Watch their latest tour of this song live….2022….it is so good! And the autotune was only because Cher used it so heavily in the 90’s. They are just that great! Also watch their Star Spangled Banner performance from this year’s College Championship. Not many have reacted to it yet.

The guy you identified as their bass is actually Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth), their beatboxer. True pentaholics all know how important Kevin is. Not only is he one of the best beatboxers in the world (if not THE best), he's a genius. Kevin has a degree from Yale's pre-med program; he speaks five languages, including Mandarin; he's classically trained since childhood on piano, saxophone, and cello; he has perfect pitch; he's performed at Carnegie Hall twice, once on saxophone and once on cello; and he's an incredibly kind person. And when he laughs the whole world seems like a brighter place. Their real bass is the other black guy, Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable). Matt truly does tend to be underrated, at least by some fans, because his style is quieter than Avi's. (Avi, pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable, Kaplan was their original bass but he left in 2017 for personal reasons and was replaced by Matt.) When Avi would begin his bass harmony line everyone noticed. People who hear those older recordings regularly say things like, "Oh, Avi! I love that bass!" whenever he'd begin singing, regardless of who was actually performing the solo. Yes, Avi's voice is beautiful. Yes, Avi has a phenomenal range. But Avi himself has stated that he's more comfortable in his solo career than he was with Pentatonix, and Matt loves being in Pentatonix. And Matt also has a beautiful voice and a phenomenal range, he just tends to keep his volume down when he's singing harmony so as not to overwhelm the soloist, so people don't notice how good he is.

@@candacelong7643 Unavoidable. The easiest way to demonstrate what Matt does is to demonstrate what he doesn't do and that means comparing him to Avi. I assume you've watched "Aha Singapore the Star Vista," because most pentaholics have; I certainly have. I love it. And for me, the best thing about that video isn't Mitch going hyperactive on the high part; it's Avi systematically destroying the sound system. I find that hilarious. I think Matt could do that just as well as Avi did; I think he currently has a range that is nearly identical to Avi's and that his range is still growing. I'm a huge fan of Matt. But I also think that we'll never see something like that from Matt, specifically because he restrains himself. And for my money, that restraint is even more impressive than the ability to blow out speakers.

The beauty of PTX is that if you do not believe then watch it live. The only addin is autotune on the Cher song as an homage to the original. Cher was one of hte first in the 90's to make use of autotune and that song was iconic for the song and the tune.

In the early years, Pentatonix stuck to the "rules" of a capella, but even then there was sound editing on their studio recordings. They have a genius sound editor they have worked with for years, Ed Boyer, who specializes in a capella. PTX members almost always record their parts separately and he balances the parts and applies echo and other effects to sharpen the sound. There's a couple of interviews with Boyer you can find online where he talks about what he does. In the last few years, Pentatonix has experimented more with sound processing, adding instruments, extra vocal layers, etc. audio processing, etc., particularly on their original songs, where they are trying to get a current pop sound. They also work with experienced pop producers and sound editors in addition to their regular team. However, Pentatonix can still perform most of their songs live and sound almost the same as the studio version.

That's Mitch's real voice singing the "everybody dance now." Dude has an insanely great range. They did use autotune in a couple places in this, which is very unusual for Pentatonix, but it fits the 90's theme.

The person singing "Beautiful Life" is Matt, their bass. His actual range goes up to the middle of the tenor range. When Cher originally performed "Believe" she used autotune as a special effect, so this is one of the rare cases where Pentatonix uses autotune, in order to remain true to the original. You can hear the distortion in Kirstin's voice.

Pentatonix (like all professionally recorded musicians) adds reverb (the echoing sound) in their studio productions. This is not cheating, it's just part of the recording process. They generally don't do a whole lot of other studio tricks in their earlier stuff. The newer stuff (including this medley) uses a few more effects, including the iconic Autotune on "Believe" (and an effect on "Blue"), a bit of something on Kevin's drums on "Gonna Make You Sweat", and some effects on "It Feels So Good". Listen to the live performances to hear the little differences.

