First time reaction -- Homefree feat Avi -- Ring of Fire

So happy that I took the advice of many subscribers to check out this excellent a capella group. Very different to Pentatonix but in a great way. Really enjoyed this. Looking forward to hearing more.

Avi grew up in California near the Sequoia forests. His grandparents lived about an hour away and had horses and a ranch of sort. He and his mother used to to go out where the Sage and Stone (One of his songs to his mother) was and hunt for arrow heads. One of my favorite videos of him is as a little 2 to 3 year old, wearing a red jacket and a cowboy hat sledding down a hill backwards. As Michael, his dad catches up, he is shaking his head that Avi was completely fine with the whole event. Love the reaction and I love Avi and Home Free.

If there is a "rivalry" between fans of Homefree and Pentatonix, its a friendly one. For the most part we are all fans of "a cappella" music and recognize these as two of the best in the business. We all love this rendition of "Ring of Fire" because it is one of the few times you can find Tim Foust and Avi Kaplan, two of the best basses in the world, preforming together. I'm more of a Pentatonix fan than Homefree but that is because of a preference in music genre not the quality of the group. Homefree had been preforming long before Pentatonix was formed and most all "a cappella" fans acknowledge that Tim Faust has a wider vocal range than Avi. But most also acknowledge that the vocal timber of each artist makes them better suited to different genres of music. My preference in country and folk music is Homefree, in pop or rock I prefer the sound of Pentatonix. But I'm a huge fan of both groups.

Very true. There's a natural connection, since Home Free won the Sing-Off the year after Pentatonix and Avi did this crossover. Even bigger connection--they're both really, REALLY good. I consider PTX, Home Free, and Voctave to be the big three. They're all professional and deliver not only their individual musical talents but also clean, sharp, impeccable performances. And they're all a lot of fun, too! Full disclosure: PTX is #1 with me, but song by song I'm coming closer to being a true PentaFry.

Well, while I fully agree about the toxic comments you don't actually have to like and appreciate both groups to be a true fan of one of the group. I personally appreciate the talent of PTX, but I don't like their arrangements so I don't listen to them, ie I am not a fan of them. I am a super fan of Home Free, though and love and appreciate everything about them. So maybe not generalise and say that we aren't true fans if we don't appreciate both groups?

@@carinalindberg7377 I appreciate your point of view. Lots of my friends (I'm among PTX's "senior" brigade of fans) think Pentatonix is good but too "pop" for their tastes and I respect that. Similarly, some PTX fans don't care for Home Free's generally country style. But I think Jessica Meagher got it right--it's the people who make toxic comments that aren't true fans. Neither band would condone that kind of talk. How about changing "appreciate" to "respect both groups," maybe? Me, I deeply love them both, though PTX came first.

@@janetranslates I have no problem with the word appreciate, it's a super important word and feeling, and I understand and agree with that the toxic commenters aren't true fans. But to go from there to saying that you are only a true fan if you appreciate both groups is just not something I appreciate. We are all entitled to call ourselves a true fan of one group without the involvement of the other group. They are not attached to each other, they are not a package deal in any way. They each stand perfectly on their own.

They are all friends, they won the sing off the next season after Pentatonix. so Pentatonix fans are pentaholics, and Home Free fans are Home fries. Most people that are pentaholics,are also Home fries

Home Fries and Pentaholics get along very well. A lot of us are both. Level wise, I consider them almost equal. Actually Tim helped Avi to get the low lows. For me Home free are craftsman that are mostly fun, even have great serious songs. Those very solid. Ptx is more sophisticated fine arts. Perfectionism and fun. Eye candy. Both stepped in the other musical spectrum, but feel comfy in their more country or more electronic, poppy material.

Tim had the "lead" in this song, which he shared with Avi. His vocal range is even greater than Avi's...but his tone is completely different. Love them both so much. Love them all to be honest. They are all each very unique and so is their sound.

Oh Bless Your Heart ---- you have just been Home Fried! Tim Foust has a 6 octave range, and sings a gorgeous tenor as well as a bass that is below the deepest note on a piano keyboard. Austin - the high tenor, has a pure, high, clear and hypnotic tenor. All the boys in between are super heroes of a capella. I like to refer to them as the Giants of A Capella since their average height is 6 ft 2 in. When they take pictures of themselves with fans, they tower over most of their adoring public. They have such an amazing mixture of voices it will simply blow your mind. They won the Sing Off the year after PTX won. They are such fans of each other. So happy you discovered Home Free. Please continue to react to them. You will NEVER be disappointed and perhaps frequently amused. They are a hoot.

