I have watched all 4 of your vids regarding boat buying and owning. I'm in my late 50's with sound finances, work part-time and have another income and was thinking about an insore boat for me and the wife and some fishing. Your video's are simple to understand, cover everything and very sobering! Like many I imagine, I was looking at £15k to buy a 20ft and get it ready for use. I'm now looking at half that and 5-7ft less boat! Phil, your channel will grow my friend. Thank god I saw this before I made firm plans or I would get into trouble very quickly (and divorced probably!). Great series, now I'll look at your fishing video. I've obviously subscribed. Cheers mate.

Hi , thanks a lot for the comments and encouragement. Your feedback makes it all worthwhile sharing my adventures. Many years ago I had a Colvic Seaworker 22 footer. Great sea worthy boats. But, I had her on a pontoon berth all year. The costs were huge and every time we had a storm I couldn't sleep a wink wondering how those mooring lines were doing. Flash forward many years and I realise that having a smaller trailerable boat opens up many opportunities and if you don't use the boat much there's no cost to have it sat in the garage. Personally I love my little Coastliner, others prefer bigger boats. Hopefully you find what works for you. Check out the Cornwall Fishing Falmouth videos I did last June. There will be another series in 2024. Cheers Phil

When you go to collect your Coastliner check the tyres and bearings before you tow her home. It's worth taking a spare wheel and some tools as a just in case. Also get a new ratchet strap - all adds to piece of mind for the journey home.

Thanks James. I learnt my trailer skills as a teenager reversing the family 6x4 camping trailer on campsites. The longer the trailer the easier it is to correct before it jack knifes.

Great info Phil. With my boat, the original trailer didn't have a weight plate on it, so when I replaced the trailer, I took it all up my local sand and gravel supplier, for 2 cans of beer they let me put it in their weighbridge and gave me a certificate for the weight. I made sure the boat was full of fuel and had most things in that I would usually carry. I now know it weighs 1800kgs all in and my van and trailer max are both 2000kgs. So if I get stopped, at best I can prove it's under the max weight, and worst that I have been responsible in my preparation.

There was a change in uk law a few years back, that allows you to tow a trailer with a full licence. If you got your licence after 1 jan 1997, you can now tow a trailer that weighs up to 3,500kg MAM. Before 1 jan 1997 you are allowed drive a vehicle and trailer with a combined weight of up to 8,250kg MAM. From the weights your quoting, pretty much anyone with a decent towing vehicle could legally tow a Coastliner

Thanks for watching and the update on the 'legal' bit. That's good news for anyone who is looking to get a small fishing boat like the Orkney Coastliner. I'm looking forward to seeing what improvement the larger wheels make to the way the trailer tows. Thanks for your input 👍

Hi Jamie, glad that you have found the videos interesting and helpful. Ask as many questions as you like. It's worth travelling to get the right boat although a few seem to turn up around Lomond or Ayrshire area. There's and email and Instagram link in the about section. Phil

Always check your wheel bearings specially when the boat is in and out of water.

Agreed. I have the bearing buddies fitted which really helps. The other thing is always fit top quality bearings as they last way longer than the basic ones.