Chadwick, Mitch is a counter tenor, thats the highest singing voice of a male singer. He can even sing a whistle. Matt Sallee is the bass to Barton, Scott has a insane voice reach, from bass to almost tenor. Kirstin is a so called memo soprano, the almost highest singing voice with females. Kevin, the beatboxer is a tenor. Be safe. Elmar from Germany
@margretrosenberg420
@margretrosenberg420 Жыл бұрын
Scott's range actually runs from the middle of the bass range to the middle of the tenor range, with falsetto on top of that. I believe he has something like a 5 or 6 octave range. Mitch's range is just over 6 octaves, but he's most comfortable in his higher registers. Kirstin is listed as a mezzo soprano, which is the lowest soprano range, just above alto. But that's because mezzo is her preferred range. In real life she sings all the way from the low alto range (though not contralto, which is more like a baritone) through coloratura soprano, which really is the highest soprano range. Kirstin sings as high as Mitch, and her whistle notes are better than his, as Mitch himself says.

Okay...Kevin ( in the black leather/white jackets) is the beatboxer ( he's also a tenor with a high falsetto...and plays cello, sax and keyboard...at concert level). Matt ( in the blue check and red jackets) is the bass with a superb range and a surprising falsetto ( he also plays drums, so he and Kevin make a great team) . Mitch is the countertenor ...highest voice for a man...and it's natural to him to have that high a range. Yes, he's trained, but he doesn't have to push his voice to reach the really high notes. Kirstie is a mezzo soprano...between alto and soprano, but she has an amazing range ( they all do) and great belting abilities. Scott is a baritone but his range is impressive...he takes on the bass when Avi or Matt take lead and can reach alto in high register...and has a falsetto! They do this song live and it' sounds exactly the same. Miles Reuben has all the songs from the Hollywood Bowl ( November last year) on his channel all separated the different songs. This 90's Dance Medley is on there. You should check it out and see how close to the official video they are. Yes there was autotune used for Cher's song...as a nod to her use of it. Normally they don't ever use it. There is a bit of post production on their official videos....that's normal for the industry, but they keep it to a minimum because they want to be able to do the songs live and have it sound exactly the same.

Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhvmes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); and Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world-class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre-med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese. Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZbin, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga's "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class vear ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC. While at USC, Scott joined a USC-based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi's performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZbin videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello-Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re-arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five-piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZbin), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn't think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZbin, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them but when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super-viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony's top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best-selling genre), and have had multi-platinum album sales, sold-out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) was brought in as the new bass singer in early 2018. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have been nominated for a 4th Grammy. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have been nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. They have announced that they will have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame to be installed next year.

They did add a bit of autotune in a few places for authentic sound on this medley, as the 90s was when pop started bringing it in as an edm effect (instead of trying to sneakily fix vocal mistakes). PTX is always up front about anything not 100% a cappella. Still they do perform these live & if you compare their live performances to their official audio/video you can hear that it's practically identical & they really don't tweak them much in studio. When they arrange them they are thinking of how to do them live, because that's the point of a cappella.

As for how they manage to stay together on a live performance, it amazes me. I would love to know what they are getting in their earpieces. Maybe a click track? Yes, they have a click track in their earpieces. And Scott and Kirstin both say that if they have trouble getting their note right they listen for Mitch, who is ALWAYS on the right note, and adjust accordingly. They also both say that the biggest problem they have in live performances is that every once in a while they'll notice that they've simply stopped singing, because it was interfering with listening to Mitch's beautiful voice. 😉 I think Mitch is finally starting to believe them.

Cher (in the 90s) specifically added an effect (not hiding it) called autotune. It was unique to use it purposely because it could cause odd side effects. Cher used it because it did. For her song, they used it for effect. This song came out during the height of COVID. Whether it would be done in concert is debatable, however it could be done if they chose to do Cher's song with autotune. They could also add some songs and leave Cher's song out. There are studio edits used to join parts, but these could easily be practiced for live performances. They have the skills.

Their sound guy may add reverb and of course the studio sound is balanced so that no one voice covers up the others. By all means listen to their live performances to see how well they do it with no production. They’ve been singing together for so long that they get out of each other’s way perfectly. And yes, auto tune was used as an effect in two songs because it was (much more heavily) used in those original songs.

