I waited so long for someone to react to this. Wild to think about how Merle was once an inmate at San Quentin while Johnny performed there, and then he's singing on stage on TV with Johnny Cash while doing an an impersonation of him. He made a hard 180° turn in his life.

Johnny and Merle were the best of friends. He got inspired by Johnny when he saw him in prison and got his life turned around!

There's another great video of Merle Haggard doing a Marty Robbins impression in front of Marty Robbins. Marty's reaction is kinda funny.

Marty's parents and family were originally from near me in Oklahoma. But his parents moved out to California right around the Dust Bowl and Great Depression, about a year or two before Marty was born. He wasn't born here, even though he believed himself to be. He debuted his hit song "Okie from Muskogee" in Muskogee, Oklahoma. "Okie" was kinda a derogatory term Californians used to refer to Oklahomans who moved out there during that Great Depression period. I had a high school English teacher in 2007-08 named Mrs. Haggard. I convinced my friend to jokingly as her if her dad's name was Merle. To our surprise, she said funnily enough, her husband was related to him down the line.