Austin Brown is the singer you referred to as being a Mitch of the group, the beat boxer is Adam Rupp, the rest are Rob Lindquist with a beard like Avis, Chris Rupp beat boxers brother,( he is no longer in the group as of 2016) was replaced by Adam Chance,( he is called Chance since there is the other Adam) and then Tim Foust the last bass you heard. Chris's Rupp and Adam Rupp formed the group in 2000 and there has been several past members. So you have Austin, Rob, Chance, Adam and Tim. I'd recommend listening to How Great Thou Art for pure harmony that is a master piece IMO and then their Man of Constant Sorrow. They are all extremely talented and PTX (pentaholics) and Home Free ( home fries) all get along very well. As one reactor put it he is a pentafry. Voiceplay and Voctave are two more groups that will be requested, the Oogie Boogie Song by Voiceplay is a good one and then Warriors. Voctave any Disney songs are a must.

Welcome to Home Free, we the fans are Home Fries & are fircely loyal but also love other acapella groups. It's not to us a competition, but just loving acapella for its artistry. While Home Free is "labeled" a country group, they often step out of the "country" genre to do their art. And art it is. Listen next to either Helplessly Hoping (cover of a Crosby Stills & Nash song from 1969 the B side of the single Marrakesh Express) or How Great Thou Art the old Gospel Hymn....both will astonish you - the harmonies & chords will blow your mind. Also their country but soft country side is really heard in their cover of Die a Happy Man, I *REALLY* reccomend this one.

Home Free is basically a barbershop quartet plus a percussion section -- Adam Rupp! (When you hear them cover "All About That Bass", they actually do some of it in true barbershop style!) Bringing Avi onboard for "Ring of Fire" made it possible for a bass to solo without losing the bass line that is the foundation to those beautiful harmonious chords. As you saw, Avi and Tim pass the solo back and forth with the higher voices carrying the support role that's normally assigned to the bass. You will find lots more wonderful music in HF's pre-COVID catalog, AND they are now doing some impressive "at home" productions -- individual parts recorded in their homes across America and then stitched together by their sound engineer. The only "caution" is to save their cover of Cam's "Mayday" until you have heard at least 5 or 6 of their "normal" songs. Welcome to the Home Fries!

Tim is the lowest bass of the most popular acapella bands (out of Voiceplay, Home Free, and Pentatonix). Each bass from the 3 groups has something they are the master or just the best at. Avi has the best full rounded low notes. Geoff Castelluci (of Voiceplay) has Subharmonic notes mastered and Tim (from Home Free) is the best at his growl notes. Tim is my favorite of the 3. You should check out more from Home Free. If you Like Bass Singers I'd also recommend checking out "The Sound of Silence" cover by Tomi P. It just made me happy to hear you compare Tim to Scott. Just knowing what a discovery you are in for. Not to say they are the same, but Tim is the Avi of Home Free. They both are true bass and both incredible in their ranges. Tim was singing up high for his verse, but didn't do the drop to the lows like Avi did. He showed at the end what he is capable of on the low end, and that isn't it for him. Tim has incredible control and power when he goes low. Home Free is an amazingly talented group. I can't imagine anyone who has an ear for acapella not enjoying their style, raw talent, and refined ability.

