The explanation I have read is that singing and speaking are controlled by different parts of the brain. You also need to remember that this video is older than MR, so Ozzy was far more coherent.

I’m a child of the 80’s, MTV was the best thing in my life in my teen years. Looking back, the pop art of the 80s was walking away from the psychedelic and magical themes and aesthetics of the 70’s, reflecting the life experience in the big cities, and going with the industrial flow of the times, but they kept a sense of fantasy, and adventure. It was dramática and exciting, and surreal. Then a gentleman called Kurt Cobain came along and the drab, decadent and depressed mood of the 90s changed it all. It’s fascinating how art imitates life and vice versa.

Back then, when this came out, this was considered epic. Even though we would watch the video, we mostly just listened to and felt the music. The video style was also very common in that era with the simplicity and lighting effects. You'll see it in other videos from back then as well. It should also be noted that they came up with this song "by accident" during a night at the studio after some heavy drinking and drugs. Such a legendary "accident" in music history.

I still have Lita Ford’s CDs that I bought brand new in high school when this first came out. I feel like she was coming out of the shadow of Joan Jett when they were in the Runaways together. Her pairing with Ozzy on this song really was the push she needed. Not only did guys my age think she was super hot, but this song solidified her as a bonafide metal rocker chic!

We loved the videos. MTV was EVERYTHING. They'd hype the release of new videos for like weeks beforehand. Usually the videos came after the song was somewhat of a radio hit already--but sometimes artists would debut new songs with the MTV video. New music videos by your favorite singers/bands were a big deal. Remember this was all new so it didn't seem nearly as cheesy--since we literally had no point of reference to compare to. There was no Internet or KZbin. Sometimes you never even knew what a musician/band looked like until the video came on MTV.

As for how the videos appeared, they were filmed for standard definition TV. So, the backdrops had to be over the top and makeup was applied with a concrete float. I suspect that’s one of the reasons it looks extra cheesy in HD. 😂

If someone asks you what the 80s were like, you can just show them this video. It's perfect. Re how we reacted: 80s media has something that is badly missing from today's media, and that is sincerity. We empathized with these emotions because they were real, and the artists put themselves at risk expressing them. Today it's all post-ironic clever Joss Whedon-quips and nothing is ever sincere. At least that's how I feel.

My reaction, when I first saw this video was holy s****. Ozzy and Lita wrote this song over the course of one night. Lita would later state that Ozzy wrote almost all the lyrics and seemed very upset while writing. Lita went on to say, Sharon (Ozzy’s Wife and Lita’s Manager) was very angry with them for having spent a night together even though they were just working on the song. For a long time, Lita really didn’t understand what was going on. This song is an apology from Ozzy to Sharon, for cheating on her.

I remember when ripped jeans got popular in the 80s. A girl I went to school with was walking through a mall wearing a pair. She had ripped herself when a woman walked up to her and offered to buy those jeans off of her. I also remember, parents freaking out because they spent good money on a pair of brand new jeans only to have their kid take scissors or a razor blade to them in order to make those jeans fashionable.
