a much better experience for everybody there - you don't have to try to see past a sea of phones, people are not watching the show through a screen taking a shaky video they will never watch and everybody is there in the moment, joining in and being a part of the event.

Megitsune is also one of the hardest songs for Su to sing, as it is very much on the edge of her current vocal range(in addition to having an intense choreography and generally difficult song structure that requires absolute mastery of breathing and vocal control). It is one of the very few songs that she can regularly be heard struggling with, especially during long touring schedules. She also frequently uses it as a tuning song to check her voice and ear monitor before shows. That's not so say that she ever does a bad job with it, but she absolutely does struggle with it at times.

I was at the Babymetal concert in Madrid last December, even in a much smaller venue (there was room for about five thousand) and without all the screens and props of the big concerts in Japan, the girls give their 100% the whole time. Su is the same Queen, Moa is the same Angel of Love, Momo is the same bubbly smiling young woman, no matter where they go they are the pro performers they've been since they were little girls. The fans chant all the songs in Japanese, not knowing the language at all of course, but we have it easier since Japanese and Spanish consonant/vocal sounds are pronounced 90% the same. There were some phones recording but not many, I took some clips here and there but tucked it away... why miss all the work the girls are doing in front of me, to capture some crappy quality phone footage when I can watch it on youtube anyway?

It was a trip of 16 hours to get there, but totally worth it. It starts hours before outside, massive lines for merch. Lot's of people talking to each other, cosplaying, taking photo's. After the show there's usually an afterparty with a lot of foreign fans attending. Only one other band i can recommend with good crowd interaction is Electric Callboy, but Babymetal is on their own level!

My 52 year old ass saw them in Louisville last year and it was probably the most exercise I had gotten in years and I loved every minute of it. It was a festival crowd, so not everyone there were fans, so I probably landed on more than a few toes jumping up and down, especially during "Babymetal Death" 😁🤘🦊🤘😁

I’ve seen them twice in Japan and 6 more times around the world and the Japan shows are just on another level. And yes, it is very exhausting, especially when you aren’t in your 20s anymore lol. The good thing about the smaller shows and venues is the more intimate setting and way more personal interactions with the crowd ❤ 🤘🦊🔥 These days they usually play 12-14 songs at their headline shows with small breaks in between to catch breath and grab something to drink.

Largest concert was at the Tokyo Dome of 55k people per night. That's 110k people over two nights. And phone/camera use is strictly forbidden at Japanese concerts. And it's also a form of respect. It's cultural. Great reaction guys!

It depends on the artist and the venue. You can film an entire Asterism show in Japan with no problems. BAND-MAID allowed fans to film one song at Yokohama Arena.

Tokyo Dome was just an amazing show. With that said, they've probably had a "larger" overall crowd at festivals like Rock on the Range or Reeds/Leedings, but I'm sure it's split across multiple stages.

Normally they don't play more than say 70 minutes on a concert, but at least for the audience it is one rush. They are constantly on the move as are the fans. It is so much fun.

BabyMetal is a production. It all grows from the mind of its producer: KobaMetal. He finds/hires the songwriters, the musicians, everything. He just happened to find astonishingly talented performers and songwriters. He clearly cares a great deal for the audience as well.

Largest concert ever was in Rio de Janeiro in 1994, with roughly 3.5 million attendees. It was a free show, but still huge nonetheless. I hope you guys continue to enjoy this band. I was at a show in Japan a few months before this one, my feet were full of blisters on the first night alone, so I had to take it easy on the second night.

