What I like about sport bikes is it’s just fun. It’s a riding experience that takes you to a far level of riding. Why I like harleys more? It’s just challenging when you want to throw it around and for me the rider triangle is nice when I’m riding for hours on end. I’m not a sportster guy. Never cared for them. Dyna/fxr/softail is what I prefer. Right now rocking a softail/grom/663 and building an 87fxr. Love bikes.

I've worked in metric shops and I've worked in a Harley shop. I was absolutely blown away at the amount of customization options available for Harleys. The absolute best thing about a Harley is that you can change anything, and I mean anything about it to fit what you want. The worst thing about a Harley is that you're going to have to change things to make it comfortable/handle right/have the power you want. Owned four different Harleys in the two years I spent in a dealership. When I left I immediately sold the last one and went back to a Speed Triple. I've done a fender eliminator and a tank bag. Everything else on the bike just works.

But it's not evolved at all, it's not what people who are into Harley's long term use as a main bike. . Harley guys generally ride a long time, long trips, commuting.. I ride my bike every day it's possible, to work and for fun.. if I didn't have a new softail (or dyna or touring chassis) I'd be in tons of pain. . I was I was 24 when I got my 883 i instantly knew I should of atleast got the 1200 for a starter bike. It's fun to be on 2 wheel and feel old school but it's not fun for what most Harley guys do.. and again that's long miles, commuting almost every day...we need comfort , power and performance...I'm sorry but you'd have to pour so much $ into a 883 to make it half as comfortable / fun as my 2017 designed frame and engine..

Little known secret. It is actually made from Iron, hence the weight and handling characteristics. Had one for about 4 months. It is fine on smooth road surfaces at speeds not exceeding 65 to 70 mph with moderate curves and no obstacles requiring evasive action or immediate stopping capabilities. Problem is most of the roads I encounter on a daily basis are full of imperfections and curves.

I thought this was an honest conversation about how non-Harley folks view Harley. I’ve been riding for decades and have ridden and owned dozens of bikes, many of which have been cruisers. Not one has been a Harley because every single riding experience I’ve had on one has been terrible. And when you say that you get a river of apology from Harley riders about how all the horrible braking, acceleration, handling and uncomfortable seating is just part of the “Harley experience”, or that it’s somehow completely reasonable that you need to upgrade half the bike at purchase. I’m not trying to hate on them - to their credit they often look amazing and nothing sounds as good as a Harley. But beyond that I think you have to be lost in the romance of Harley’s history to tell yourself that these are good bikes. Harley has just coasted on their old technology for so long that their bikes have become stupidly priced dinosaurs. And it’s likely going to be their undoing.
@zonacrs
@zonacrs 3 жыл бұрын
Or you do like most of us do and spend a metric ass ton on upgrades only to go really fast in a straight line and scare the shit out of ourselves in corners if you do not properly plan your line ahead. Kind of like a 60's/70's muscle car. For a lot of us, myself included, that is the journey of making it your own. Personally I switched from a 2004 Softail Deuce to a 2009 Street Glide simply because I wanted to put my jacket away and carry shit. Had/have no expectations that it's going to keep up with a sport standard on a twisty road, but I can pull out a cold water from the saddle bag on breaks and chew up miles within the limitations of the chassis. 100 plus ft/lbs to the rear wheel on 96" or bigger twin cams is easy with not terribly expensive mods. Another plus is that Harley hasn't locked down their ECU as tightly as others so fuel AND ignition tuning is available with a power commander, at least in states with no motorcycle emissions testing. Any town with a certified DynoJet dyno can eek out a 10 percent gain over stock with slip on mufflers and an air cleaner mod (not the 100 lb/ft mentioned, but close and air fuel ratio combined with ignition will make the flat spots go away). Once dialed they are a hoot but you have to understand what tool in the box it is and what you expect to do with it. Later air cooled models may have locked down the ECU further, not sure. That pig of mine has surprised a lot of unsuspecting cars and bikes. After all that bullshit I want a Z900RS because I'm a Boomer who lusted after the original Z1 and had a childhood friend that was the son of the local Harley dealer. Blah, blah. Just ride what makes you smile and it will be real to you. Never understood the talk shit brand banter and never will, not saying you are.

