I agree but for that one - you need to do the entire thing from the studio album. Although they play some of it live, they never (almost never?) do the whole thing live and you need to hear the whole thing. After that, if you want to check out some live version(s), have at it.

The new remaster sounds better than the original and yes it’s a wonderful piece and the lyrics are some of Hunters best. It’s about 17 minutes long but no big guitar solo is jamming it’s like a symphony

The Grateful Dead played 2,350 shows during their career, and they had well over 500 songs in their repertoire. When they walked on stage they had no idea what would get played, the songs they played either flowed one from the other naturally or they got called, but at any given show nobody had any idea what would happen, including the band. Of those 2,350 shows well over 2,200 shows were recorded and can be found on archive.org

At that moment bout half way through when you said "oh Wow" that feeling of joy times 1000 is exactly what it was like at a show. At my first show the entire audience all sighed deeply, spontaneously, together as if on cue. That memory still gives me goosebumps to this day 33yrs later. As we've all said, their musical catalog covers so much ground it's absurd. You always know it's the Dead though. BTW, here's an amusing story another local Dead Head told me. They had a habit of doing "Playing in the Band" in the first set but instead of doing the last chorus they'd transition to a different song. Then, near the end of the concert they'd play the last chorus of "Playing in the Band". Well, my friend saw them at all their New England appearances on one of their tours. As the concert, in Vermont, IIRC, came to a close they played the last chorus of Playing in the Band. My friend suddenly thought "Wait, what? they didn't play the beginning of the song tonight. Then it dawned on him, they played the beginning of the song the previous night in Boston then finished it the next night in another city. Just a little "gotcha" for the die hard fans.

Yes. Franklin's Tower is Ben Franklin's tower and the bell that "you can ring from night to day, ring like fire when you lose your way" is the Liberty Bell. The Dead write Americana. Many of their lyrics are strongly rooted in american history and tradition. Trying to uphold the brighter side of the tradition with songs like this and Liberty. If you like the proggy side of the Dead, you definitely want to check out Terrapin Station, and Lazy Lightning/Supplication. Lazy Lightning from every technical level is easily the most musically advanced and difficult song the band ever wrote. The only performed it live for a few years because playing it is such a difficult undertaking.

The Dead would often put multiple songs together, some played together for years (China/Rider) and others that would be interchanged (after a couple of years) ... but, in essence, listening to the Dead makes you smile

Those three were basically always played together, but before they dusted that trio off in '89 after a four-year absence, we would get Feel Like A Stranger > Franklin's Tower in the first set quite often. That was Bill Graham introducing the band. This show was unique, the Dead only played four shows in '75. This show was basically impossible for mere mortals to get into. Invite only concert for industry types to the Great American Music Hall that holds less than 500. It was the album release party for Blues for Allah. I've been many times to GAMH to see other bands. Seeing the dead there would have been crazy. Tiny stage. Check out the ornate interior on google images. It used to be a bordello.

"Slipknot!" is a great example of how well this band could lock in with one another. Check out "King Solomon's Marbles" from this same show. It's a super-tricky 7-beat tune but since this was the album-release gig, they had it down TIGHT. The "China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider" suites from 1972-1974 are also all one of these extremely-tight locked-in grooves. Live Dead is the truth.

Yes..since the Dead allowed people to tape their shows, people collected shows, combos of 2 songs played together, and 3 together, like this one. Because they combined them differently and beautifully, each time... each entity becomes a collectors item in its own right. Collecting shows and song combos I believe still goes on... thus the show dates all the time.

They were the ultimate and one of the first of what I would call a "Jam" Band. That is to say, they never played a song the same way twice. A great deal of improvisation within the form of each song. On stage, they would take visual and audio cues from one another during the performance.

