You do realise "Football," no matter the code, is called that because it's a game played on foot. It has nothing to do with kicking the ball. If games were named as a way to describe the way the game is played, then Soccer should be called Kickball. Or better yet, Diveball or Flopball.

We don’t have NFL - Australian Football is light years ahead of every other sport in Australia. Please don’t ever be misled by rugby fans, AFL has one of the world’s biggest crowd attendances and three times the participation numbers. They will tell you it’s bigger in QLD and NSW despite the AFL teams there having bigger crowds and memberships per team and growing rapidly.

@jsegal838516 күн бұрын
AFL players average 6'2'', more stamina than a soccer player and have better ball handling skills than an NFL player. They are probably the fittest and best conditions athletes in any team sport in the world. I've seen some comments that this or that NFL player would cream the Aussies if they ever got on the field. The NFL players do not have the stamina, explosive speed or the athleticism. They wouldn't get a start. Check out Mason Cox, the only guy from the USA to play AFL at the highest level. Pat McAfee a now retired NFL punter, has a good take on the AFL, the ex AFL players who changed your game and a very interesting view on Cox's journey into theA AFL
@tomoliver296116 күн бұрын
If NFL players had played AFL all their life ( with NFL current body types ) they destroy afl players for 5-10 minutes and then gas out. Athletically they are generally superior athletes and much more explosive than AFL players but I agree have nowhere near the stamina. But of course they would not compete having not grown up with AFL and although Mason plays it’s only due to his height. We will not see a player playing midfield that is American any time soon.

Australian Rules Football is the oldest football code in the world. The rules were written and codified in 1859, four years before soccer's first rules were written and codified. There is amateur level American football played in Australia but it ranks well behind in popularity to AFL (Australian Rules), NRL (Rugby League), Rugby Union and Soccer.

It is definitely the most popular sport in Australia. Biggest crowds by far, biggest TV ratings too. Soccer is a distant 4th behind Footy (AFL), and both rugbys, although it (soccer) is not far from overtaking rugby union. Being the sport with the 4th biggest average domestic crowds in the world should tell you something (the other 3 being NFL with a population 13x that of Australia), EPL and the Bundesliga). Footy was first codified in 1857, played in 1858. You can watch games on Sky Sports in the UK, season runs from early-mid March through to the last Saturday in September.

These are consummate speed athletes despite their size and skill. Their knowledge of kicking technique is unmatched in the world ... which is why they now dominate as college football punters in the USA. Half of the punters in the top college levels are now Australian. The Ray Guy Award for best college punter was won by Australians five years in a row. The Australians, with experience learned in AFL, are able to play as 'full contact' players in college (instead of the delicate flowers generally fielded for punting by America at both college and NFL level), and yet still punt the ball longer than Americans. The Australian takeover of college punting has changed the game, because the Australians' ability to hold the ball and move at an angle away from the rush still confident they can get a kick away when opponents get near them, allows them to delay the punt until the coverage players are well downfield ... giving no opportunity for a punt return. In addition, punt defending teams are no longer able to just pull back and set up the return, because the Australian ex-AFL punters, if they see no rush arriving, are perfectly capable of taking the ball and running for a first down.

Watch AFL explained video, then you will see that they play on a field bigger than a soccer field, with 18 on the field and 4 on the bench on each team, so 36 players on the field at once. The game is over 120 years old, older than any American sport.
@aplund16 күн бұрын
This is why many Australians get frustrated with the stuff that goes on in association football. They seem to go to ground easy and then magically get up fine. If players go down in AFL, it's rarely the case that they just like rolling around on the ground.

"They are very thin,is there a weight limit" Love that comment it is a huge field and they have to cover it all up to 12 miles a game so you cannot do that if you carry weight. Bigger guys are up to 7' and weight 220 lbs midfielders 6' 2 plus and weigh 180 lbs small forwards a bit less but they all have endurance even the umpires.This game is so much more than this video,very old,made to be difficult so no throwing just handball, running but limited by bouncing the ball every 15 meters. We have points as well as goals so a draw is rare. Watch 'this is AFL' and you will get a better handle. AFL is Australia's most popular sport followed by Rugby League, Cricket, Rugby Union and Soccer. League and Union are played in NSW and Queensland almost exclusively AFL in every state and cricket is the sport followed by all Aussies. AFL rules were set out in 1850's Melbourne and the first game ever played was at the MCG and where the grand final is played every year in front of 100,000 fans. Have fun. Mason Cox's "Don't believe in never" is worth watching.

It’s true they are not as big as NFL players and the play is continuous and the game goes for around 100 min. You have to have serious aerobic fitness to play this game. However they are very strong and some of the players are still very large. All players play offence and defence also with only 4 players in the bench so there is very little recovery time. NFL players will be gassed after 5 minutes of playing AFL.

It’s not that they are not as big as American footballers it’s that they are not as fat as American footballers. AFL footballers run somewhere between 12 and 20 km a game (8 and 12 miles) all this while playing constantly in 4 qtr lots, with only 10 minutes between the first and second qtrs and third and fourth qtrs, a twenty min break at half time. American footballers could not keep up with AFL players as the aerobic capacity is far greater in OZ.

A good number of these hits were not within the rules. You'll hear the whistle after as the umpire stops play and for some of them he's awarded not just a free kick, but also a 50 metre penalty against the infringing team. That's about 1/3rd of the ground. Some are fair, you're allowed to bump other players provided you do so in a way that doesn't contact them in the head, nor from the back. So a good "hip and shoulder" into the side or front on while contesting the ball, that's legitimate and just play on. But they are SO strict on concussions these days so in the modern era if you elect to bump and there's a potential for head contact, it's a free, umpire reports the incident, and it's debated at the match review or tribunal as to whether there is a suspension. Oh and players taken off the field with a concussion are an automatic 1 game sit out next week as well, so if that happens then it is an even worse look for the bumping player.
@user-bf8ud9vt5b16 күн бұрын
These are actually pretty soft. There's compilations of much bigger hits. Sometimes deliberate or reckless, but often just accidental collisions. The players really are putting their body on the line for the team.

@Sour84-t9y In a way, I do agree with you. Not about the protection, but as a promotion or first-time introduction to what a great spectical this game is, then this video, highlighting mostly illegal hits, is not a good place to start. There are better videos out there that explain the rules & highlight the athleticism. As far as protection goes, NFL style hard helmets & padding just wouldn't be practical in AFL. I am however a big fan of the soft helmets you'll see some players wearing. Particularly for children.
