Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another PATREON request with The Dream Academy and their song "Life in A Northern Town." This one got me good! Surprised indeed, oboe, strings, deep drums, and african-esque chants. It's 1985 and no-wonder this was a hit! See my react now!

This song came out during my first year at a UK high school which was indeed in a very gray northern town. I remember taking the public bus each day and playing this on my off brand Walkman (we were poor). So relatable.

Still worried about that cat in Coronation Street….someone needs to get her down. If you’re not in a Northern English town, that will make no sense to you.

@@slconstableI'm an Australian and started watching Coronation Street in the early 1970s in Australia in B&W and I get the cat reference! Surprised Albert Tatlock or Ena Sharples didn't peg stones at it!!

I looked up that instrument once. It's called a cor anglais. It's a type of oboe. These guys have some great songs to check out. Two I would definitely recommend are The Love Parade and The Edge of Forever.

When you live in a town that has seen better days or once suffered from urban decay, you can definitely feel with this song. It is calming, relaxing, and oh so beautiful. Recommend it for anyone's playlist

I gotta say, for as unimaginative as this video is, it has been extremely illuminating. I remember this track from when it came out, we would listen to the radio in my dorm room when I was at a military private school in Grade 10. This is one of the songs that stands out for me, there were quite a few great new songs at that time (West End Girls also comes to mind) but seeing this video helps me appreciate the work that went into the arrangement in a song I really haven't listened to since that time. What a trip!

The wind instrument is a Cor Anglais or English Horn. It’s basically an alto oboe; it is a bit bigger than a normal oboe and so has a lower range giving it a warmer, mellow sound. Very commonly used in orchestral music. One of my favourite bits is after the words ‘John F Kennedy’, it plays the start of a military bugle call which is quite a poignant touch. Agree with you on how interesting the arrangement is. The timpani really add so much here, as well as the little tambourine flourishes in the chorus.

This song is an homage to the extraordinary musician/singer/songwriter Nick Drake who died in the early 70s while in his mid twenties. I'm glad you extracted that info too. Context matters Beautiful song. The same year I graduated HS and started university. Good job, young Dereck! Love your reactions. 85 was a very good year.

Love this song! I graduated from high school in 1985 and it was a magical year and magical time. I think that’s an oboe and not a clarinet. Maybe. Great song and great reaction! I had not heard the extended version or live version of this so this was a treat.

Another one of my favourite band from the 80's... so totally underrated... it's an oboe btw :) There are several versions of this video, also the refrain (Hey ma ma ma) had been sampled to death by various dance/djs groups recently like Dario G, Tritonal etc. check those out too - not bad for a dance number... but the group has many other great music you should check out. This song just always put me in such a good relaxed mood. love it that you checked this out!

This is not the original video, that lift you mention is called crescendo. Soft to loud decrescendo is the opposite in the real video she plays an obo I think. Thus album is amazing. The idea of the vocal African vocals is from Paul Simon he helped in the song and David Gilmore

👏👏👏 BEAUTIFUL !!! I LOVE THAT !!! 😍 🥰 THANK 'S DEAR DERECK !!! ✌

I realise it's the same sounds we usually hear from a synth- only here we actually hear the "real" instruments. I'm old enough to have this song (radio edit, thank God) on an old mix tape where all songs were recorded from the radio. The only extended version I prefer over the original is Heaven 17's And That's No Lie. Pure elegance.

I just started the video and I'm sure that you'll look it up afterwards, but I gotta tell it right away: this one (like the rest of their album) was produced by David Gilmour from Pink Floyd. Plus there are some huge influences by The Mamas & The Papas in this song. If you know you know.
