I love your videos and I love the Maule! Tell your buddy that if he wants to avoid the tailwheel shimmy, don’t be so aggressive on the up elevator after touchdown. He’s really hauling back on it while he’s still going pretty fast, and that’s pushing down really hard on the tail. That downforce will drive the axis of the tailwheel pivot way forward of vertical, and ANY tailwheel will shimmy with that geometry, like a loose wheel on a shopping cart. Tell him to ease up on it… just let the tailwheel settle, don’t pin it so much. It’ll steer a lot better if it isn’t shimmying! If that doesn’t help, make sure the pivot axis is vertical or a little aft of vertical at rest. I.E., the leaf springs haven’t sagged at all. If that still doesn’t do it, he may need to take some slack out of those chains. Signed, a guy who’s spent a lot of time chasing tailwheel shimmies!

You simply are not used to a vernier throttle. Actually they are in many airplanes, and I LOVE it! The silver middle button goes to the palm of my hand. And I love to TWIST the throttle, for fine tuning!!
@Bananasssssssss8 ай бұрын
Yeah, I think I’m just used to the Cub. Towards the end I quickly got used to it
@davidspeyers57408 ай бұрын
For setting cruise power and fine adjustments I would agree with you, however they can be hard to use, especially for primary students.
@Kiwi0Six8 ай бұрын
Haha. I understand the frustration but I grew up with a vernier throttle so I was getting into trouble accidentally tightening the friction lock on the throttles of my current planes. I’m used to it now, but I miss the fine adjustment with the vernier. (I understand the vernier is a real pain when you need to jockey in formation, but I haven’t done that in decades.)

Added a Vernier Throttle and Mixture to my 1971 M4-220 and Love 'em. Makes fine-tuning easy. ^v^
@fudogwhisperer35905 күн бұрын
My 1957 c172 had a throttle like that. I liked it when I got my instrument training, you could really dial in the throttle because you could fine tune it by twisting it. I used the heel of my hand to adjust it

Yeah I actually have heard that once familiar with it, it’s really nice. I guess I’m just not used to it

Flying from the right seat is so much different but better you can learn also because of how much forgiving it is to landing on a grass runway makes it easier to rolling it on like butter and your directional control and feet alive.

An FBO had a tri-gear and a taildragger version for lessons and rental. I tried getting my tailwheel endorsement there. What a beast. The one I flew was an accident waiting to happen. I figure there must have been something wrong with it since otherwise everyone's lauding these planes as sensational. Went somewhere else for the signoff and to my knowledge no one else checked out to rent it either. I have since checked out in a J-3, Super Cub, Super Decathlon, Citabria, Husky, Zlin, oh and a Stearman, I found them to be pussycats all.

I own an M7/9 and use full flap every time to land as slow as possible. These Maule's like to be slow, the landings are butter if you can ballast the plane aft and land slow. Also, we put a friction lock throttle in... hate that button style.
