All the characters are descended and evolved from Earth humans. Different groups of humans have formed into specialty schools: the Bene Gesserit sisterhood have mastered physical and physiological manipulation, the Mentats (the character Thufir Hawat who rolled his eyes back doing the calculations) have honed mental skills and act as human computers (in this universe, artificial intelligence is banned after machines had overthrown human rule and enslaved humans, only to be conquered by a human uprising), and Duncan trained with the Ginaz, who are the sword masters of the universe. Duncan himself is reputed to be one of the finest sword fighters in the Imperium, which is why the Harkonnes soldiers backed off. Because of the shields, fast projectile weapons are somewhat useless, which is why hand-to-hand combat is still a major form of fighting.

I have never seen such a comprehensive analysis of a movie before. You two are amazing. Dune is multilayered and very dense storytelling. You two picked up on all the levels that Frank Herbert, the author of the book, laid out. He used the term "Wheels within wheels....Plans within plans"...... to describe what the major players were doing in his story. I can't wait until you react to Dune, part 2. It is the second part of the first book. Picks up exactly from the end of the first part. Thank you for such an interesting and enjoyable experience.

The emperor sent House Atreides to Arrakis to die, so it's only fitting that their arrival should be announced with the sound of bagpipes. It's essentially an epic funeral procession.
@mentallygonereacts2 ай бұрын
Didn't even think about the funeral angle on the bagpipes, my initial assumption was that it had to do with some sort of ancestral tradition for the house, my mind went to ancient Celtic rites for whatever reason. Announcing their death upon arrival is truly epic and makes that scene so much better lol - Caley
@andrewrankin19212 ай бұрын
The origin of bagpipes is Roman, played going into battle
A lot of the human cultures harken back to the old civilizations on Earth, where the humans of the Dune universe originated from. Atreides is a Greek-derived name, Harkonnen a Finnish-derived name. Dr. Yueh and Paul speak Mandarin. The bagpipes alludes to the Scottish influence, and Paul even makes reference to his grandfather engaging in Spanish bullfighting, which is why there is so much bull symbolism in the Atreides manor. In part 2, there is an arena scene that is modeled after a Spanish bullfight, with both matador and picadors. And the whole story is an allegory over the clash of civilizations, colonialism, and resource extraction in the Middle East. A geopolitical tale on an epic, futuristic scale.

They didn't really get into it but the Spacing Guild has a monopoly on interstellar travel. If not for them the Great Houses would have no contact with each other. Their ships act very much like an ocean-going ferry where you load it with other ships and then it moves them. The navigators of the guild themselves have used spice so heavily that it has actually mutated their physical appearance and brains. The spice is used to allow the navigators to plot safe passages through the stars (as others have mentioned there are no advanced computers in this world), not perform the actual act of folding space which is a technological act. When the Emperor's Harald came to Caladan to get Lehto to sign the documents that transferred stewardship to house Atreides, you could actually see several members of the Spacing Guild among them. They were the ones who had on those helmets that were kind of cinnamon-coloured. They were that colour because the helmets were flooded with spice gas meaning the guild members were constantly breathing it in. The level of mutation is measured in stages with stage 4 navigators being the ones who fold space. The guild is fiercely protective over their monopoly so no one has ever seen a stage 4 navigator.

You help me just by being openly you and letting your vulnerability be seen. You also help me realise that I can let myself be seen.

The biggest reactors I've seen aren't dropping wisdom or intellectual analysis all the time, so I wish she didn't feel such pressure to do more, or say the right thing, or be anything other than her natural self. Her personality is just as charming to me as reactors like Popcorn in Bed, and her comments show that she's perceptive about the characters and plot, which is all I can ask. I know 1 random internet comment isn't much, but I hope if she sees this it might help quiet her inner self-critic at least a little. She's already enough! Also: avocado.

The cousin line, at least in the book, does almost certainly reference a Napoleonic address that on a fundamental level just means "we both have royal blood". Leto is, however, related to the Baron, so technically they are cousins, just very distant ones. Through the House Corrino.

Minor Spoiler Alert . He is no Messiah, Messiahs are archetypically peaceful, he is a fighter hero, distorting the myth the bene gesserit primed in arrakis to his own advantage, the sisterhood did not count on the individuality and personal choices of the Kwisatz Haderach, but above all that, was the Lady Jessica's Disobedience on Birthing a man, teaching him Bene Gesserit skills, Duncan training him in swordfighting, gourney in tactics and - in the book - Thufir teaching him Mentat Skills. He is basically a super human with the most "biopotential" of all humans that the schools of humankind develops after the butlerian jihad.

