Perhaps I should add, that his dad died just before his real break through and one of his best childhood friends went to prison, which is what he is singing about in 'You're Not There' (about his dad) and 'criminal mind' and even better so in 'Better Than Yourself' (Criminal Mind Pt. 2) about his childhood friend. So the songs are honest and truthful, even though he was not poor himself.

He grew up in free town Christiania in Copenhagen Denmark that is considered to be kind of a tough neighborhood, but to say that he was poor is a bit exaggerated. As a child, he starred in the first 3 of a highly popular Danish movies series and he also was a voice actor in Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3.
