Back in UK Lockdown 2, I ordered some bike parts to convert my single speed road bike into a fixed gear bike. I have never rode a fixed gear bike before so what a great time to test it out than in an empty lockdown car park.

Just an FYI, those Miche Pistards don't have machined sidewalls around the rim. So it is recommended NOT to use brakes on them.

@@ethannestlen1343 from my experience i dont really have that much slack but a lot, it make the ride very fun but i sprint with my 15 yo chicken legs. the chain pop off.

you're gonna need some foot retention and make that chain line tighter the loose chain line is probably why you're feeling that little "skipping" you mentioned
@wyoddestro3 жыл бұрын
Yup! And if it is to loose and you try to skid it might come off. Happened to me and that's one of the reason I still have a front brake on my fixed gear!

Could be the cog slipping

@@wyoddestro wow ive been cycling for years and years and never thought of the effects of chain coming off on a fixed with no brakes! I agree, front brake is a must, even if you never touch it

MAKE SURE THAT COG IS TIGHT AF! Also get some foot retention

Nice! Welcome to fixed gear. Agree with other posters about straps, chain tension, etc. A few tips: Get used to riding fixed for a few weeks before going nuts. Everyone forgets they're on a fixed at some point at first and it can be a bit jarring when you think you're about to coast and it doesn't happen! After you forget a few times and nearly wipe out you won't forget again. After you get comfortable, learn to skid so you can stop without brakes. Once you can confidently stop without brakes, remove your brakes. Fixed is all about simplicity IMO. :) Good luck and keep it up.

I really like the fact that you went for safety and went in an empty parking to try it out, when I got my first track bike I just went out of the store on it and rode back home

Literally just got mine n went to the street 😂 to be fair i take the road bike out regularly, but fixed is a different beast

Literally what I did I had just gotten my mantra out the shop and my lbs offered me a 50 dollar complete fixie and it ended up not fitting in the car so I put my bike in the car and bit the bullet riding the fixie home for the first time on public roads in a town with people who hate cyclists was absolutely my worst choice I went otb within my first 5 minutes of riding and it took me 3 times as long to get home but from that moment on I chased a fixie until that same lbs gave me a different one more fitting basically in a trade and I ended up with a safer starter fixie with brakes lmao

That "skipping n' giving" is due to the fact you have too much of a chain slack... bring your wheel further back. If needed shorten the chain. Too much of a chain slack can be dangerous. Enjoy the ride.

I am in the exact same situation as you. Figured it is time to convert my single speed to fixed. It is a Charge (altough the later, shittier aluminium version). Just ordered the parts 2 days ago. YT algorithm did a good job recommending your video!

I have a single speed too with a flip flop hub, i tried fixed gear for a week and now after I've changed it back to single speed, it's no longer as fun.

Growing up all bikes I ever had as a kid were fixed gear bikes lol I had to save up money when i got a job at 17 to finally get a bike that had a single gear or multiple gears so I can coast…I’m shocked people don’t experience fixed gear bikes lol

Those miche wheels are not meant to have brakes on them. You should put your old front wheel on and run your brakes on that.

it’s your chain you need to tighten it

Possibly skipping because its an old chain with a fresh cog but also it could be that your chain looks super saggy