Great reaction. Guys, i have seen BabyMetal 5 times now, All in London at Wembley Arena , Brixton Academy, The Apollo and 2 back to back shows at Roundhouse in London not as far as some fans travelled just 500 mile round trip and qued 12 hours to be near front 😁 . It would have been more, but i had to wait because Japan was in lockdown from 2020 to 2023. Unfortunately, you're right. There are quite a few fans that watch the show through their phone . I pick maybe 2 songs before the show because i want to experience the show but not through my phone If they perform the songs i pick i whip my phone out and just hold the camera up and dont look through it. i just hope i got a good recording. I got some great ones, but Moa sat on the edge of the stage a couple of feet away, and my thumb hit the stop recording button 😭 Their is no one like BabyMetal, and i have seen Bands like Iron Maiden and AC/DC but never felt the feelings like i get with BabyMetal, the charisma and stage presence they all have is off the scale especially Su when you see her she commands your attention . I've seen them live several times in Europe, but unfortunately they don't travel with their big stage shows. Those are massive productions, built specifically for particular arenas. But only for a couple of shows, and then never to be seen again (until the Blu-ray comes out, anyway). My favourite is probably their 2016 performances at the Tokyo Dome. But, while the shows over here in Europe are smaller and less spectacular, the girls themselves never hold anything back. And in some ways it is actually nicer to see them at a smaller venue. More intimate, I guess. As for their creative process, it is important to understand that Babymetal is really the creation of Key Kobayashi, or *Koba-metal.* You will never see him on stage, but all the fans know him, and he is the real creative force behind it all. He is a life-long metal head, who came across Suzuka Nakamoto and asked himself "why has no one ever used vocals like hers in a metal band?" And while I doubt he ever thought it would become this successful, he took the idea seriously enough to see it through. He collaborates with a number of great musicians and songwriters to create the songs he wants, and spends inordinate amounts of time finetuning their production. The musicians you see on stage (called the Kami Band) are all amazing session musicians, but they generally do not write the music. The girls are invited to collaborate (and have all contributed to the lyrics of a few songs), but they were only 10-12 years old when they started, and their tasks were to sing and dance. So that is what they do. Everyone is a specialist, and Babymetal is a team effort. More of a metal themed stage production than a conventional band, really. There is so much to say about the history of the Babymetal phenomenon, so let us know if you are interested in the details. I am sure the fans will be happy to fill you in. For now, I would suggest that you step back in time a little bit. But perhaps not to the very beginning. I don't think you are quite ready for that yet. I've been able to see them live here in Belgium right before the Covid pandemic started. It was amazing. The fandom is called 'The One' and you really feel that at a concert. Here in Belgium, it's not that easy to get people really hyped, but holy shit, at their show, the crowd went wild. I think it is the same everywhere with Babymetal. There's just something about them that brings people together. Been a fan since 2015 and although I'm not as obsessed with them as I used to be anymore, I'm probably forever going to remain a fan. Megitsune was the first song I heard from them and ever since then it's still my favorite to this day.

In general songs from early are better to enjoy with the original formation so you can appreciate the evolution, any song after 2019 including songs from latest album and collabs are ok with latest live shows like this one. If you’ve either A) Ever been in the ocean and experienced a riptide current, or B) Been to a BABYMETAL show, you’ll know what it feels like to be in a mosh pit, and suddenly move, or be carried, by the crowd to the left and then right by literally 10 feet back and forth, lifted literally off the ground, during that bridge section of the song😆🙂 It’s like an ocean wave; EVERYONE in that crowd is gonna be there up front to mimic the left/right motion/wave, and damned if it’s something I hadn’t experienced in a lit until those lives shows if this song 🙂,

Hell yeah guys! The fans all know what do because this song is their most played live: 340+ times since 2013. Furthermore, the audience will always be part of their act. They build in quite a bit of crowd engagements at every set. Even more so when they're on tour, with a smaller and more intimate crowd. This show was in April 2023, but you should see how they run the crowd 8 years ago: Road of Resistance (Official Live), when they were 17/15 (with a 20K sold out crowd). Also, there are a few logo'd videos from MetRock 2015, which is one of the best festival crowds from a Babymetal show. Look forward to more! 🤘🦊

if you go to a Babymetal concert expect to come out soaked and compleatly exausted... Every Song has its own crowd interactions which moast of the visitors know... for example sitting on the floor(METALI!!), worshiping the fox God (Headbangeerrrr!!!), a wall of death (Road of Resistance) or a rowing pit (Megitsune). I where on a few concerts of them and due to the samller locations I was able to see them verry close (3row). It was always fun!!!