Random internet person here to give my opinion. So when I first got a bike I really wanted a crotch rocket because I'm an adrenaline junkie. However I have a bad back from years of doing crazy shit. I got a bike out of need for transportation so I expected to spend more time than average in the saddle. I decided on a cruiser after feeling the different riding positions and the cruiser fits the bill just fine for me. I could ride a crotch rocket, but probably not near as long as a cruiser. This said, just keep in mind not all people riding cruisers or harleys are simply fanboys or wannabe 1%ers but have an actual practical application for these bikes.

Yep, brand loyalty should be a cause of consistent quality of products, NOT glorifying old days that wont return. The sportster might be a blank canvas, but its the most expensive canvas one could ever buy. Just get a decent bike to begin with for less money - at least if you are not all about the style and feel of such a bike. Still, the price for the bikes is outrageous. Asking a premium tag for budget bikes.

Frame changed in 2004. I have an XL 05 883 with forward shifting. The longer shocks make mine taller than the iron so in cornering there is no issues with lean angle. The handling on mine is very neutral. To me the Iron is a totally impractical bike. The older XL was a better, more practical bike IMO. I have traveled all over country on mine, and have loved it. 883 is about 54 cubic inches. Mine is pretty stock. The carburetor was re-jetted, and high performance pipes, and air cleaner were added. Corbin seat, and touring style handle bars. Bad Boy 8" Have never felt like I had to have more power. My XL will tractor on fully loaded for camping, and cruise down the highway. I even took her over RMNP with no issues. Look forward to seeing the changes.

As someone who went from sport bikes to an Iron like this here's why: In my case my old man had a pan head back in the day, and since he's gotten to the point in his life where he can't really ride any more (Sight is going), he gave me his old Electra-glide. He knew I sold my old Hurricane cuz of a girl I was engaged to (long story), and gave me that. Super rough transition. While it was nice to ride on the highway, that's not really what I do. So I sold it and bought the Iron. I wanted a Harley for several reason: A: I wanted to ride something that was older in it's design and parts were plentiful. I know what it's like to own something that's difficult to fix. B: I didn't WANT to go fast. I went into the Dealer, they asked my experience, and try to get me on some of the bigger bikes and what not. They said I'd get bored on the sportster. I asked "Why?" Dude said: "Cuz it's slow." Me: Man. I'm in a Harley dealership. I WANT to go slow. I dunno if you've been paying attention but ya'll lost the speed wars like 30 years ago. If I wanted to go fast, I'd buy an R6. -_- Then he got all mad. heh. C: I wanted to have a kind of idea what it was like to be riding something that was sort of in the same family as my old man's panhead. So here we are. I wanted the experience of actually owning something I derided for most of my skwiddy youth. It's been 7 years, I still have the bike and I love that goofy collection of Iron. It's great for just dirdling around town and riding around the lakes out here.

I still love the look and sound of the Iron 883 but there wasn’t enough to keep my interest... The Fat Bob is my cruiser for weekends and road trips. The Kawi is my commuter only because I work near downtown Los Angeles and the Harley is a beast in the city. The Kawi is nimble and gets better mileage in the city but is no where as confortable as the Harley (sigh). Eventually I’ll get a full dresser... I just haven’t decided which one I want... It seems like there is literally no situation where a harley is even close to the best bike for something. Speed, cornering, long distance, versatility, reliability, there is always a bike that will do it way better, for way cheaper.

I went to a Harley Demo Day a few years back and got to ride EVERY model I'd lusted after since I was a kid. I walked away feeling... Disenchanted. I think my problem was that I had ridden too many different bikes by that point that were actually made properly. Never meet your heroes! lol

Harley's are the Cruiser standard because dealerships are like 7-11's. My 06 XLC 1200 vibrates like a mf'er and throws a check engine light every cool or humid morning. And I love it. The CEL goes away after a few minutes of riding.

Did you not see someone took off the heat shields on the exhaust. Not a very good purchase if you missed something like that and blame the bike for burning your boots!

@alpha Omega, Gold Wangs are so a bossy women (wife ?) Will ride with you. Leave her at home, ditch the 850+ lb micro processed plastic abomination some where, and ride a standard (or any under 500 lb bike). Recall what made you fall in love with Motorcycles and women the first place ! Peace....

I wonder how yammie would feel riding a scooter, they're still 2 wheels but very different and good in their own way. Some scooters even have cruiser like dynamics like the Honda pcx150 with forward angled foot positions.
