We called all the little ones smolts, even though that was probably more of a salmon term. Like anything else once you get a system down you don't lose many fish. We always used eagle claw wide bend hooks, I can not tell you why, but they worked best by far. I've had 16 for 16 days, don't get me wrong I've had days I could not buy a smolt. Love the steelies. Lots of different baits to try. I got lazy as I got experienced and would just bring a tub of waxies. Havn't tangled in years with them but great memories. BTW you are an outstanding fisherman.

Good job man!! No bobber either just an egg sac and some split shots. Does work! Maybe the easiest way to catch them but could get snagged here and there. Like that section! Ssshhh... Lol i have no idea where that is?.. Lol Not a ton of good spots on the salmon river with good fish and few people. But theirs a few. I've had two trips in a row with nothing before, so really good day for you! Fish on!!
@robertgerber25337 жыл бұрын
Yeah Chris, that's not a bad day in steelhead fishing. The fish look small this year. That last one you got is usually the average size. Those small ones Elias was talking about were probably a release from the hatchery above the first fly zone. I ran into those one yer in the fly zone. The hatchery in Altmar is a cool place to visit while you are up there. you can see how the returning fish are corralled to go into the hatchery and processed. Also alot of history about the fishery

Lol the Leo pronunciation of rainbow trout! I fished for steelhead my first time this year too, only had fished small creeks for smaller stocked/wild trout beforehand. Techniques seemed very similar but just like you said, MANY drifts and not a ton of bites. Super fun fish to target! Pink worm was clutch for me too, I wacky rigged it on a trout magnet head.

You should try a drift boat trip. You get to cover a lot of water and have an experienced guide to tell you where to fish. My dad does it and I’m working on becoming a guide. Also you should try center pinning it’s super fun and challenging.

I have never fished for steelhead before but it sure does look interesting. From what i can gather, These are just bigger and tougher rainbow trouts. In my stocked stream you can catch anything from 1-5LB rainbows and i have and they're just simply beautiful fish. For a first time steelhead angler you did awesome and i hope to see you keep at it. Tight lines buddy!

Talking about tough day, you haven't seen tough day up there yet. You actually did very well. I've been going up there for 10 years and if your catching 1 or 2 fish a day your doing good. Last time I went up there I got skunked. Three days fishing and nothing. First time that's happened. Then there are times when I go up i catch them all in one day and none the rest of the days. I I've learn you have to diversify your fishing methods and not just rely one the salmon river. If the salmon river is too high or too low or has too much fishing pressure you have to try other tribs or you'll get skunked more often then not.
