Keep that chunk of silicone from the first pour that didn't make a mold. You can cut it up and use it to fill space in a mold. Thus saving fresh silicone and keeping your costs down. The same for worn out silicone molds that won't cast decently anymore.

Great work, you're making a lot of progress very quickly. If you have an FDM 3d printer you can make very close fitting mold boxes. PLA works great for this. I print a single shape with maybe 1/2" of space around the item for silicone, then I cut the mold box off with a cutting wheel on a Dremel tool after the silicone sets. When I go to cast in that mold I use elastics to hold the mold box together. That gives me even pressure on all sides and makes sure the cast doesn't deform. I've only been casting a couple years but yeah there's a lot to learn and mistakes are expensive. I prefer injecting the resin with a very large (250ml) syringe, it can be cleaned with acetone before the resin hardens and reused many times. I also find it's easier to work with a thicker resin like epoxy vs urethane. Also you will want to create some kind of reservoir on the fill spout as the resin will contract slightly as it cures and if you don't have excess resin to pull in you will get a void.

Ace vid mate! I know the road bumps can be a bit disheartening sometimes but you’ve had some great results there for a first time, especially considering the complexity of the figures. That tool I use to prise the moulds open while cutting is called a ‘surgical retractor’ if you decide to pick one up. Also: keep hold of that chunk of silicone that set before you could use it. You can chop it into chunks and add them into a new mould to bulk it up and save on silicone so it won’t go to waste 💪

Thankyou very much for your honest videos. I think there is a lot for people to learn from you about how to deal with the feelings of overwhelming frustration and how to come back and stay motivated after things dont work out. Watching someone like you, who I have a great deal of respect for, battling with the same kind of emotions and thoughts that I do is a great help.

Also, never beat yourself up for mistakes while making anything. That's how you learn. That's how those "experts" that you mention learned. And failed molds can be recycled. And failed castings can be made into weird fun sculptures for the shop. Sculptures that every time to see them remind you of your mistakes and what not to do in the future. You're making huge strides here and doing it while filming yourself. That's pretty insane. Just keep doing it and get a little better each time.

Those days were anything but a write off, loads learned to turn you into one of the premier indy toy makers out there. It's amazing watching the journey with you. The Monster cans are a great idea, I wouldn't write them off just yet. How about cutting down the side top to bottom then "tighten" the can up a bit with some tape? You could then wrap the mold with the can when casting to help the mold hold it's shape.

Like how you make your videos even showing the mistakes instead of just what went right. A lot of videos in youtube falsely show that things are easy (like mini painting, mixing silicon etc) but these are challenging tasks and with enough practice it works. Kudos that you showed the whole process, more support to you!

Oh man, mold making and all that is hardcore. I tried my hand at it a few times nearly a decade ago now for some TTB customs and some collabs for Sucklord's 2016 gallery show in Tokyo. Without the help of a friend, I would have given up after the first two attempts. Then after having a great run of luck, all it took was one bad pour to discourage me again. Now that I'm often with Ken, I've been learning more and more about things. Definitely wanted to document his mold making process for mini figures - but damn man, this was an EPIC video. You've got drive like THE TERMINATOR.

If you are 3d printing the prototype that you are gong to make the mold from, can't you just print a seemline on to the prototype. By adding a flange along the desired seam line and giving it an almost 0 sized atachment point (like a traditional support), you could create natural cleavage in the silicone that would be easier to cut towards when de-molding. I guess the flange will have to have a few solid atachment points to hold it in place, but Im sure they could be hidden with a bit of creativity.

Seems like you learned *a lot* of good lessons just from this one multi-day session indeed :) Somebody might have told you this, but that piece of cured silicon that «died» before you could degausse it, if you cut it into small chunks you can then use them to pad out new molds, so you don’t need to use as much fresh silicone for the next molds :) Great way of saving on materials :) I mentioned a channel you should check out on the previous video on this, that guy has some really good videos on making those air vents and where to place them also :)

You can get 1:1 silicone that also cures in like 30 minutes to an hour if you don’t want to wait. SmoothOn 20t is a good one that’s clear so you can see when you’re filling it with resin. Also if you used a small syringe for the resin you can get it into those small feet holes faster and the pressure would help with bubbles.

Smaller molds and casts are actually alot harder than doing a larger figure. A few tips for doing the 2 part molds. Lego is great for making the walls for pouring your silicon into, and it's infinitely reusable. You want a minimum of 10mm of silicon all the way round what your casting, fill any large voids with old cut up molds to save on the silicon. I assume monster clay is sulphur free? I've never used it, but know silicon won't mold properly if there is alot of sulphur present. Make sure you set your keys really well when doing the first half, however many you think will be enough, just double it, helps alot lining the 2 halves up later for casting. A technique I heard about but never tried was for things with alot of tiny details, dusting the mold with talc can help draw rising into tiny areas where you may get air bubbles. With larger molds, you can literally burp them or rotomold them to force the resin into undercuts. Then if you want to make them solid fill then up with more resin once the detail layer has set.

This is why even if I don't care for the design of a homemade toy, I give the maker all the respect in the world, because it's so hard just to get all the gear, learn how to use it, then work out the kinks. If it was easy, we'd all be doing it.

Awesome video! I can't even imagine doing all this while still recording a professional grade video all alone, great stuff man! It feels like I'm looking at myself sometimes haha, I'm struggling with exactly the same things. And I went on trying to cast with actual rubber for a flexible keshi feeling, damn it's difficult to handle the thing! I recommend to only try those with more experience. I did got couple of awesome results in the end that made me quite happy, but damn I wasted a lot of material 😅I also think you will enjoy more and get better results with a two-part mold for now, even if they give more work. What I'm trying to do is going for faster and smaller one-part molds for testing/prototyping with different resins, colorants, etc. and to practice cutting the mold. And once I'm happy with the model/resin/colorant/etc. I move for a larger, more detailed and carefully made two-part mold to cast it several times.

You're making solid progress! Molding and Casting is a complex skill, there are a couple great books that may help on your journey. "The Prop Builder's Molding & Casting Handbook" by Thurston James and "Pop Sculpture" by Tim Bruckner A great tool to have when doing this cut style mold is a set of "retractors" surgical tool that holds the mold open as you cut.
