First Time Reaction to BABYMETAL - "Gimme Chocolate!!" (ギミチョコ)

Good reaction, thanks and welcome to BABYMETAL. "Gimme Chocolate" is "just" a fun song about the girls wanting to eat chocolate but being a little worried worried about their weight. But, yeah those instrumentals are very, very metal and the juxtaposition with the cute vocals, lyrics and choreo was totally the point of the song and the reason why this music video went viral back in 2014. Helping them a lot tbh. It's their most "popular" song but probably not their best one. But that doesn't stop it from being a blast when they play it live. This music video has the studio version of the audio over the visuals from the concert Legend 1997 held in December 2013 to celebrate Su-metal's (the lead singer) 16th birthday. It was the song's live premiere. BABYMETAL are the three ladies. They are backed by a live band, the Kami Band, formed by session musicians, the best you can find. Unfortunately, they are not in this video: the guys in skeleton costumes (called "babybones") were there pretending to play the instruments while the music was in a backing track (Su-metal always sing live). It was like this because they couldn't afford and actual band at first. The real Kami Band was introduced progressively since October 2012 and they replaced the "babybones" for good since March 2014. They are: - Suzuka Nakamoto as SU-METAL (lead singer). - Moa Kikuchi as MOAMETAL (backing vocals and dance). - Momoko Okazaki as MOMOMETAL (backing vocals and dance). Official member since April 2023 after being one of their three backup dancers (Avengers) since 2019. Former member: - Yui Mizuno as YUIMETAL (backing vocals and dance). She left officially in 2018 after not performing since October 2017 due to health issues. With Suzuka and Moa she was one of the three OG members since their origins in 2010. She is in this video. They are very diverse musically since they like to mix any music genre with metal. @@2kDanger Happy to help! Yeah... you have no idea how cool (or crazy) that concert was... we will get there, hehe... Actually, at first they didn't even have "babybones". Their story is a bit peculiar. They started very young within other project (Sakura Gakuin, an all-girl school-themed J-pop idol group) with no extra budged. So, they had to do their own gigs in some holes in the wall and even shopping malls (literally) until they split and formed an independent entity.

Thanks for the fun reaction, love seeing new people discover Babymetal! This video was the first time the group went viral outside of Japan, it in part led to them getting bumped to the main stage of a 55k+ metal festival, that led to selling out large venues in the UK/US as well as Japan, and they took off. It's been over a decade, and they just keep getting better - nothing like them.

'Gimme Chocolate' is one of their fun songs and it was this official video for this song that went viral early in 2014 and got them a lot of attention before they started touring the world. BABYMETAL are like nothing you will have seen or heard before. They brought a fusion of great metal instrumentals coupled with JPop hooks, melodies and aesthetics to create their very own sub-genre (Kawaii Metal - kawaii meaning cute or adorable) and they have continued to develop and evolve from those beginnings. They don't limit themselves to any one main style or genre and you won't be able to pigeonhole or put them in any one box like you can with virtually every other band in the world. They are one of a kind and they invented their own genre and style that nobody has been able to copy successfully (some have tried, none came close) including bringing choreographed dancing to metal (but not as you might know it from pop acts where it is nearly always used just to fill the stage or give you almost naked girls (and boys) to look at to take your mind off often bland music). BABYMETAL's choreo helps with interpreting the song - a lyric or the meaning etc, but it is designed to involve and lead the crowd, to give them their cues when to jump, shout, pump their fists, chant and so on. BABYMETAL are complete masters of crowd control and crowd involvement. They have nearly 70 songs now, every one of them is different from the last. They have songs in virtually every metal genre but will mix in other musical styles and genres with the metal, often when you least expect it. Some songs lean towards their pop roots others are just good hard metal and they do everything in between - so if you don't like one song no problem - try another, the chances are you'll love it. This Summer they finished their sixth world tour and just recently finished a tour of North and South America. Babymetal are unlike any other band you'll ever see and have been blowing minds since 2010. And yeah they were really young.

@@2kDanger One of Babymetal's super powers is just making a viewer/listener feel better and happier. GC has such a high WTF factor that in many ways it was a perfect track to get attention in the west. The downside is YT's algorithm generally direct "new" viewers to it by sheer dint of the views (over 200,000,000). A lot of people think that well that's Babymetal when there is just soooooo much more. I'll make a recommendation for you. Many members of The One will say that this song isn't among BABYMETAL's best - I beg to differ. Although BABYMETAL does have many songs that are better, this song defines what BABYMETAL is: heavy metal pleasantly mixed with J-pop without missing a beat - kawaii metal at its best, and one of the best videos of the "Yui Era" (more on that later). The “I was not expecting this” and “WTF did I just watch” are the typical reactions among first-time BABYMETAL viewers. A lot of their songs tend to get that - even after you watch a few of them! Anyway . . . . You’ve opened a can of worms! BABYMETAL has an extensive history (and lore) which I won’t get into but a quick synopsis: they’ve been around since 2010, and started when their lead singer - known as Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) - was about twelve, and the two "cheerleaders" (officially "scream and dance" (backing vocals)) - Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) and Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) - were both around eleven. Unfortunately, Yui left the group in 2018 because of health concerns, and early in 2023 Momoko Okazaki (Momometal) was named a member of the group. They do not play instruments but are backed by the Kami Band - session musicians who are among the best that Japan (and the U.S.) has to offer. BABYMETAL started a brand new genre of music ("kawaii metal" - cute metal), and they cannot be pigeon-holed - they are almost always thinking and moving outside box; they made listening to metal FUN!