You should check out their performances on the show 'The Sing Off', it's where they got their start and I think you would really enjoy watching how they were in the beginning compared to how they sound -now-. They were on the Sing Off 3rd season. There's about 12 performances plus the finale where they announce the winner (spoiler they won). Scott is indeed the King of Runs, one of the judges was a huge Scott fan and kept praising his riffs and runs lol. Mitch and Kirstie were a bit more withdrawn during that time period and Mitch kept his voice in a lower tenor range throughout the performance (he'd been teased a lot in high school for his high voice) and doesn't really come out a bit until I believe the 12th performance and even then it isn't the true 'Mitch Slap' we know and love today. Also I would suggest checking out their Evolution of's (Music, Michael Jackson, Rhianna, Arianna Grande, NSYNC, and Beyoncé) They are simply amazing and done in 1 take. Their shifts and transitions are just simply flawless!

05:36 "I'm glad they have a girl's voice...." Oddly, while the other two big a cappella groups on KZbin are also 5 members each, neither has a female member. Home Free is 5 guys, and VoicePlay has had occasional female guest artists in the past couple of years because they are 1 member short, but their original lineup has always been all-male. One of the reasons I like PTX is because of Kirstie's inclusion, as I think the female voice gives them a versatility that the others don't quite have, regardless of how good their high male tenors might be. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Kirstie is very easy on the eyes! If you haven't seen Kevin's cover of Down on his solo channel, you're underestimating just how talented he is - it doesn't matter how good you think he may be, he's actually better! Just search for "Kevin Olusola down" and you'll see it - I guarantee it will surprise you!

You would think Voice play would realise it's the songs with the female singers that do best

The hit "Believe" from Cher was one of the first to use Auto tune....... PTX emulated the effect. That song without the effect would not be the same. Also a couple of other songs in this medley used it too. Again to emulate the originals. It's not that big a deal. These guys can sing and sing and sing. They do not need to be helped by electronics.

On this video they used autotune on the songs that used it on the original, such as one or more by Cher. Otherwise.....its them. Yea, we all understand, we went through that and the Mitch Slap periods too. :)

Mitch is a true Counter Tenor and has a very specific Timbre to his voice, so he can hit very high and unusual notes. In this video do add the "cher" effect when they sing the Cher song, but the rest of it is just them. They do this live in their concerts. It's awesome. And yes they do generally record their parts separately, and the sound engineer puts them together. And Home Free does not have a "girl" and they are not at all boring..not as good as PTX..but they are pretty amazing.

That's totaly Mitch. They use autotune in the Cher / Believe but only becuase the effect is part of the original. PTX mkes sure that it can do its music live in concert so they almost never use anything otehr than maybe a little reverb.

You can't sing Cher's song Do You Believe, with out using auto tune, that's what the song is famous for other than that they don't use voice effects or paste and copy because they sing it live in concert. In concert they don't use the Cher auto tune effect just their normal voices.

Cher's song was the first to use autotune as a feature in music back in the 90's PTX is staying true to her version. Just to respect her vision.

Autotune! They started using it on Cher's song because it was true to the song and the period. They don't use it on live performances of course.

Cher was pretty much the first auto tune user. They are paying homage to her by using it in this song. they normally do not use it any. Only with Mitch and kirstie. It was a medley and it ended just fine. Maybe research some on this particular song because they did things they normally do not do. It is a cover . Listen to Chers song I believe in Love and you will see why they did that.

True story so about 11 years ago maybe 12 when they were in highschool well Mitch Kirstin and Scott that is that went to the same highschool in Texas together and well Mitch was bullied and picked on for having a girl’s voice his voice was always high and he not only nurtured it but he played with it, played around with it, reaching notes no other person can reach and his belts are one of a kind too, I mean I won’t talk about it much since you’ll get a lot of comments saying what I’m basically telling u but Mitch is basically super-human or an alien the only one that has 9 octaves and 3 tones for a reason he’s the highest vocalist then any female and male singer in the music industry but ya anyway into some personal stuff with their lives Mitch and Kirstin(Kirstie) some people call her (Thirstie) for a nickname since it sounds like Kirstie well him and her dated for a few years on and off multiple of times truly I thought they were gonna get married but then he came out as gay and she was fine with it and wanted him happy but they dated while he was gay but he told her that they should just be friends since he couldn’t keep her fulfilled like he use to since he came out so they broke up but are still really close and Scott also came out but they are extremely happy and we pentaholics always support our guys we want nothing but the best for each of them

If you had have heard the originals to these songs, you'd understand the nods they did to the original performers - the parts you "didn't like" were using techniques used in these performances. Think of it as a tribute to the songs and performers. Suggestion for you - take the time to actually listen to the originals, if you care to
