Second band I ever saw live (first was The Angelic Upstarts who were from my home town). Skids rocked the house, literally. They had the whole of a packed, Newcastle City Hall, dancing. I was up on the balcony, it shook so much I thought it was going to collapse. Literally felt like they were going to bring the house down.

LOVE this band... and THANK YOU for doing SKIDS! Some of their great songs: "A WOMEN IN WINTER," "THE SAINTS ARE COMING," "HURRY ON BOYS," and "CIRCUS GAMES." Cheers to you and the people who recommended this!! One of Scotland's finest! Some other great Scottish bands you might want to check out: THE DELGADOS: "Bits Of Bone," "The City Consumes Us," "Coming In From The Cold" "The Light Before We Land" are all brilliant songs. FRIGHTENED RABBIT: "Swim Until You Can't See Land," "Things," "State Hospital" (Their powerful music, much like The Delgados, hits you right in the soul). Cheers!

Anthemic and very memorable, great riff provided by the sadly late but great Stuart Adamson, i must confess however, ive never had a clue what Richard Jobson was singing apart from into the valley, but this is perhaps due to my lack of understanding the Scottish language, thanks for translating it into Canadian!

As a 10 year old i was obsessed by this song and lyrics, but you couldn't just look them up on the internet like today. I can still remember being so happy to find a copy of "Record Mirror" at a newsagents with lyrics in. When you actually know what he's saying they're not that difficult to understand and I can still remember them all over 40 years later.

Oh what joy it was to be alive and at the right age to fully appreciate the "Punk New Wave music explosion " (1976/80 approx) . So much great music and bands from the Sex Pistols to Joy Division from the Clash to Magazine from the Skids to The Only Ones . Not forgetting the Ruts, Siouxsie, The Damned, The Cure, The Fall etc etc . ps The Skids have been playin live again recently saw them play the Robin 2 in Bilston in 2022 , and have tickets to see them again in June. Jobson was on fore and hilarious with a great fund of stories from back in the day. rip Stuart Adamson. The Band have 2 extra guitarists doing what he did on his own !

There was a tv commercial, possibly for cassette tapes, which used the misheard lyrics of this song to comic effect. The Skids were definitely one of the better bands to hit the singles chart during that era, although I think there were tensions within that quickly brought the band to an end, with Richard Jobson becoming a performance poet, tv presenter and general mouth on legs. Other Scottish bands: The Rezillos, The Tourists, Altered Images.

Pop punk sort of sound - the Skids were one of those probably slightly-under-rated bands of the late 70s. Not quite top rated IMO but this is a bit of an anthem. Contrary to opinion, most British punk bands of the 70s didn't look like classic punks - except the Pistols, Damned, Siousxie and the Banshees, X-Ray Spex, and Generation X - think the Clash, Jam, Stranglers, Buzzcocks, Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers, Ruts, 999 (who I hope you will take a look at - 'Emergency' for starters then 'Wild Sun' perhaps), Vibrators, Magazine,, Angelic Upstarts, XTC, Slaughter and the Dogs, The Fall, Neon Hearts etc - all looked quite normal dress-wise but all were a key part of the 70s British punk scene.

The lead singer here is, Richard Jobson, who later became known as a, writer, director, producer, presenter and actor. The Skids: Scotland’s greatest band. Stuart Adamson: punk’s greatest guitarist. Richard Johnson: punk’s most likeable frontman. When I saw this on Top of the Pops as an eight year old it changed my musical life. It was my gateway drug for adrenaline charged two to three minute songs which I later learned what punk/new wave was all about. It’s actually an anti-song with the lyrics written by Jobson inspired by Tennyson’s “Charge of the Light Brigade” and his damaged friends who had returned broken men from fighting in Northern Ireland. How do I know this? Certainly not from the indecipherable lyrics! Jobson has made it clear since but few people, if anyone, realised at the time!

Thanks for the namecheck but no, no, no - you can NOT look up the lyrics for Into The Valley. Whatever you hear is correct: Ahoy, ahoy - Pants in the sky; Ahoy, ahoy - Barman and sugar; Ahoy, ahoy - Asleep at a barstoool; Ahoy, ahoy - long may he lay That's what I hear and that is, therefore, correct. Skids were brilliant, so much energy, great guitarist in Stuart Adamson (later Big Country), stonking rhythm section in Tom Kellichan and William Simpson (at this point) and bat-poop crazy Richard 'Jobbo' Jobson on vocals. Great songs - there's also Saints Are Coming (yes, that one, but better), Sweet Suburbia, Working for the Yankee Dollar, Masquerade, Charade and loads more. Sadly, Jobbo's high kicks aren't so prominent on this video, see the TOTP performance for that.

Dunfermline’s finest ! It’s no surprise you picked up on the singers unintelligible lyrics - Jobson was FAMOUS for it , annoyingly so ! Can I recommend The Saints are coming ? Fir a wee band from the East coast of Scotland the boys did well and as others have pointed out the really talented 2 went on to form Big Country which actually eclipsed the Skids ( In a Big Country was fabulous ).. sadly the super talented guitarist n vocalist Stuart Adamson shocked the music industry when he took his own life 😢… but if you want to know the legacy he and they left behind , I was watching the gig for the Benefit fir New Orleans after Katrina destroyed it and one of my fav bands Green Day along with those perennial auld frauds U2 did a STUNNING version of The Saints are coming which I would be delighted if you would consider for “ Who did it better ? “ it’s also used as the football anthem for Southampton in England AND St Johnston in Scotland- The Skids , proud sons of Scotland and fav of yours truly - cheers for this C n C 🙏 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Gaisers in Scotland isnt the same as geezers btw 👀.. if it’s what I think it is , Gaisers or Guisers more likely came from Mary of Guise former Queen of Scotland and mother of Mary Queen of Scot’s . Pronounced Guy-zers, nowadays describes the activity of going round the streets n houses on Halloween ( NOT trick or treat , that a North American thing ) performing songs or jokes etc in exchange for sweets , fruit , chocolate , money etc … but I’m sad to say the trick or treat thing is spreading 😡….
