It is a very nice song, very well interpreted.. Keep in mind that, at the time of recording, homosexuality was still considered a mental illness in France (not up until 1981 was it not, and the "Register of Homosexuality" destroyed at the police department). Plus, Charles Aznavour was heterosexual, so double bravery for him to sing it, for it was not a common move to "advocate" for it when you were not "concerned" (I put a lot of " " because I'm not a native English speaker and I'm not sure I'm using the right words, but hopefully, everyone understands what I mean). Love your analysis, always. Keep up the good work. Xoxo.

This is one of the greatest songs ever written. I regret the stupidity of my youth when I rejected all those great French performers for English speaking singers. But how could I understand such a song st such a tender age when homosexuality was very much still taboo. Especially in France. Thank you for bringing this to the light.

Simply, it is immediately easier with translator aplication !! 😉 I follow your channel with a lot of fervor because even if I don't understand what you say in each of your analyses, I realize that you are someone extremely sensitive and that's international. You who seem to like beautiful songs, I would like to bring you a suggestion. Can you make a video with "Louise" by Gérard Berliner? I'm so glad that you reacted and loved this song, Dereck ! :) All along the song, Aznavour actually reframes the french term "homo". It means "gay" but at that time it was an insult and it still is for some people. So he splits it in two : homo = homme oh = man oh ... to be sure to recall everyone to the fact that a gay man is a man ! ;) And yes, Lara's interpretation is also something ! :)

As They Say lyrics by Charles Aznavour : I live alone with mom In a very old apartment Sarasat Street I have to keep me company One turtle, two canaries And a pussy To let mama rest Very often I shop And the kitchen I tidy up, I wash, I wipe On occasion I also sting By machine Work doesn't scare me I'm a bit of a decorator a bit of a stylist But my real job is at night That I exercise, transvestite I am an artist I have a very special number Which ends in full nude After striptease And in the room I see that Males can't believe their eyes I am a gay As they say Around three o'clock in the morning We are going to eat with friends Of all genders In any bar-tabac And there, we have a field day And without complex We unpack truths On people we have in the nose We stone them But we do it with humor Wrapped in puns Wet with acid We meet retards Who to impress their table Walk and wave Aping what they think we are And cover the poor fools ridiculous It gesticulates and speaks loudly It plays the divas, the tenors Stupidity Me the lazzis, the jeers Leave me cold since it's true I am a gay As they say When a new day is born I return to find my lot of loneliness I take off my eyelashes and my hair Like a poor unhappy clown Of weariness I go to bed but don't sleep I think of my joyless loves so derisory To this boy handsome as a god Who without doing anything set the fire In my memory My mouth will never dare tell him my sweet secret My tender drama Because the object of all my torments Spends most of his time To women's beds No one really has the right To blame me for judging me And I specify That it is nature that Is solely responsible if I am a gay As they say

Hello Dereck, the translation you had just omitted the most important word of the song, "i am a homo (sexual), as they say" and not a man. Much love from France .At the time this song really hit everyone's consciousness and sensitivity especially because of the picture of this sensible being that is drawn... and the last words..... "I precise, it's nature that made me this way, (I didn't choose it)". those last words really had a huge importance probably in helping the gay people to get more "indulgence" if we can say that. Because everybody knows that the core of the "problem" for people who don't understant "that".... it comes from nature simply not from will. I have to confess it personnally took me 40 years to really understand and I would say, even believe it and recognize it for "what" it is.... mother nature creating beings the way she wants

Possibly my favorite Aznavour song. Just brilliant. I love how much respect he shows in the song. How he presents this person with love and understanding. How he shows the hurt this person has to endure just because he is a "homo" (short in French for homosexual; it's the equivalent of "gay"; but depending on the tone you use when saying it, it can become more derogatory/intentionally hurtful.) It was a rare song at the time when he sang it. It wasn't popular then to advocate for an end to discrimination based on sexuality. He did it in the best way, by showing us that this person is just like everyone else. They are no more defined by their sexuality than heterosexual people are. It's the finger that others point that "makes" it into a problem. In the end, we all humans. Who cares about color, gender and all that stuff? If the planet blows, we'll all be skeletons - same state, same color, same death. Everything else is just noise.

just a precision, when he says "je suis un homo comme ils disent" the translation seems to suggest it means I'm a men O... but it's actually homo as in homosexual... just a shorten and somewhat pejorative version of the term. It juste makes more sense that way... the character is putting emphasis on another way people typecast him. And thank you for all your reaction to french music it's great to watch as always!

The translation isn't good : "Je suis un homo" doesn't mean" I am an homo (sapiens)", or a "man", but a homosexual, a gay. That's what the song is about. Anyway, I love your videos : you are so emotional and in the same time, your musical analysis are really interesting.

There is a pun in the song too, when he says "Je suis un homme oh comme ils disent" (I'm a man) and makes us hear "je suis un homo comme ils disent" (I'm gay) so many people understand the song in different ways and both are correct

Comme ils disent (English translation) I live alone with mom in a very old apartment on Sarasate Street For keeping me company I have4 a turtle, two canaries and a cat In order to let mom rest I do the shopping very often and the cooking in the kitchen I clean up, I wash, I wipe occasionally I also do stitching on the sewing machine Work doesn't scare me I'm a little of a decorator a little of a stylist but my real job is at night. that I practice cross dressed: I'm an artist I have very special number that ends completely naked after a strip-tease and in the hall, I see that the guys can't believe their eyes. I am a man, oh! (Here we playing with the french word- Homme however in this context we just say "HOM" which imply "HOMO" the last O is silent in public) As they say About three o'clock in the morning we'll go out to eat with friends of all sexes in some smoking bar And there we'll give in to heart's joy and without complexes unravel the truths about the people who lapidate them on the nose But we're doing it with humour dressing it with wordplays full of acid Upon meeting stragglers who walk and wave (womanlike)39 to entertain their tables imitating what they think we are and they cover themselves up, the poor fools It's ridiculous to gesture and speak loudly to play the divas, the tenors it's stupid Me the mocks, the gibes leave me cold because it's true I am a man, oh! As they say The time the new day is born I go back to find again my lot of solitude I take off my eyelashes and my wig like a poor miserable clown in lassitude I lie down but I don't sleep I think of my loves without joy so ridiculous of this boy beautiful like a god who without doing anything has set the fire in my memory My mouth will never dare tell him my sweet secret64 my tender drama because the object of my torments passes most of his time in bed with women None has really the right to blame me, to judge me and I specified that this is very well the nature that is solely responsible that I am a man, oh! As they say lyricstranslate.com/en/comme-ils-disent-they-say.html

I was just thinking "a home movie in one song" when you said it. You're so right : great lyrics. This character he personalizes, at this time when he wrote this song, it is unbelievable. So brave, so clever, so sensitive !

Je suis un homme (in french) = I'm a man. Je suis un homme Oh = I'm a man Oh Je suis un homo = I'm an homosexual great song. I presume that he must had a lot of courage to song this song in 1972. I mean he was very famous, he was not afraid to put his carrer "in danger" for that. Now you must listen la mama of Charles

Although Charles Aznavour is more known as a singer, at first he wanted to become a comedian… and indeed he was. No wonder he was living his songs. Yves Montand was a bit like that too… but this latter is more known as a comedian.

This song is about the hard life of a "gay man", Homo" Homosexual "as they say". Incredible performance by Aznavour, incredible song for the 70's in France! What a man 👏👏❤️❤️❤️ the English version is "What makes a man a man". Marc Almond makes a cover of this song, like Liza Minnelli. Liza Minnelli is flawless. 👏
