I don't know if you know it but Michel Berger was France Gall's husband. He's still considered as one of the greatest composers of all times in France and he composed most of the songs from France Gall. Yes, to me the vocal style of Michel Berger always was to just sing like if he was talking to you, without trying to do vocal performances. It's always direct to the point and there's never too much or too less. It's always exactly only what the songs need. It's pretty much the opposite of 90% of the singers today who try too hard to impress and the songs sometime suffer from it. Michel Berger impressed by the music and the songs, and it's pretty much all that matters in the end.

You should have listened to the long version (with the solo), it's magic, really. Fun fact: Michel Berger composed "SOS d'un terrien en détresse" for Daniel Balavoine in Starmania ! Ce titre : "Michel Berger - Chanter pour ceux qui sont loin de chez eux" aidé a lancer au moins 2 carrières : Lââm qui avait repris le titre, et la mélodie avait été aussi reprise par un groupe de rap (La cliqua) : Rocca - Les jeunes de l'univers. (D'autres l'ont remise depuis, en tout cas c'est deux là avaient cartonné dans les hits parades grâce a ce titre de Michel.)

This song was played at my grandfather's funeral. It's so beautiful. The lyrics are very meaningful as well. I'll always love it. Those whales in the beginning really add to the song, so does the video. It's perfect. I'll add a comment I read somewhere on KZbin that's inspirational : "If those polar bears can survive in such cold environment, then there is limitless potential".

Hi Dereck, Bass is definitely not synthetic :). Jannick Top is a classic trained cello player who later on switched to bass. He was a member of the avant garde jazz rock band "Magma", and outside France, he has been collaborating with loads of world fame artists such as Ray Charles, Nina Hagen, Herbie Hancock, Barbara Hendricks, Eurythmics, Ennio Morricone... (credit Wikipedia). And at 4:15, I would say this is oboe rather than clarinette.

Michel Berger was a song writer at his begginings, he didn't want to be a singer. he made a song that no one wanted and decide to sing it, and that was a success. he wrote for Daniel Ballavoine and Johnny Halliday and many others like his Wife: France Gall