Mainly they do lyric stuff of all genres that shows off their harmonies and their empathetic warmth...or their quirky humor. Or both. Who's Who: Austin Brown, high tenor. (Angelic face, angelic curls, has fun being the pretty boy of the group.) Rob Lindquist, lead tenor/baritone. (Papa bear, big beard, family man, bedrock lead.) Adam Chance, baritone/bass. He's one of their multi-position players. (Neat, trim beard compared to Rob's jungle, with an air of very quiet macho. Usually called "Chance" to distinguish him from Adam Rupp, the beatboxer, who is one of the founders.) Tim Foust, 5-octave range. His "home base" is low baritone to basso profundo, but he's got unusual strength in his upper registers, too, and every so often they give him a chance to strut his stuff as a solid, clear tenor. His timbre compares very nicely with Austin's clear, bright tones and Rob's warm, grounded feel. (Tall, lanky, near-black hair. Through most of the video's he's got a shoulder-length page-boy. Late in the COVID quarantine he cuts his hair--but starts letting an elegant white temple streak show. He's got a minimal scruffy beard...like he's thinking about growing it out but hasn't yet decided.) Adam Rupp, beat-boxer and high baritone. One of the two founding brothers who started the group. (His brother Chris has since moved on to a solo career.) More or less clean-shaven, tawny hair, usually seen with his mouth in a weird shape as he manages yet another amazing sound. Twice winner of the World Beat Boxing Championship the last I checked. Sometimes nicknamed "The Freak of Nature" because he can do so much with his beat boxing. On pieces that are ill-suited to percussive, mainly their ventures into hymns and other worship music, he becomes a fifth singing voice, as a fair enough mid-range singer. High baritone is where I'd place him, but, nu. I'm not an expert. In the early videos you will see them with Chris Rupp, before he left and Chance joined the group. Chris is tawny haired with a cowboy hat. The last I looked they had four albums out, and a mess of singles. They're gaining public notice even as we speak--they appear to be making the leap from "successful low-visibility professionals" to "successful high-visibility professionals." Suggestions: Country Western: I love "My Church," "Elvira" (done WITH the original singers, the Oakridge Boys, who have been popular in Country Western for at least thirty-forty years...), the one you just watched (Ring of Fire). "A Man of Constant Sorrow." Gospel: "Children Go Where I Send Thee", performed with the late Kenny Rogers. (One of those perfect, dazzling little gems in which everyone gets to walk away looking their very best, and lovable to boot. Aging Kenny Rogers at his best, having the time of his life serving as mentor and introducing these "new kids on the block" to his own solid, established fan base. The kids admiring, respectful, and having FUN. Do I adore this song? Yes. Yes, I do...) "Amazing Grace," with Peter Hollins. Sweet as honey... "Go Rest High Upon That Mountain." A piece that has become a common funeral song among CW singers. Pop: "All About The Bass (Base)" Cover of Meghan Trainor's pop hit. Funny as hell. The boys enjoy themselves *without* taking away the original artist's positive message. "The End of the Road." Cover of Boyz II Men's R&B classic. If you watch other reactors like yourself, there's a certain delight in watching black listeners come in dubious and within minutes stop the track, turn out to their audience, and say, "Ok. These boys can SING." Then start over, loving it. I also love their rendition of "Auld Lange Syne," a traditional Scottish New Year's song. Pure bawdy fun? "The Butts Remix." Sweet silliness? "Honey I'm Good." My very most favorite of all, bar none? "Everybody Walkin' This Land." A protest song for the moment, I guess. An anthem. Brilliant. There is very little I do not like of theirs, honestly. And I hope that's helpful AND gives you a start exploring the group.

The technique that was used at the end of the song is known as a growl. The growl at the end is a G1. Tim can growl down to a B0. Tim, Avi, and another bass named Geoff have several bass battles on youtube comparing their low ranges. I highly suggest checking those out once you have dug a little bit farther in the rabbit hole that is Voiceplay and Home Free.

How Great Thou Art is beautiful and for a completely different sound Their cover of Sunday Best is more on the Gunn side. It's one of their Quarantine songs. They release a new video every other Friday. Today's video will be released tomorrow due to this day being 9-11. They thought it wouldn't be right to release it on that day. There is no "Scott" per se. Everyone is the front person depending on the song, except for the beatboxer. He sings rarely and when he does he is a harmonizing tenor. Home Free and Pentatonix inhabit different genres for the most part. Home Free gravitates to country but they have done some R&B, rock and pop as well but with their own style blended in.

Pentatonix started by winning season 3 of the NBC acapella competition show "The Sing-Off" in 2011. Home Free had been singing as a group for years but also entered the Sing-Off competition for season 4 in 2013 (NBC skipped a year for some reason). The acapella group VoicePlay also competed in the competition in season 4, which was won by Home Free. Both Pentatonix and Home Free are great groups with talented singers, amazing bass singers, and astounding beat boxers. Home Free has been known primarily as a country style group, but they can sing just about anything.

Welcome to Home Free. Tim Foust is the base but can go baritone tenor or what ever else you need him to go. The guy has five octaves . Avi and Geoff Castellucci the base for Voice Play consider Tim is the master of bases. They all know .each other. Dude with huge beard is Rob normal tenor, Austin is the high tenor, beat boxer is Adam Rupp and his brother is the guy with cowboy hat is the founder of group. He left the group to do his own thing and they went out and found a new baritone Adam Chance we all call him Chance who has a beautiful voice and handles bass when Tim decides to sing tenor A.K.A Mayday need to check it out.

