In this video we're listening to The Undertones. We watched a documentary for our Patreon channel on John Peel's record box, and the story of how John had asked that this song be played at his funeral came up. Naturally, we had to hear it front to back after that. So, this should be quite interesting. We can't wait! Enjoy!

I'm so glad to learn that the thermal paste worked! This is a great track by this band. John Peel was so important in the British underground music scene, he championed bands that no one else would, and he'd give any band a chance regardless of genre, his late night music show was mandatory listening.

It’s hard to understand the impact John Peel had on music particularly late 70’s/80’s for me his show was unmissable and I found some great bands through him, everyone knows how much he loved this song he asked for “teenage dreams so hard to beat” engraved on his headstone, really enjoyed your reaction

John Peel was massive for me as a teenager in the 90s. When he passed, me and my friends got suitably drunk in his honour. Also my friend once pinched his bum at all tomorrow’s parties. Legend gone too soon

On John Peels' birthday party, the band were wondering what gift they could give him. They decided to give him the original handwritten lyrics of the song complete with crossings out and alterations and frame if for him. Being an emotional man, when they gave him it, he said ''I had to go inside for a while to compose myself, it was the perfect gift''

The Undertones certainly had some great tunes, playing the kind of punk that had a broader appeal than most bands of the genre, but still with that raw edge. If you do like the upbeat punk sound though, a modern favourite of mine are Rumkicks, a female punk band from Korea. This is their song "Drinking Every Day" kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXzZkqKwr910qpI which is in English, despite them not being fully fluent in English.

Yay , Ace ! How this great band from Derry rose to fame despite the "Troubles " in NI is well shown on many TV documentrys . The Movie "Good Vibrations " tells the story of a Record shop owner in Belfast who promoted a few bands ,during the 70 s , the " Undertones" were one of the success stories ! and the Journey it took to get the great John Peel to give them a listen ! Peely played Teenage Kicks twice on his Radio Show . This had never been done before ! Great Band , that Movie is a must See !!! Cheers ! Great blast from the Past ..

Yup , John Peel single handedly made the Undertones stars, his championing of this track and the band brought these toe rags from Derry in NI to everyone’s living rooms their first appearance with this song on TOTP is sensational, they are SO thrilled to be on the telly and it’s so refreshing . It’s just a rock n roll track with youthful new wave energy , what’s not to like - loads of other bangers from this band to come hopefully? Love this song, to me it's perfect Punk Pop with Feargals distinctive voice. The Undertones were from Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland and largely avoided singing about the 'Troubles' unlike Stiff Little Fingers (from Belfast) who approached it head on. I love both bands and was fortunate to see them both live in their early days. The Undertones had several hits - 'My perfect Cousin', 'Jimmy Jimmy', 'Here comes the summer'. Their sound matured with the excellent third album 'Positive touch' with songs like 'Julie Ocean', 'Positive touch', 'When Saturday comes' and 'It's going to happen'. Cheers

Yep, the Undertones wete like the Irish version of Buzzcocks - perfect punk pop. Check out My Perfect Cousin of I've Got Your Number. The grat thing about John Peel was that his musical taste got more exteme as he aged - i remember thinking, cripes, this band Big Black (Steve Albini) are hard to listen but Peel kept on playing them. We have only got Radio6 in the UK these days and it is a much paler version of Peel.

I wondered if we might get something from the John Peel Record Box doc! A timeless classic, there will always be teenagers, there will always be hormones, this song will live forever. Feargal Sharkey had a dubious solo career, and the some of rest of the band became, That Petrol Emotion. They did some good stuff, like, Big Decision. Big Stick doing Drag Racing is on that documentary iirc, its a lot of fun!

Not watching this one. While John Peel was still alive, BBC2 did a tribute night to him for his 60th birthday, Somebody obviously thought it was clever to use this as "stings" over and over again thoughout the night.