Ive never been to a metal concert (actually the only concert I've been to was a projekt revolution tour show with linkin park and MCR) so I'm stoked but also really wish i could see them in Japan. If you want a recommendation, I'd go for Akatsuki ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/nWOWaGV5arV9gq8 ) But for Norwegian music, I love Katzenjammer (means caterwauling in German). They're four women who all sing and play all instruments, and they all switch out during concerts. They once said in an interview that they all play around 30 instruments, but they don't play any of them very well. Their signature instruments are the bass balalaika with the Cheshire cat's face on it, and the drum set which includes a trash can, an lunch box and a toaster. This fan base is something else; I remember seeing them at the House of Blues in Chicago, and there was another fan handing out chocolates to the other fellow fans in line, even though she had had a very rough few weeks personally, but just because…Gimme Chocolate” is the song that started it all, and here someone was doing that because we all had found a weirdly non-judgmental family of fans, even though we didn’t really know it yet. People that take the time to care about a thing that much 🙂(btw, I’m still friends with her to this day after that experience…then we all went bar-hopping together…it’s just a true “g out of awesome people,” because “fandom” doesn’t do it justice 🙂)

Also, side note: You mentioned that Only Japan gets the big shows, but here’s the real shocker: even smaller venues back in the day, they all out absolutely EVERYTHING into those smaller shows, to a level you wouldn’t believe. It’s why I actually prefer the smaller venues now when seeing them live 🙂

Babymetal is a team. They have a team of writers they use. The writers almost certainly work with the ladies (as does the choreographer) but outside of a few songs the ladies do not write the music. In fact neither do the musicians you see performing on stage. The band just plays the music live, they don't even actually play on the studio tracks, just live.

Although the studio musicians on BABYMETAL tracks are usually uncredited, Kami Band member Leda Cygnus played guitars and bass on the 'Arkadia' and 'Amore' studio tracks. He's also responsible for the song arrangement for 'No Rain, No Rainbow'. I'm not aware of any other Kami Band members with studio credits for BABYMETAL songs.

The audience participation shows the essential role.of Moa, Momo and Yui, the support singers/dancers, who link the crowd with the performance. You'll note that the crowd sings with them, as to sing with the main vocals is rude in Japan. If you want to see them really work the crowd at a young age, try Headbanger live at Legend 1997.

I think that their bigger audience was in 2014 in their first big concert out of Asia. 60.000 british metalheads which knew nothing about them at Sonisphere Festival in UK. Look for Ijime Dame Zettai live at Sonisphere and see how these three teenager girls (Sumetal was 16, Yui and Moa 14 years old at that time) coverted an uninterested, nasty crowd into thousands of new fans. It has been called "the Sonisphere miracle", and if you watch that video, you will understand why.

I went to a BABYMETAL concert last December here in Spain and even though they were not so well known in my country, in the most popular songs, like this one, I saw people who were not interacting get up from their seats to do the dance with them. Unforgettable.

FYI it is a big NONO in Japan for concert goers to take any photos, or recordings of most concerts in JAPAN. though some still do it.

"The One" is the official name for the fans and members of Babymetal, together they form The One. Su-metal has mentioned more than once how she enjoys creating songs together with attendees at their concerts around the world. I interpret it as every show being a unique experience where everyone in the room contributes to the performance. My legs were numb towards the end of the evening when I saw them last year, but it was awesome anyway. 😄

The fans give all of themselves to the artists because they can feel a similar attitude from the artist to the fans. These girls have been giving 110% at every show and have fought against elitism and gate keeping since they were 12. The fans who know that will always respect that and give their all :)

The side-girls have a specific job: In Japan, it's considered impolite to sing along at a concert. The rest of the audience is there to hear the band, not you, so it's not typical to go to a show and sing along. The side-girls are specifically there to give the crowd a part that it's OK to chant along with. Keep your eyes out for their tour announcements. They do North America all the time, and the smaller shows are just as intense (but with more people with their phones out for sure ☺) And ya, the sooner you can watch a whole concert recording from start to finish, the better. The hype that you're getting from single songs just rachets up from song to song and by the end your adrenaline is through the roof for the finale. There's no band like them.

