One was / is the loneliest number when one sees/feels just how hard things were / are. Then as well as now. Yes, they did speak for us is many ways indeed. But not just to us or only us if you get my drift.

I first saw the musical Hair in Sydney, Australia in April of 1970. It blew my mind. I saw it again in San Francisco and in Seattle in the years that followed.

Three Dog Night's "Pieces of April" was my heart's love & my song - insightful as we broke up after over 3 years. 😢 We recently reconnected over Facebook and he even apologized for leaving me the way he did. It's been amazing! BUT... He's been married & divorced 3 times! So... Either I lucked out or HE married the wrong women. 😉

A very good Broadway musical and the movie adaptation was really good. This song comes in and is a powerful part in the movie. The play is about the hippies and the Vietnam War and the draft. The Jesus Christ Superstar movie was done in the early 70s and the cast were "hippies". It has fantastic hit songs on it too.

In the musical "Hair," a woman sings this song. She likes a guy who cares about "causes" & "the masses" but he's cold to her when she's been there for him. In the lyrics: "How can people have no feelings How can they ignore their friends Easy to be proud Easy to say no Especially people who care about strangers Who say care about evil and social injustice Do you only care about the bleeding crowd How about a needy friend I need a friend"

I think you kind of missed the point of the song, though, which was a personal, one-on-one appeal for love. He asks how someone who cares about strangers and social injustice could be so cold to the person standing right in front of them. It's one of those moments that, by briefly seeming to depart from the main theme, make great musicals great.