The 3 songs are considered 1 suite because that's how they always played it live and on the album. Rare for them to play one without the others.although Franklin's tower was played alone alot during some years. Kudos for you for being open to this. took me until i was 30, and the proper exposure (and the proper listening 'enhancements' ;O) to get it). i wish i had gotten it at a younger age but then i'd have probably disappeared from society and followed them around the country. there is NOTHING like a grateful dead show. you got a taste here of how they can take the music places. ...this just gets a tad 'out there'....the go much much further. They are so different....their music can be simplistic and complex at the same time if that makes any sense. there is always A LOT going on within a simple chord progression. i always said i'd love to see someone put sheet music together from one of their live performances...like Dark Star. not that i could read it...but...it'd probably look insane... great reaction. keep it up., oh...as far as progressive...probably the most progressive is Terrapin Station....and altho i'm more a fan of the live stuff, that one you might want to check out the studio version as they don't do the entire thing live. it's incredible. also.....for serious jazzy feel....check out the Eyes Of The World from the album 'without a net'. branford marsalis sits in and it is CRAZY.....i was at that show. mind BLOWn

1975 was their “year off” when they only did a handful of shows, and the time away from the road clearly did them some good. They shelved the amazing but unwieldy Wall of Sound and came out with a new, smaller Alembic PA that tightened their sound, and they took off fully into prog rock with Blues For Allah. This show was that album’s live debut. Another amazing track from the same disc is the instrumental King Solomon’s Marbles- a prog rock masterpiece completely in 7/4 time. Tight as a drum! (NOT something often said about The Dead) Also, The Music Never Stopped is another Great American Music Hall stand-out. PS- the “roll away the dew” melody was partly inspired by Lou Reed’s Walk on the Wild Side.

Thank you very much for doing this triplet of songs. The Deadheads will be so pleased, they will follow your channel for thirty years. The follow up Album is Terrapin Station, the title track is even more proggy but it’s an entire album side. If you like help on the way you’ll probably like Terrapin. The recent remastered version is best. They never played this song suite in its entirety live, much to the chagrin of Mr Hunter. Imho the Garcia Hunter ballads are where the Dead really set themselves apart. This performance you reacted to is like halfway between studio and live stylistically. Love all the comments about this piece. The Good and the Bad. I wish you had more time to delve into lyrics more. Great reaction and analysis.

I like your immediate insight into their lyrics. The Grateful Dead said that their lyrics were written in such a way that we can apply whatever meaning we want to most of them. Of course there are many verses and/or choruses that have objective meanings too but for the most part they left them open to personal interpretation. If you ever get a moment would you please do the Grateful Dead's studio version of "Terrapin Station"? It's a real gem.

These tracks are the ones that open the album Blues for Allah, quite possible their proggiest, with a strong jazz influence, together with Wake of the Flood and the song Terrapin Station. Although I love their sound live, Blues for Allah is an amazing studio record and worth checking some of that stuff on studio version. Great insight as always, Daniel!

Franklins BBQ is an icon in Austin. There’s always long lines. I recommend the mesquite smoked beef brisket. Go early, they always run out. Ps, I’m not implying this song is about this...I have no clue about Franklins tower...maybe a local hangout where there’s impromptu Drum circles, Tie dye demos, hash brownies for sale, macrame, dream catchers....I m picturing it in upstate New York...or Vermont.

Pretty sure the bell referred to is the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, which was in the State House. It used to hang in a bell tower and was rung tio summon people to public meetings. The old 50 cent coins had Ben Franklin on one side and the Liberty Bell on the other, but I don’t think there was a tower called Franklin’s Tower.

Some things just don’t come across on recordings. The Dead were experts at playing the space they were in. If you saw them once youd probably go see them again and bring a friend and so on. That’s how they built their following.

Hartlor Tayley I was on tour from 83-90. I saw a maybe a dozen shows after Brent died and the band wasn’t ever on. I never saw a good show after the summer of 1990.

Thomas Sirman yeah I only saw a handful of shows after 85. I know what you mean. Jerry was burned out on Grateful Dead. The Garcia band was more his cup of tea at that point. Honestly I think Garcia was a freakin genius and deserved band that was more on his level than the dead often were.

