@@firstname5373 the work " speak" is a Malay word meaning " kicking" Takraw is Thai word for Rattan ball. The old name is Sepak Raga. Raga is a Malay word for Rattan ball. There is an interesting twist in this sport. It was reported in annal history of Malaysia. Way back in 15 th century, a group of young men were playing this sport. One of them was the son of the Prime Minister. A royal entourage was passing through. The Crown Prince was riding his horse in that profession. The son of the Prime Minister kicked the ball and it went straight to the head gear of the Crown Prince He was very upset and killed the son of the Prime Minister. The folks were very upset and went straight to the palace to attack the Sultan. Upon hearing the news, the Prime Minister quickly pacifier th and reminded them it was not the Malay culture to wage war against a Sultan. He however said he would never recognise the Crown Prince as future Sultan. It had far implication as in Malay culture, approval of the Prime Minister was needed to approve ascension to the throne. The Sultan banished his son to the neighbouring state

I'm an English guy living on a small island in Thailand, and you will often see friends playing this on bits of spare land. Thailand is one of the best in the world, and the top level players can deliberately hit the top of the net on a serve so that the ball drops dead on the other side... they can jump up to play a 'smash' but then change and use the sole of their shoe to make a drop shot... amazing! The 'ball' is made from rattan cane or a plastic, and is not 'soft'! Love watching this game!

Sepak takraw is like a shared cultural sport in the Southeast Asian nations. Even the name is a combination of Malay 'kick' and Thai 'woven rattan thing'. In pure Malay, it is called sepak raga, which just means the same thing. It is solid ground no spring. I personally witnessed sepak takraw players here in the Philippines since grade school because my classmate in grade school is an Athlete in sepak takraw. I am so fond of this game because of him and he is also my crush back then. The way they really jump up high surpassing the net is so awesome and somewhat unrealistic if you have not seen it personally but to those of us seen it in person are totally awestruck. Their training is no joke. They have to be flexible like gymnastics players and they have to do a lot of jumping as well but not just jumping as you can see their movements has different stunts as well in midair to kick or block the ball. It was totally awesome. I love this game more than basketball or volleyball although not talented for this game.

Most kids around these parts start playing when they're really young man. Start off at age 6-7, and the ones that excel, excel to a ridiculous degree as you've seen. Yeah it's inhuman and awesome. In answer to your questions - 1) The ball is traditionally made of woven rattan/wicker. It's hollow, but lightweight and flexible. In these modern times though light plastic can simulate the same thing. 2) There's no springboard... All those guys are jumping for real. Yeah it's mind-blowing. 3) It IS pretty much volleyball with only your legs.

The sepak takraw players mostly have wrists injuries. Becos when they land they use their wrists to support them. This is an old sport originates from malacca, malaysia, few hundred years ago in the 16th century played in the palace court. The ball was made of rattan, over time they changed the material to plastic.

You also use the sole of your foot to either dink or snap, more control but less power. Used to do nothing but stretch an stretch. But I was not great at it. When peeps play, it was always for something, drinks, a little side bet. And everyone gears up by wearing a Bandara to protect foreheads. It’s basically volleyball without hands.

Regulation balls used for sepak takraw are now made of plastic or synthetic fiber - more springy and doesn't hurt as much when they come into contact with your foot, ankle, leg or body. Traditional balls however were made from woven rattan - harder and heavier than modern regulation balls, and when they hit your body, you feel it.

Sepak takraw is the competetive (and modern) form of Sepak Raga Sepak Raga is played with the same ball, but basically the players just volleying the ball, passing the ball to each other. Sepak Raga is old, very old, at the very least is 500 years old (the Malay Silat martial art legend Hang Tuah is recorded in written history playing sepak raga with his friends near a busy market when a guy ran amok and kill innocent people, and then he came to rescue the people by defeating the guy, and he lives about 500 years ago). As others have said, no springboard. This sport is from the olden days where every kids is trained in martial arts and thus very agile by today's standard. This game revolve not only a tactic of how to defeating an opponent but the most important is to fight with your own mental. The players play their own role and a 'Killer' is the one who you saw doing summersault to smack the ball down to touch the floor of the opponent court. The Sepak (kick) Takraw (name of the rattan ball).., a hand full size of ball is relatively hard. Player must carefully avoid for the ball to being hit their face as it may cause the player lose their teeth easily. This torturing game play with pride and each opponent team will mocking the opponent when they score a point. When the opponent raise temper, they will lost their focus and will keeps loosing until defeated. Game over once the score reach 15 points.

Takraw is popular in SEA. 3 players for each team. Striker and Setter (who set the ball for Striker in last hit) are in the front of their own field. Server in the back. Each team has only 3 hits to send the ball to another side (same as volleyball). No spring on the floor buddy :). They practice again and again. Jump > float in the air > hit the ball > one of the leg will be pivot point for full flip kick. Awesome reaction. From Thailand :)

Welp I have a teacher who is actually a former national team. He said that those professional has practice since they were young like 7 years old. The highest jump record I believe it was around 4 meter wasn't sure if that was from the ground but it was done by Thailand. I can only sun-back (malaysia kick technique [turn back to the net and high kick]) I can't do a full round backflip kick(which Thai people claim that it was their kick technique). It difficult and very dangerous. My teacher could jump higher than 2 meter which is already stun me. When I was young and play it the rule say that they allow any part of the leg, foot, head, shoulder, elbow. This is actually a very fun sport recommend to try it once if you haven't. Also some small detail> Originally these balls were made from a kind of wood that hit really hard you could get some blood when got hit in the head. But nowadays they use a kind of plastic to duplicate the ball. I wasn't sure about if they still use the original wooden ball in the sport contest 🤔 And yeah the floor isn't a spring board. It is totally a cement. If I do those sun-back kick these day I would say... "MY LEGS!!!" 😂

In the past, Thai takraw was made of small wooden sticks, hand-woven until it was a handcrafted takraw ball. which is heavy until there is a takraw competition in the SEA Games Malelia asked to change the rules of using plastic sepak takraw instead. Therefore, the traditional takraw of Thailand is a wicker ball made of wicker wood called "Wai".

Hi, I'm from Malaysia. This game is recorded to have been played since the 15th century in South East Asia (specifically Malacca AKA Malaysia). It was called, Sepak Raga then. The rule is just to juggle the ball, prevent it from falling to the ground. The balls, as you suspect, were made of rattan, plaited to become like a spherical basket. The word 'Raga' means basket. It has been told that Thailand was the first country to introduce the net into the game. Net is 'Takraw' in Thai language. 'Sepak' means kick in Malay language while 'Takraw' means net in Thai. The 'Sepaktakraw' name resulted from the combination of the two words from differents languages. The court size is exactly the same as Badminton Court. The net height is 5 ft. No, the court floor is not made of anything bouncy. Just the same as Badminton court. We used to play on tarmac too 😅😅😅. Since the court floor isn't made of anything bouncy, player have to train themselves so that they would be able to jump pass the net height. Some of the players are able to jump so high to the point where it looks like they defy the law of gravity 😅😅, just like slam dunk, but this game is primarily played using foot. The players can use any parts of their body except hands. This game is popular in asia, especially south east asia. Since it origins from Malaysia & Thailand, those two countries are almost unbeatable in any championship. This sport has been played in Asian Games and other sporting events in south east asia. Other than south east Asian countries, this game has also been played in The U.S, Germany, China, Korea, Japan and some other countries around the world. Maybe you should watch the real game of Sepaktakraw to get better understanding of how the game is played. Here is a good one. Enjoy!: kzbin.info/www/bejne/naSXaoaXebONrLs