All male vocal band - high tenor Austin Brown, tenor Rob Lundquist, in this older video Chris Rupp, baritone, who has stepped down and been replaced by Adam Chance baritone/bass, Adam Rupp, two time world champion beat boxer (the other founding member of the group with his brother Chris). And last but not least, Tim Foust , bass man with a 5 octave range. It’s my understanding that Tim actually taught Avi how to expand his bass range. Love Home Free! And Pentatonix. The only suggestion that I have as you enter the Home Free rabbit hole is to save "Mayday" for when you know the group and their usual talents. If you wait, it will blow your mind to see the flexibility of every individual in this group. There is incredible talent here ... have fun.

Home Free is my favorite accapella group. These guys are so talented, caring, and funny! Tim taught Avi how to sing lower. Tim has a 5+ octave range. Chance has a 4+ octave range. Adam beatboxer won world champion of beatboxing 2 years in a row. Austin grew up traveling with his dad’s gospel quartet. Rob majored in music and emphasized opera. It’s a great group. End of the road really shows Robs soul.

Almost without exception every cover they have done I've liked more than the original. There are, IMO, to many to recommend. I think you should just pick a song you like and watch how they sing it. You can't make a wrong choice. Nice reaction.

Home Free and Pentatonix are friends... They are both great a capella groups and although HF are mostly country oriented, they also have many incredible songs you will love! Tim Foust is taking the lead in this song and he is the bass (and capable of lower notes than Avi..) Avi puts the cowboy hat on in tribute to Tim's low.. I don't care for country music either, but here are a few they have done that you would love: JOHN MAYER - IN THE BLOOD (Home Free version), CAM - MAYDAY (Home Free version), and a great and fun one, MAN OF CONSTANT SORROW from the movie O' Brother Where Are Thou. (They are all over 6' tall so Mayday is especially sexy to me!) There are many that are not in the country genre.

The fan base overlaps for these groups. There might be a ‘friendly rivalry ’ between them but the two groups are so different you really can’t compare them. The fans are some of the least toxic on social media lol

YES. Home Free is the "other" group that is rewriting the book on a capella worldwide. For Home Free may I recommend their "Man of Constant Sorrow", and my favorite, "Helplessly Hoping" (Crosby, Stills & Nash) (and then a quarantined Italian Youth Choir's cover of Home Free's arrangement).

Tim Foust, the bass for Home Free, has a five octave range which is crazy. They are a “country” group but also have done a broad range of genres. The two groups ARE friends. They met on Sing-Off season 4 (I think?) which Home Free won. PTX had been guest coaches & they hit it off. Tim Foust (the first guy singing) is actually their bass but has a wide range; he gave Avi bass tips, too. Austin Brown (the second guy) is a tenor; kinda like Mitch but with Scott’s groove/growl/whatever. Rob, the big, bearded guy, is another tenor. Adam is their beatboxed & his brother Chris is the baritone. They do mostly country a capella. Avi also appeared, but didn’t sing, in their video for Champagne Taste On a Beer Budget, which is a funny song.

Tim Foust is the bass(the last note singer) Austin is high tenor, beatboxer Adam ,him and his brother Chris ( guy with hat) started the group in college, but Chris left the group and new one is Chance ( not in this video), and guy with glasses is Rob low tenor

Welcome to home free!!! They have a huge following and they have a ton of videos on their KZbin channel. Tim who sang lead is the bass and can go super low but can also sing tenor. The guy that sang at the beginning high is Austin the high tenor. The guy with the beard is Rob the 2nd tenor and the guy with the cowboy hat is Chris who is baritone. In 2016 Chris left the group and Adam Chance took his place as baritone but also does some bass. Adam Rupp is the beatboxer and has won world competitions.

Great reaction to Home Free! Welcome to the equally fantastic world of Home Free and their fans the Home Fries. There is certainly a crossover between them and PTX as to fans but the groups are quite different. For more HOme Free, try their version of Man of Constant Sorrow, How Great Thou Art, Daddy Sang Bass and End of the Road. Then, once you are familiar with them and their voices, listen to their masterpiece Mayday for a showcase of their versatility and ranges. Tim, their bass has a crazy 5 octave range and their beat boxer is crazy good. Please do more of their stuff. You will enjoy it!

Man of constant sorrow - please do that one. It shows the group much more "normally". This was the one where Tim, the lead bass, was singing as lead.
