The Story of Pentatonix: more than a decade ago, three high school friends (Scott Hoying, who sings first; Kirstin Maldonado, who sings third; and Mitch Grassi, who sings fourth, with the angelic countertenor voice) formed a singing group that they called The Trio (yes, kind of obvious). When Scott went off to university, he joined an a capella college group and there met an upperclassman named Ben Bram, who had already been offered a job with a television a capella competition called The Sing-Off. Scott thought that he and his friends could win this competition, but Ben advised him that the minimum size for a competing group was five. He suggested that a rhythm section - a "vocal bass" and a beatboxer - would let the Trio shine. Ben and the three friends found Kevin Olusola "celloboxing" (beatboxing while playing the cello) in a viral KZbin video and then found Avi Kaplan, a bass who was training to be an opera singer, through friends. The newly enlarged group was renamed Pentatonix after the pentatonic scale in music, and they won the competition (you can find the televised episodes online). But although part of the prize for the show was supposed to be a recording contract, the group soon found themselves on their own because the record company couldn't see how to market them. They took to KZbin and the road, recording their own videos and touring at small live venues, and the rest is history.

For many, their 1st exposure to PTX is Hallelujah (it was for me). 1st up was Scott Hoying (baritone), 2nd up was Avi Kaplan (bass, left the group in 2017 replace by Matt Sallee), 3rd was Kirstin Maldonado, 4th was Mitch Grassi (counter tenor, I cried the 1st time I heard him sing), and the 5th person is Kevin Olusola (beatboxer, cellist, tenor).

My first PTX was evolution of music. I was forcing music on my kid who has decided that he only likes heavy metal and it came up in my suggestions. My kid still only likes metal but I became a pentaholic 😂
@heidi_d2 жыл бұрын
Also, if you see a girl, it’s Kirstin. She changes her look a lot. So does Mitch - the one with the high tenor voice. If you wonder if that’s Mitch, it is! The ONLY change, is the bass. Avi (the one who looks like Jesus) was replaced by Matt around 2018 (he’s the young, cute black guy that you’ll see in later videos 😍) both are fantastic!

Mine was Sound of Silence. I was so astonished I then went to this one. After listening to it for hundreds of times, it STILL makes me cry. A masterpiece.
@margretrosenberg4202 жыл бұрын
While Kevin is sometimes mistaken for a tenor he's actually a lyric baritone, as is Scott. Lyric baritones have an unusually large range for a baritone, that extends upward into the tenor range and downward into the bass range (hence Scott's ability to take over the bass line when Avi or Matt is soloing). If you've only ever heard Kevin sing in his tenor range it's an easy mistake to make. And for all that Avi's lowest notes have been known to blow out amps, he's a lyric bass - his range extends upward into the baritone.

Mitch (counter tenor, highest voice range, shorter white male), Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty mezzo soprano, only girl in the group) and Scott (baritone and bass when the bass has a lead, tall blonde) have been together since about 10 years old. Kirstie and Mitch are chameleons and constantly changing their looks. They are so great at singing together and not stepping on each other's vocals. Kevin the beatboxer and cellist also played in Carnegie Hall twice before 14, he also plays the saxophone and speaks fluent Mandarin. Avi, the bass (white male with dark facial hair) while no longer in the group since 2017, it was nothing wrong, he wanted to go solo but they got Matt Salle (tall black male with amazing bass voice) who has a voice like liquid silk and was a great addition to the group. Great reaction songs for Pentatonix: The Sound Of Silence The Prayer Bohemian Rhapsody A Little Space Coffee in Bed Cheerleader Radioactive Sing Can't Hold Us Say Something Starships Break my Heart When the Party's Over Dreams Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (Grammy winner) Havana New Rules x Are You That Somebody Butter x Dynamite Shallow Come Along Rather Be Daft Punk (Grammy Winner) Jolene with Dolly Parton (Grammy winner) That should give you a good start. Welcome to being a Pentaholic. We meet daily on KZbin to new reactions.

Mitch is a Countertenor but he explains it best when he says he is a male soprano. Scott’s voice can be deep and sweet but he has an amazing range and tone. Avi is a rare true bass. Of course you had to play it twice! So many people have done that the first time, and it's usually Hallelujah they hear first. Sometimes there are rare songs that are just perfect. in the 20th Century one of those was Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, and in the 21st Century, Pentatonix's Hallelujah is one of those rare ones too.