The spice is not used to fold space. The great engines of the Spacing Guild's spaceships are what fold spacetime. However, navigating from one star to another is very dangerous because you don't want to emerge on the other side in the middle of a planet or asteroid or star. The spice allows the evolved and spice mutated brains of the Spacing Guild Navigators to predict the likelihoods of dangers for different fine adjustments of the folding process that the engines engage in and to select a safe adjustment so that they arrive in a safe location close to their desired location.
@sammalla5238Ай бұрын
*Some additional non-spoiler lore* : * The story is pretty much set on our timeline roughly 24,000 years into the future. All the characters you see are humans, slightly evolved due to various significant events before Paul's saga. House Atriedes can actually trace their ancestry back to House Atreus of ancient Greek civilization & later Rome as well * Earth is referred to as Terra and has been sadly lost to history after it was struck by a planetoid meteor and designated as a National park millennia after humans left it * Roughly 10,000 years before Paul's story, there was a holy war against the "Thinking Machines" or basically AI, aftermath of which resulted in the complete explusion & abandonment of any artificial intelligent technology, machinery, weapons or equipment across the known universe. It was referred to as the "Butlerian Jihad" and paved the way for how human species would evolve & adapt without the luxury of thinking machines * The Bene Gesserit sisterhood, Space Navigators/Guild & Mentats (human computers) were all developed and established in and around this turbulent time period resulting in the formation of the current feudal imperium with an Emperor and various houses with Dukes, Barons & Counts. Various historical accounts were lost, Religious & conservative beliefs started to become the norm. This is the reason why even though the story is set way ahead into the future, it still feels ancient * Arrakis used to be an abundant water planet until some unknown group before all the AI conflict period decided to infest it with Sand Trouts, which later evolved into the Giant Sand worms, the main source of spice so needless to say they are very vital to the ecology of Arrakis. Fremen only arrived on Arrakis only 3500/4000 years before Paul. They are descendants of the Zen-Sunni people, who were these nomadic tribes that constantly traveled to & from various planets until they were settled into Arrakis

One thing about the Bene Gesserit and their plans...the Kwisath Haderach was always supposed to be a male, not a female. The problem with Paul is that he wasnt supposed to be born, Jessica was to have a girl and that girl would've been married to a Harkonnen (the nephew of the Baron, you will meet him in the 2nd part) and their son was supposed to be the One. But Jessica defied her sisters and thought she will give birth to the One and thats how Paul is born, one generation earlier. Keep this detail in mind, while the story unfolds in the next movies.

12:30, Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa) has been with House Atreides since he was a boy working the bull stables. When Duke Leto's father Paulus perished in a bullfight, it was testimony from young Duncan that uncovered a conspiracy orchestrated by Leto's own mother. So in a matter of days, Leto (who was about Paul's age now) lost both his parents. Leto took Duncan under his wing as a protege and surrogate younger brother. In time, Duncan joined the Atreides army and was sent to the Ginaz Swordmaster school. He and Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin) are sword masters of House Atreides. Their fighting prowess has made them legends in their own lifetime at swordsmanship. That's why when Duncan later took out those 3 Harkonnen troopers the rest of them backed off. For all intents and purposes, Duncan is like an uncle or older brother to Paul. So him meeting his end to buy time for his Duke to escape would be considered an honorable death.

I appreciated the whole discussion, i feel like the main theme of ecology and balance with nature as the deepest form of inner growth to the point it becomes a religion is easily the most fascinating aspect of Dune. I respect immensely the way the author spelled out the danger of our perception of messianic figures, and how easily we harm ourselves on the way through our own metaforical inner desert... really impressive. The way we as humans were shaped by our own ecological niche, evolved in it and then spread into a wider range of habitats, changed ourselves to adapt, turn around and tried to shape the very nature that surrounds us in ways that in turn changes us as well. The ancient fremen dream of turning the desert into a jungle where even Avocado can grow 😉 and the tragedy of the dream becoming real.....

I enjoyed your reaction. Very well done and thought out. Not many people (even those who have read this novel), nor any of the reaction video comments I've watched explained that Paul was only 15 years old when the story begins. He also had no childhood playmates or friendships. What does this isolation from his peers do to a child? He only had intense trainers, who became his friends by abstentia, thus filling that void: Duncan (sword master), Gurney (weapons master), Thufir (Mentat -- complex calculations leading to reliable probabilities), Yueh (biology and ecology). And, of course, his mother, a Bene Gesserit "witch" who also trained him in up close battle techniques, calming techniques, muscle control that gave her quickness (note that Jessica outran Paul easily and didn't stumble when running from the worm), as well as the use of the "voice" (which requires studying the opponent, often on the fly, in order to use it with the most effect). In other words, Paul was a very complex teenager, and will become an even more complex adult. While most think Paul lived a life of privilege, there was a steep cost to that privilege. This may help explain a few things in Part 2.

