This song was written by Mitch..and he was bullied..he struggled a long time..luckily he has come into himself..

He spoke about this on the sing off. They went to the Trevor project as the charity they chose to represent on the show. The Trevor project is for bullied youth and the lgbtq+ community, which Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch are part of. Mitch talked about being bullied about his voice, and Shawn Stockman told him that Mitch has one of the prettiest voices he's ever heard. Mitch slap anyone?

The message to me is not only does he change himself to be popular, it has made him empty and superficial. He "sold his soul" for fleeting popularity. It's deep and powerful message.

I dare anyone to listen to this and tell me they can’t hear and feel the gut-punching bass Matt delivers. Genius! Go Matt. The song as a whole is truly special. The fact that it’s a PTX original affects the way I relate to it. I feel an extreme sense of pride in it; like I made it; like it’s my own baby! Then the lyrics, oh the lyrics: so poignant and relevant in the age we are living in. What more is there to say about Mitch’s vocals, and KO’s beats? Put Scott’s genius and Queen Kirstie on backing vocals and you have a winner. I really will never cry again.

Avi was gone by this time. All the new songs since 2017 are with Matt as base. So it would be the trio of Kirstin, Scott and Mitch and then Kevin on percussion.

One of my favourite songs! I've never seen it live either, so this will be a treat to see how it sounds. What a shame the clip wasn't the whole song - but I hope it is on the set list for your show and then you can tell us about it 😊 the album this is off has a much more 'produced' 'layered' sound. I am curious to see how they come across on stage. (of couse PTX will be amazing!) Would also suggest Anchor (if you haven't already) off the deluxe version of this album). Another magnificent Mitch moment.

All of their originals are so excellent! Mitch of course is gorgeous in this, and Matt’s bass is 🔥! The fact that they can sing and jump around is another skill they have😊. Another favorite original of mine is See Through (audio-only and Mitch central) from 2014.

It’s such a vicious downward spiral, isn’t it…comparing one’s own everyday life to everyone else’s highlight reel, but we have no idea how long someone spent setting up that perfect little short video/photo or what the behind the scenes situations are in their lives. And if we’re the ones with the perfect images…it can get very scary up there on top with no place to go but down. Perfectionism is a very demanding taskmaster.

Forgive us Pentaholics as we expect reactors to learn all about PTX. Who the members are by name and when Matt took over from Avi is part of this. Don’t worry too much about it since we are all here to have fun. However, there will be a test.

@@TouchyReactions We know you are. How long has it been since you discovered Pentatonix, just a few months, isn't it? I was late to the party, too, just found them about 9 months ago. But I'm 70 and don't have a family to take care of, so I have more time to search out these things. And I still get things wrong and get corrected occasionally.

Mitch and Scott are both gay, and both came out of the closet in high school. Scott is big, and he's a baritone, so he didn't have too much problem with gay-bashing. Mitch, on the other hand, had major problems with bullying, "because his voice was too high." Which is a very thin disguise for gay-bashing. And his two best friends, Scott and Kirstie, graduated a year ahead of him and both went off to college, leaving him in Arlington, Texas with the high school bullies, feeling very alone. And unfortunately, Mitch internalized the bullying as actually being about his voice. So at the end of Kirstie's and Scott's freshman year in college they both came home to Arlington to be there for Mitch's graduation and to float Scott's big idea that The Trio (the name they'd come up with for the trio the three of them had formed in high school) should go on _The Sing-Off_ and try to get a recording contract. I won't go into great detail about the formation of Pentatonix here, except to say that they found out they needed at least five members in order to audition for _The Sing-Off_ and managed to add Avi and Kevin. And that "Pentatonix" is a fancy way of saying "The Quintet." 😂 So anyway, Mitch had misgivings because he thought no one liked his voice, but it was a way to be with his two best friends and it would get him away from the bullies, so he agreed to try it. They passed the audition and made it onto _The Sing-Off_ (the third season, 2011), and immediately ran into more problems. The producers found out that Scott and Mitch are gay (they weren't hiding it) and were afraid that this fact would come out on their nice, clean, family-friendly show, so they took extreme measures to keep that from happening. First, for fear that if they let Pentatonix select their own clothing Mitch and Scott would dress too "gay," THEY selected and supplied all the mens' clothing for Pentatonix (and I've never understood why they gave them pink shirts and ties for the first performance). Then they pushed Kirstie (just 19 and a good deal more modest than she is now) to dress less modestly than she was comfortable with, to make it seem that she was sleeping with either Mitch or Scott. But the third thing they did was really vicious, as well as incredibly stupid. They were afraid that if people realized how high Mitch's voice really is they'd wonder about his sexual orientation, so they instituted a new rule that ONLY applied to the third season; it was dropped in the fourth season. They made a rule that at the beginning of the season each band must select one lead singer, who would ALWAYS be their lead, throughout the entire season. And they told Pentatonix that THEIR lead singer had to be Scott, because they weren't afraid of Scott's baritone. It was a direct continuation of the bullying Mitch had gotten in high school, except that this time the bullies were adults in a position of authority, and the gay-bashing part wasn't disguised at all, though it was still directed against Mitch's voice. And this time it was hurting Mitch's friends as well as Mitch. It wasn't until their twelfth performance that Pentatonix actually managed to deliver their first Mitch slap, under rather extreme conditions, and it won the show for them, but it was touch and go for a while. And all of this has left Mitch with a really nasty case of imposter syndrome. It was only during the pandemic lockdown that Mitch finally got professional care for it, and he's finally beginning to be comfortable in his own body as a result, to the great relief of his many fans.