Good Choice!! Miles Davis (I hope you know who he was) said of the Dead "They're a jazz band who plays rock". This brings that to life. The Great American Music Hall was a small room. This show was their first since they " broke up" some 14 months before. This was also the first time they had played these songs publicly. Your observation about them playing one song into the next and making it work is exactly what they did. You'll recall Sugar Magnolia ended with the "Sunshine Daydream" part. I saw a couple of shows that they started with Sugar Magnolia and didn't play the end part but instead went into another song and another song and so on. Anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours later, they would spontaneously start Sunshine Daydream out of nowhere and it all worked. If you're interested in going down this rabbit hole even further, I recommend a website, www.archive.org. It has all sorts of recordings there. They have a Grateful Dead section with literally hundreds of shows. The Dead always allowed the audience to tape their shows to the point that their shows always had a tapper's section. As a result, there are thousands of cassette tapes that are traded. This community is awesome!

It’d be kind of appropriate to follow up this terrific reaction with a live Phish reaction. There are certainly similarities in that both bands are improvisational/prog/jam/dancey, but they don’t really sound the same. No coincidence that they share many of the same fans though. Check out “Chalkdust Torture” or “Down with Disease” for a rocking groove, “Tube” for a funk number with a mighty blues change, “Stash” for fun prog, “Run Like an Antelope” for absolute improv insanity. Edit - “Divided Sky” is a beautiful tune that showcases the band’s more prog-composition chops.

You're just getting started on your journey, and I envy you, in a way. So much to look forward to! I started with The Dead at about 14 yrs old and have just turned 65 and probably listen now more than ever! Since you're a lyricist, you will enjoy your trip with Robert Hunter (wrote primarily with Garcia) and John Perry Barlow's (wrote primarily with Weir) lyrics. Great stuff! I heard you mention, "I don't know why they're all together (these three songs) like this". You will also find that certain song "groupings/pairings" are prevalent in their live shows. Deadheads have named a lot of them "Help/Slip/Tower" or "China/Rider" (China Cat Sunflower>I Know You Rider) or "Scarlet/Fire" (Scarlet Begonias>Fire on the Mountain), there are more, but you get the picture! One of the truly great things about The Dead is that they had the sense to record damn near everything they ever did! I'm still discovering "favorite" versions of songs I may have heard a hundred (or more) times before! I'm going to drop you this tasty "China>Rider" here, from Winterland 1974. That's a stellar version! The sound is so great on those Betty Boards, from 77 especially! I made two shows that year, Tuscaloosa AL, and Atlanta GA. A very strong year for The Dead, in my book!

Tom Mathews Houston 1972 version of Playin in the band. Weir sings a verse or two then it’s straight into wild freeform improv for 25 minutes, and it goes places. . I think the freeform jamming is one of the most charming and unique qualities that the band had but I don’t know how this sounds to people in 2020. I mean we request the accessible songs and don’t bother requesting the more out there type of stuff, funny thing is it was the really out there jams and songs that got me into them in the first place. They have a lot of songs that are part of a medley or are meant to go together. Like, for dead heads, this is called help/slip/frank and as you saw one goes into another ☺️ Like chinacat/rider, scarlet/fire, sailor/circumstance, estimated/eyes, st stephen/the eleven n many more 😉 And, the skull is called a Steal your face or sometimes a stealie. It’s a line in a song called he’s gone. Steal your face right off your head. It’s so famous, there’s a venue in Palo Alto called shoreline amphitheater that an aerial photo of the venue is a steal your face. It was literally made for the dead ☺️

Try and get the entire intro by Bill Graham. As he introduces each member, they begin playing their corresponding instrument. Great intro --> great energy. Didn't see my first show till 12/79 but definitely got on here. Jazzy, yes. The bass bombs are juicy. Loving the drums chase each other. They are focused and on point.