Apologies for the late comment since no one seemed to have mentioned it but the reason why you guys like the music so much is because it was composed by Hans Zimmer. He did not one, not two but THREE soundtracks for the movie. What I liked is that there are different motifs/cues for each house, planet and characters and what they represent. For example, for the Bene Gesserit, their motif is surrounded by creepy sounding whispering/chanting female vocals and very cult/witch-like melodies. House Atreides contains proudly and triumphant bagpipes and a beautiful female vocal hymn. House Harkonnen has their infamous war horns and metallic gear clicking sounds. Lastly, the Sardaukar are defined by ominous throat singing. Paul’s theme has those epic female cries/shouts. The music is one of the reasons why Dune has worked as well as it has. Hans Zimmer and the rest of the crew did a fantastic job to bring it to life! It’s almost a perfect balance between what is considered music and what is considered to be sound design.

Not sure if anybody has mentioned yet or not but the scene that shows the date, 10,191AG, is actually closer to 20,191 AG. The "AG" stands for After Guild. @@mentallygonereacts You guys are at least, seemingly wearing proper headphones, unlike others who'll watch with one earbud in (why even bother?). The sound design for both films is absolutely incredible. When these films are re-released in IMAX, run, don't walk, to the cinema. I saw both films in both IMAX and regular cinema, and there's no comparison. IMAX will blow you away. You will actually feel the audio.

I love the first part of Dune and I like to re-watch it since I saw the second part. Yes the first film has a slow pace but I find that it is necessary to better understand this world and I find that it sets the table for the second. And I didn't think I would like it as much but nothing surprising because I love Denis Villeneuve's work. And never stop making long reactions because I love it and it's really interesting to hear other people's point of view! ❤️

Great watch guys. This is my favorite book and my favorite director. No one could adapt this book. Think Peter Jackson for lord of the rings Also. Everyone is human. They've evolved differently by environment on different planets . Love that you guys picked up on most thing right away. Watch it again and again and you'll keep picking up different nuances 😊

First of all: “Avocado.” Echoes of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA are plentiful and will continue into part 2, where a bit of sarcasm recalls Lawrence being caught sleeping at inopportune times. Paul letting go of the controls of the ornithopter recalls the Arthurian episode when Parzival drops his horse’s reins, symbolically yielding to the will of nature. This is also echoed at the start of DANCES WITH WOLVES. The bull is also a traditional symbol of resurrection because its horns resemble the the young moon on the western horizon as it is monthly reborn (as per Campbell). Following the matador reference in part1, part 2 will present the equivalent of picadors. Part 2 will also feature the chiropractor from hell.

“why isn’t he doing the sandwalk?” because with a hugeass mining vehicle, it was already attracting the worm regardless. “why did they back away so easily?” cause they just watched duncan kill 3 of them and there was only 3 left. they decided they’d rather not die like the others over one soldier lol “why aren’t the worms attacking with all these explosions?” cause they have a mountain range and shield wall that go deep underground protecting the city from the worms.

Spice not only prolongs life, but it is also a psychotropic that the Guild Navigators use to enhance Prescience when they travel between stars and can have a mind-opening effect on those sensitive to it. One of the things that Denis Villeneuve left out (among many) is that Spice is also addictive and actually present as dust in the air being breathed on the planet. The Eyes of Ibad mark the Fremen who are, as a result, addicted to Spice.

The baron was never "resurrected" or healed. He has that thing that makes him levitate so he "flew" to the highest point of the ceiling to not get poisoned, everyone else in the room died.

As a suggestion because idk if you’ll react to it but would you guys ever do a hunger games reaction? I feel like most people who react to Harry Potter go to hunger games after. It’s a good watch if you guys haven’t seen it yet

Did you notice the scene where Paul yells at Jessica in the tent is exactly like an ancient coming of age ritual? His father is dead, he has to become a man, and inevitably (as these things always seem to happen in ancient rituals) that means taking some hallucinogens and tripping out in a tent.

They are scared because Duncan just slaughtered their homies with ease. All characters are human. The town is protected by the shield wall. It's all explained in the movie without the book.

Frank Herbert's son Brian Herbert collaborated with Sci Fi author Kevin J Anderson to finish the Dune Saga. He went off his knowledge of his father's vision, and his notes. The books are very enjoyable, and I recommend them.

It easily became one of my favorite movies already, and now you just got me excited to see what Blade Runner looks like
