They don't use drum machines. It's all beatboxing. But, what they will do, is layer the beatboxing tracks sometimes. So Layne does make all the sounds 🙂 I'm at a Patreon tier where we get to see them walk us through their arrangements from time to time, and they have no secrets and show us every single track in there. It's easy to see that they're all vocally produced, and Layne several times has reproduced sounds live on stream. He's a very talented beatboxer 🙂 Ofc, the beatboxing gets the same audio engineer treatment as the singing does, as all a cappella groups do 🙂

It was definitely Layne doing all the drums and he IS one of the best vocal percussionists.

Acapella groups let you know when they use instruments. Usually they show them in the video. Layne is doing a great job on the drums. Great reaction.

You said that he would say VoicePlay would be incredible if the beatboxer was doing this. Layne is world-class beatboxer - you've heard one of the best.

On the one hand Layne would be proud that you mistook him for a drum machine, on the other hand he would be so offended that you'd think he'd need it. lol It's all him. He's given us demos on Patreon and showed us how he records. It's amazing.

It is all Layne doing the drums. Did you not take notice to the live performances when he was doing the percussions ? They showed all this in the introduction to Voice Play video. Please listen to it again. Thank you for taking the time to put the extra behind the scenes video along with the main video. Geoff always likes to have fun & add funny things to his commentaries . You will see this in his notations of each character..

They turn into characters from the movie, Eli is the Mayor, Earl becomes the Behemoth the zombie with the axe in the head that says bunny, J-None turns into the Werewolf with the.plaid shirt, Geoff is a vampire and Lastly Layne becomes Lock the little Trick or treater

It's all Layne on the percussion - I think what you are mistaking for a drum machine is the reverb and other post effects added to his drums. And the boy is Layne's nephew. If you want to know all the members: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnvXqJaLoM-ppJY

no drum machine. BUT - Layne sometimes chooses to lay down multiple tracks, esp. on his own arrangements, and this is one he did arrange.

If you want to hear Layne and Geoff go off the rails listen to Friends On the Other Side. That last part will have you looking for a bank of sub woofers and a full drum kit. I blew a set of headphones on that part. I'd also recommend Enemy and HALO if you want to hear more of Layne beatboxing, I Knew You Were Trouble to hear him rap, Little Mermaid or The Grinch to hear his character voices, and Warriors or Nothing Else Matters will let you see Violayne. Those last two are the only songs they do that have an actual instrument in them. Everything else is ALL Layne but it is sometimes layered in post production or mixing.

You said that you would say VoicePlay would be incredible if the beatboxer doing this. Layne is world-class beatboxer - you've heard one of the best. Earl (tenor), Geoff (bass) and Layne (baritone) are original founding members dating from middle school, 2 left the group after high school, in 1999, Mykal Kilgore (high tenor) and in 2003, Scott Porter (beatboxer) l eft for an acting career (has been in Lucifer season 6 and all of Friday Night Lights. Scott can be seen with VoicePlay for the Halo theme). Layne moved from baritone to beatboxer when Scott left. Eli was in a different school and competed against 4:2:Five in high school competitions. Eli graduated and became lead tenor in a rock band until he joined VoicePlay in 2010. VP was without a baritone and in 2011, brought on Tony Wakim who was active until he wanted to go into production. He and Layne bought Pattycake Studios in2017 that both Geoff and VoicePlay use regularly but not exclusively. In 2014, The Spin-Off had them on their show and the did 2 years touring for Spin-Off. Earl left in 2020 for personal reasons. J None was recruited by the US Navy for his vocal talents in 2021 for a 5 yr stint and has comeback on leave to do "Friends on the Other Side" in 2022 and in 2023 he joined them for the cover of Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters". They used guest vocalists to fill in their 2 openings and brought on the fabulous Cesar De La Rosa as a baritone or tenor. You can see his tryout with VP in "We're Good". When J None was at his goodbye party, he said he'd be back so we will see. I love that you did this 2 parter!

@@TouchyReactions My pleasure - I love this group. I don't have a TV, live out in the sticks so need Dish or DirecTV but since my husband of 48 yrs died, I've pared back so I could make the payments on my 78 acres. As for now, I use KZbin to keep up with world news and US news. VoicePlay is my dessert. You two have been a pleasure.

There us actually a video of Layne doing a drum solo on stage. But could be that in post production he has double tracked or amplified... VP are always transparent about what and how they make and arrange. It's a compliment to Layne that you think that but a bit of slight that you think he can't. The actual recording of the the soundtrack has already been done before video... They are still singing in this video to ensure everything us in sync..

No drum machine. But they often do layer the vocal percussion so that you get a combination of different sounds.

Layne Stein is known as the Carrot Lord. He loves to teas the guys, especially J. None, like you saw toward the end of the BTS video. He'll hold the carrot to his face like a long nose and get right in J None's face, sometimes touching his cheek before he pushed him back..

Soryr, no drums. Just Layne. If there was a drum they would show it, and put it in the credits. And just so you know, Hone Free's Adam Rupp is as good if not better. It pains me to say it , but I can't lie. The boy is a nephew I think. Layne only has daughters and Geoff's son is very young. Only two have left the group - Earl, and J.None. Geoff, Layne and Eli (pronounced as ellie ) are the constants. The track is laid down first, and edited, then played for them to sing along to live as they film.

Nope, no drum track. Every percussion sound came out of Layne. Sure, they will record multiple tracks and layer them, but they do not use instruments, except for the rare occasion that Layne pulls out the violin. He is just that good.

Since you are fans of Nightmare Before Christmas' Sally, VoicePlay does a version of Oogie Boogie's song. It is a great song and I'm not a fan of Nightmare Before Christmas. :) Just thought I'd let you know even though it's been a while since you've reacted to this song.
