Aimee is one of my favourite female singer-composer. It's from Magnolia Soundtrack. Crowded House are an awesome underrated band from Australia. Of course Suzanne Vega is such a so great songwriter. And Kate Bush, the best of all.

Neil Finn (singer, songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist from Crowded House) is from my city of Auckland, New Zealand. I have seen Crowded House perform several times and each time has been thrilling. Neil Finn writes intricate melodies, highly original lyrics and has a wonderful voice. I also saw him perform as vocalist/guitarist with Fleetwood Mac a few years ago which was a treat. All their albums are great but my all-time favourite is Together Alone which is song after song of amazing beauty.

Aimee Mann is such an underrated singer/songwriter. The entire Magnolia soundtrack is one of the best out there. I’ve been listening to Neil Finn since Split Enz, I owned the True Colours picture disc. 😁 GREAT BAND. Kate Bush is an experience, some people get her, some don’t, but she was a big part of MTV and the 80’s and we loved her.

You must watch the performance of Tragically Hip - Grace, Too (Toronto, Aug. 14, 2016), which was heart-wrenching. The singer Gord Downie had brain cancer in that show and it was their final tour before he died, and the band disbanded upon Gord Downie's death.

Great set choice to the author! Neil and Kate are my top 2. Big Aimee Mann fan, too. Some connections: Mitchell Froom, who produced Temple of Low Men, was married to Suzanne Vega for a short time. He's also in Crowded House now. I've seen Aimee and Neil on the same bill at The Wiltern in L.A. Enough for now...

Magnolia is one of my favorite films. PT Anderson is an amazing director. Aimee has so many great songs. Definitely deserves a marathon. Love this list! It looks like one I would make.

I think you will enjoy exploring Crowded House. Great harmonies, often satirical lyrics (Chocolate Cake springs to mind). A sentimental favorite of mine is Don't Dream It's Over... used effectively in The Stand. #nicknlexrequest Be Bop Deluxe - Axe Victim ....I'm on a mission 😀

Back in 1985, when most of the songs played on the radio were synthie-pop, Suzanne Vega was a revelation and started the revival of great guitar based songwriting, together with artists like Tracy Chapman a.o.. Like her to this day. Also a fan of Crowded House and of cause Kate Bush. Great marathon, Michael 👍

Thank you Michael. That was such a good marathon. That was my first listen to The Tragically Hip, and it was so great. I will have to look up your reaction Nick, I must have missed it. It was lovely to be reminded just how cool Aimee Mann sounds. I have an album of alternative takes on James Bond songs by David Arnold called Shaken and Stirred, and Aimee does a brilliant version of 'Nobody Does It Better' from The Spy Who Loved Me. She also guested on Rush's 'Time Stand Still' and you've gotta be good to duet with Geddy! Crowded House and Suzanne Vega are amazing, they could each have their own marathons no problem, and Kate is the greatest!!! Nice one Nick.

Ah, i remember seeing Suzanne Vega in the theatre hall of the University of Bremen with maybe 20-30 people shortly before she became really famous. At that time there was only one guy of a radio station who played that song quite often, and that was how we got to know her.

Aimee has been writing great songs for quite some time. If you were around in the 80’s you might have heard the song “Voices Carry” from the band ‘Til Tuesday (of which she was a member).

Plenty of great Suzanne Vega tracks to delve into (and Kate Bush, of course). I'd suggest In The Eye, Blood Makes Noise and In My Book Of Dreams... and if you want something a bit quirky, Fat Man And The Dancing Girl. Aimee Mann's I'm With Stupid album is also well worth a listen.

Seen Jerry Maguire just once and don't remember Wise Up being in it, but immediately recognized it from Magnolia. Probably because I have seen Magnolia several times. Great use of the song. I agree that music is an integral part of many films.

Really good selection here and they all ebb and flow together :). I was HOPING you'd "remember" the Aimee Mann track 😉and glad I was able to get you the physical copy of Magnolia🙂. I watch that film probably twice a year or more. Great scene when all the characters are singing it in their "moments". Had no idea it was in Jerry McGuire either! I think what's meant in the end of the song "Just Give Up", just give up the ghosts/the past anger and pain, the worries and troubles, and work forward to making yourself better and heal 😊. Suzanne Vega is awesome, she is very different these days when she was a bit more folky/jazzy on this debut album. It was this debut single that put her on the map. Crowded House would be played a lot on LA's New Wave/Alternative station back in the day, and now on Satellite Stations on various jobs I've had (only 2 of their songs usually :p). I'll have to look into Tragically Hip a bit more, they were also popular but never got into them. Kate Bush is an icon, and with these _alternative_ bands and vocalists, you and Lexi will be hearing many tracks that I have on the Playlists "Chill Out Already" that I sent you guys 2 years ago. - Lexi will really enjoy this marathon Michael. Thanks Nick. Btw - (Wrote this before you got it! And yes, it was Rita Hayworth) pronounce Marlene, like the actress (which the song is reference to) "Marlene Dietrich" 😉. I guess my "Girl" would have been Natalie Wood, her daughter Natasha Gregson Wagner who is also an actress (and looks like her, almost my age), and is famous for appearing in "High Fidelity".

The irony is that Suzanne Vega at the time thought that Marlene was judging Suzanne for having so many sex partners, but she later found out how...sexually adventurous MD was (this from he introduction to the song in a concert of hers I was blessed to see a few years ago)

Hounds of Love seems to me to be the weakest track from that album. Ironic because it is the title track from what is arguably her greatest release. Apparently after The Dreaming and it's unbridled madness, (genius really) EMI had been leaning on her to release an album of radio friendly hits. At first she flatly refused, but tben came up with a brilliant solution; cut the pie in two, give EMI their half so they can hear the coins clinking and get a good night's sleep, and her own second half, The Ninth Wave, which for those of us who have gone there, sleep will never be tbe same...Two perfecf haves, one accessible side and one deep side. THAT is what was so ingenius about this album, it worked on every level and literally pleased everyone, Lol..
