This is from a musical called Kristina från Duvemåla (Kristina from Duvemåla) and it's named Du Måste Finnas, which directly translates to "You Have To Exist". Kristina is singing about the pain she's experiencing from having no choice but to flee her home country, but have accepted her life as an immigrant in the US. Just before this song she had a horrible miscarriage and was told by a doctor she can't have any more children or it would kill her. Her life is in ruins, far away from her home. For the first time in her life she's questioning the christian God's existence and the song is a desperate prayer to him. It's a heartbreaking story.

@@Meiiiow No, people didn't starve in Sweden (a couple year i 1860th was the worth thou), but it was high povertry. Kristina came from a farmers familie, not the poorest. But Karl-Oskar her husband wanted to find the luck in Amerika. Many emigrated because 'new religios thoughts' opposit of the Lutheran church. But the biggest problem was, belive it or not, better health (more children survived and people lived longer). The population grove fast so the farmland could not support all for living and the industri couldn't yet eighter. In Amerika both north and south+Australia needed people, so could get land for almost free if you start to farm it.

You must read the backstory of this musical. Its about the huge amount of Swedish people who left Sweden for America during the end of 1800 and the beginning of the 1900 which was tortured by poverty, religious fanatical craziness and stunded growth... The composer is Björn and Benny from ABBA

Check out "Guldet Blev till sand" = The Gold turned into sand.... by Peter Jöback....which tells another deep story about The Swedish people who went to the US as immigrants in the 1900 century. At a time when Sweden was very very poor ...and where it was difficult to survive and many died by hunger .Death were just around the corner everywhere PS:For more of Helen Sjöholm, pls check out a song from another film "As In Heaven" ....The song is called "Gabriellas Song"

This musical is about a Swedish family leaving Sweden to go to America in hopes of a better life. Kristina (Helen's role) sings this song after she just miscarried and gets told by the doctor that she can never again become pregnant or she will die. Her children and her husband is everything to her. She has always been devout and now all of a sudden she feels as if she is losing it all and God is doing nothing about it.

This is a song from a musical made by Björn and Benny from ABBA (they have also made the musicals Chess and Mamma Mia). This is Kristina talking to God after a miscarriage of her seventh child and the doctor have told her that if she attempts to have another child she might die. Kristina feels punished by God and feels like he is also taking her away from her husband since she can’t give him another child. She is tempted to question if God really exists, when he doesn’t hear her prayers. There’s another song in this musical (there are a number of good songs in this musical) is when Kristina’s brother in law, Robert, is coming back from California after he and his friend tried to find gold but were scammed and the friend died on the way back. It is sung by Peter Joback and it’s called “Guldet blev till sand” the gold turned into dust. It’s also a strong, emotional song.

I more or less accidently ate a funny brownie a few years ago - those that makes you travel while lying on your bed - and I had the most erotic vision with a black woman. Two years later I met her and we are now happily married. :-) God works in mysterium ways. Björn Ulvaeus - famous from ABBA- who wrote the lyrics is a declared atheist. The man who wrote the book the song is based on - his name was Vilhelm Moberg - committed suixide. The pain felt in the song is genuine, believe me!

This song is not about her still believing in God, it's about her starting to question God's existence. At least that's the way I hear it. Part of the lyrics go something like "Never before have I spoken it outloud or thought of it, that little word which frightens and plagues me so. That word is 'if'... If all of my prayers were pointless. If you don't exist, then what should I do? Who would comfort me, and then give me forgiveness? Peace of mind/soul, well, who would give me that? Who would comfort me? I'm so small on the globe/earth (she means she's unimportant in the whole scheme of things or something) If you dont exist, who will care for me later? No, you MUST exist..." And so on. To me, this isn't a ringing endorsement of the Christian god.

Lyrics: You expelled me, God, I was ripped away from my homeland. Here I am a refugee and a stranger And I find myself in that fate. But You took my child and You are taking me from my husband. I can no longer see a meaning. What is it that You want? What should I believe? The thought is vertiginous, in front of me an abyss gapes, my whole being is revolting and wants to say no, the question raised and now my soul is trembling before the answer; that You do not exist Though I believed in You. Who would help me to endure life out here? Who would give me the power I have to get? Who would comfort me? I am so insignificant on Earth. If you do not exist, what would I do then? No, You must exist, You must! I live my life through You. Without You I am a splinter on a dark and stormy sea. You must exist, You must! How can You abandon me? I would be nowhere, I would be nothing if You did not exist. Never before have I had it in speech or in thought, that little word which scares and torment me so; the word is 'if', and if I have prayed in vain? If You do not exist what am I supposed to do? Who would feel my regret and the forgive? Peace of mind, yes, who would give me that? Who would greet me after death? If You do not exist who will take care of me later? No, You must exist, You must! I live my life through You. Without You I am a splinter on a dark and stormy sea. You must exist, You must! How can You abandon me? I would be nowhere, I would be nothing if You did not exist. @mikaelathunell28229 ай бұрын
You can read more about the musical and it's plot on the link below :) And as others have already told you, the song is sung from Kristina's perspective. To give a quick and definitely not complete summary, they had a hard time back in Sweden. Due to the lack of money their daughter ate seeds from which she got sick and died. Then they emigrated to the US where lots of things happened too. Over there, she had a miscarriage and she was told she wouldn't survive another pregnancy or miscarriage. From what I've understood, that weakened her husband's love for her. So that's the background to what she means when she said God took her child and her husband. I haven't watched the show myself, so I thought her husband actually left her, but it turn out that he stayed, and that she died in his arms after another miscarriage. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kristina_från_Duvemåla