I always wondered why Mitch never got the lead. It sounded like he was going to when they were going to do Believe by Cher but they changed it to their friends song that got booted the week before. I'm sorry, I'm having a brain fart and can't remember the name of it. It was the one where they skipped. Black and yellow outfits. I was so happy when he got his slap on 12. It kills me to know that he was bullied for that magnificent voice. And by adults too. Excuse me but asshats!

Mitch did get some stand-out moments on The Sing-Off besides performance 12. Mitch was in musical theater, choirs, plays, talent competitions, etc, in elementary school, middle school and high school. He was in some plays with Kirstie and with Scott. He always had musical star energy. There are some great videos online of Mitch performing when was young. He thrived on stages of all types. I think that his last musical play while in high school was "Sweeney Todd". Mitch had friends in the theater and choir communities while in school. He's still close to some of them and has shown up on their Instagram lives and/or interviews, etc. It's interesting to hear them talk about growing up in Arlington.

@@Kari5274 I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment. But it was also very strange. In the first place, it appears that the producers never told the judges about the rule change. The other bands just followed the rule, but Pentatonix pushed back against it repeatedly. They did manage to give Mitch a few solos, just kept them to his lower registers. They picked songs that actually required two lead singers, or even three. As Avi and Kevin got more and more favorable attention from the judges they featured them more and more, culminating in that epic bass vs. beatboxer battle/duet in their eleventh performance. And they didn't restrict Mitch's range at all when he was singing harmony, which was technically in the rules but certainly violated the intent. And every time they, ahem, "bent" the rule, the judges praised them for it. And not once did that praise include the phrase, "Well, you know you broke a rule there but...," which is how we know the judges weren't in on it. And then the producers did something so blatant that it actually got noticed - after Pentatonix won and visited the Trevor Project, on film, the producers edited out any and all indications that the Trevor Project was specifically founded to reduce suicide rates among (gasp!) gay kids. But a lot of people have heard of the Trevor Project and love it, and those people took offense, and said so publically. My personal conclusion is that bigotry turns normally intelligent people into idiots, because that's certainly how it played out on _The Sing-Off._

@@margretrosenberg420 you'd figure in 2011 or whatever people would be a little more open. Who cares who someone loves? It's none of anyone's business! I'm glad they pushed back. I know Sarah would have said something.. She's on Broadway too much not to.. Shawn would too. As much as I think Ben was a d*ck, I don't think he would have an issue with it. I wonder if that's why they lost their recording contract. Stupid move on their part. I'm a huge ptx fan. I just found voiceplay and am starting to like some of their songs, I don't know.why they are dirty in a lot of the ones I've seen. Home Free I don't want anything to do with. Partly bc as soon as Avi left ptx he went and sang with them which really upset me and partly bc they are country and I just can't listen to that. I don't like that genre with few exceptions.. You know what shows real class? After what the producers did to them, and the record company dumping them, they still went back and sang on the Sing Off the years after they won. And did it with class. Also letting Mitch fly. What a wonderful middle finger they gave! I call "I Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers my middle finger song. Good song.

Avi's the one who blew speakers; Matt's voice doesn't appear to be quite that low yet. I expect that he'll be reaching true basso profundo levels within a couple of years since his range is still growing.

Less about low voice and more about the venues they're playing and having better bass speakers. Both of them have made them rumble. The only times Avi genuinely broke the speakers were earlier in their career