Great reaction, thanks! "Megitsune" is one of their most loved songs and their most played live one: 337 times since it was premiered in 2013. The style sub-genre is electronicore, a mix between electronica and metalcore with a hardcore style breakdown. It took 36 demos to Takehiro Mamiya best known as Yuyoyuppe (or Yuppemetal), the song's arranger, until Kobametal (their producer) was 100% happy with the final result. It may sound crazy but this is why "Megitsune" is one of their best songs (if not the best). Japanese crowds are incredibly coordinated not to mention that taking pics or video is strictly forbidden. Good luck with the mask. BABYMETAL merch is sold in limited quantities so it's always sold out and become a collector's item. So, it's difficult to get that mask but not impossible if you know where to search. I got one of those last year... and they are not cheap. 🤘‍🦊

It is considered rude to film with your phone at a Japanese show. It happens but is more rare than in the US. Biggest Babymetal specific crowd was 55,000 each night for two nights in a row at the Tokyo Dome. This show is actually at a smaller venue for them, something like 10-12,000. Someone will correct me but PIA Arena is not a huge venue for Babymetal. Remarkably in the US they play in clubs as small as 1700 capacity. I have seen them in clubs with around 3000 capacity.

После этого уже пишут сами слова и записывают трек. До "the One" была такая практика: пишут трек, везут его на концерт или живое выступление, смотрят реакцию фанатов, подправляют если нужно, после этого официально записывают для альбома. "The One" выпустили сразу, без обкатывания на публике, но это концептуальный альбом. Возможно Коба-метал вернётся к прежней практике.

The fandom is called „The One“ for a reason. :-) It really does feel like that. Speaking of The One, it sounds like you are not taking a half-assed approach at this with trying to register for the „fan club“ (which is also called The One). Unfortunately, the process is a real PITA, at least for non-Japanese fans. I think the dancing has a huge part in getting the hype up. It helps to energize the crowd, which in turn energizes the girls on stage, making it spiral up to insane heights. I might not be the best example, as I recently turned 50 and haven‘t exercised for about 30 years, but at their show last year, I was about to tap out about half way through. I actually retreated to the back of the venue for the last two songs to get some breathing room. It was pretty pathetic. Can you imagine being THAT guy in a BABYMETAL crowd? :-S As others have already said, BABYMETAL is not like a normal band, it‘s a whole team. There are professional song writers, lyricists, choreographers, instrumentalists, etc., all contributing to the final result. Many metalheads have a problem with that. But I think it’s the only way how it can be that good. If you look at any one of these different facets, you‘ll notice that it‘s top notch. Everything. I have two recommendations, both of which have great crowd scenes as well: „Road of Resistance - Live in Japan“ for some Speed Metal, and the official MV of „The One“ for more like a Power Ballad.

Babymetal makes it rather hard to join the fan club and to buy merch. Just signing up to their website is an adventure. Babymetal runs on FOMO, so most of their merch is very limited runs. This is from the performance at Black Night at PIA Arena in April 2023. I was at this show jumping up and down and yelling “Sore!” in a manner most unbefitting for a man of 47 years old. After the show, the fans all have to go a nearby pubs and rehydrate ourselves with Japanese beer. The musicians don’t have any role in the song writing. They are hired session musicians. Babymetal has a song writing team that is overseen by their producer Kobametal. Babymetal shows in Japan are very hard to get tickets to. You have to enter a lottery just win the chance to go, so everyone that is there is a hardcore fan. The regulars like myself travel to Japan several times a year to see them do these shows. The show at PIA Arena was actually a crowd of 12,000, which is on the smaller side for one of their stadium shows. The biggest show they have ever done was at Tokyo Dome in 2016, which was 55,000 fans each night over two nights. A full Babymetal set for one of these shows is around 14-15 songs, which works out to about 90 minutes for the full show. Babymetal give this level of effort in every song of the set and they are often dripping with sweat by the end of the show (and so are the fans).
