Paul McDermott and Tim (Ferguson? I think) went on to host comedic TV shows. I thought this hot a little repetitive towards the end, and the production values were way too high for a punk song, but it was never meant to be serious!

They always take me back to the early years of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival circa '87. So much talent came from this period.

I got to see the Dougies during my University years in the late 80's. They were part of the new wave of alternative Australian comedy, which I believe coincided with the development of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Scared Weird Little Guys, Lano and Woodley, The D-Generation, The Comedy Company, Fast Forward and others were part of this wave. It was a great time and we all had a good laugh. Painters & Dockers also thrived in the spirit of that time period. I think 'Hippy' is just a good example of their work, and was a bit of a laugh at the time. Nothing to take seriously. 🐕 I would like to make a request and dedicate it to Robbo. Chris Franklin's ''Bloke''. 😉

being an old hippy didn't stop me from liking this song back in the early 90's. there was a lot of b/s that came with the hippy culture and idiots that tuned in and permanently copped out. this isn't a punk band. it's a comedy musical trio most popular in australia and quite successful in the uk too. singer tim ferguson had to quit during their height due to multiple sclerosis.

lol... I'm back in 1989 when I hear this.. I had two posters of these guys on my wall and had been to about 5 of their gigs by 1990.. this is a better example of their attitude and energy rather than their dialogue.... These guys were from Canberra and were the product of campus humour and Australian alternative comedy and were perfect for Melbourne and the thriving comedy scene here...

DAAS were the new hip guys of the Aussie comedy scene in the late 80's.. Their young-good looks even got them on a few TV commercials aimed towards the teen market.. Then they started singing ''I Fuck Dogs'' and became popular with a very different audience. lol Great times.. I think I still have the 1990 album ''D.A.A.S Icon'' on vinyl.

These guys were great live. When they were at university in Canberra, they used to busk around Canberra. Never meant to be a rock/pop band, rather comedic musicians. This song is so much more stripped down live and better in my opinion. Thank you for the reaction.

The vocalist here is Tim Ferguson. He's the son of an ABC journalist. One of the guys from Painters And Dockers is the brother of a journalist too. They're from clever stock.

It's satire people. The Doug Anthony Allstars were really funny, and their stuff was pretty outrageous and hard-hitting in it's day. They broke up around 1994, sadly due to Tim Fergusson being diagnosed with MS - although this wasn't made public until some years later.

This was originally aired as part of a live Television comedy performance with funny stories, and humorous euphemisms about hippies. They were iconoclasts, which had to older Australians being offended, which in turn appealed to youth culture of the time. T act always included music. The production music video doesn't catch the raw energy of their live performances. That original performance can still be found on youtube if you include "The Big Gig", and the name of the act in the search box. Their popularity led to the production of a studio album.

Always an entertaining bunch, and something of their time. They did have success on their own as hosts in mostly television and had something of a reunion a couple of years ago. Sadly, the main vocalist on this track, Tim Fergusson, is now confined to a wheelchair but hasn't slowed down. DAAS also had their own show called DAAS Kapital (that's their intellectual slant) which along with the three DAAS boys also starred Flacco, Michael Petroni, Bob Downe and Khym Lam. Try ''Throw Your Arms Around Me'' (not a comedy, but a cover of a H & C song) ''Heard It Through The Grape Vine'' (same terms as ''Throw Your Arms'') ''I F*ck Dogs'' (definitely not a confessional number.. it's comedy!) DAAS: The Big Gig - Dead Elvis is also pretty good. They made their way to the UK, did pretty well there in the early 90's. the lead singer struggled with MS and kept it a secret until it all tumbled down for him and co... They split and went on to success in the TV field...

I loved The Doug Anthony Allstars during my years at university. I attended a couple of tapings of a TV comedy show called 'The Big Gig', which was shot at ABC's Ripponlea studios (where 'Countdown' was shot) and DAAS were the highlight of the show. They were edgy, but they executed their distasteful brand of comedy and performance with excellent timing and energy. Yeah, whilst I enjoyed the DAAS when they were popular I’m flummoxed at the idea of this song being put forward as something that you’d want to react to. I’m sure there’s lots of explanations n the comments, but this was really something that you had to live through. It’s like an inside joke. There’s no way I could expect anything but bewilderment arising from someone from another country experiencing this so many decades after it came out.

Yeah, it's just comedy. They were a favourite of the guest performers on a show called Big gig and later, Paul McDermott, the short one, hosted a great show called sideshow. Both shows were pretty similar, although sideshow used to have more circus performances and gave rise to heaps of new artists like the Umbilical brothers.

That was good. I wouldn't classify it as punk though especially with the late 80s drum beat and the horns at the end. Kind of a mix between the Tubes and the Cardiacs. The UK had it's own comedic band- Alberto Y Los Trio Paranois. Check out Gobbing on Life from 77. Back to Aus - let's have something from the Cosmic Pyschos' Self Totalled album please. I was a genuine full time hippy in the late 60's until I saw my friends abusing returning soldiers from Vietnam - my brother being one of them (returning soldier). The love beads were eventually cut off and I went all denim and decided my hippy friends can get lost (which some of them did). I've taken no offense to this song nor The Doug Anthony Allstars. I pay no mind to people that decide to adopt so-called lifestyle of hippies; especially after 1975.

First time I'm hearing this but not first time I hear of DAAS. They got some press here in the UK many moons ago, so before I clicked I was wondering where I heard that name and then those faces made me think aah yeah. Objectively, if I didnt know DAAS I'd still see a funny comedy group with punk edge and a funny song. I never liked the hippies because a lot of them deflected from serious issues and I found John Lennon to be irritating with his ''love is the answer'' offering .. If I heard this song in 1990 I would have been on the floor laughing.. its catchy, its energetic, its attitude, it's manic...

Edit: Not that your dad fits this description. They're not saying that they want to spill the blood of good Samaritans. They're targeting hippies, who I had found to be disdainful. I get wanting peace and love and I do not condone violence personally, but I never met a hippy that actually liked. I think they're pretty much the same where ever you go, to be frank. D.A.A.S were satirists and iconoclasts and were perfect for someone like me raised with the burden of Catholicism.

Maybe this would be best experienced in Australia in the late 80s/early 90's.. or the University crowds and aficionados of Alternative comedy. It's hard to be in the heads of people that's new to this, including the two of you, because stuff like this was in our (Australian) culture since the early 80's.. I never chuckled at this, but I wasn't ever repulsed nor disgusted by it.. I was still ploughing my way through university in Melbourne and frequenting comedy events like the Melbourne Comedy Festival and these guys were the shit at that time. They had their own unique brand of physical comedy and social commentary... A big influence on people like Chaser's War On Everything.

I think the tune would make sense within the context of one of their sketches. There was a sentiment that came with punk about destroying the hippies and DAAS just simply took that P.O.V to the extreme. The coda was aping the ending of The Beatles' ''I Am The Walrus'' and Russell Morris' ''The Real Thing''.

The title should give a clue as to what you're in for. Best viewed when you're in a less sensitive mood. The hippies and the late 60's counterculture changed a lot of things for the better, but there were a lot of slackers and freeloaders; not to mention dipshits that spat at returning soldiers and forced their way into festivals like the Isle of Wight 1970. I dig DAAS's annoyance with hippies. I don't mean to be personal, but this clearly caught you at a bad time.
