The reason he managed to do really well even though he hasn’t done much watercolour, is because he already knows the ins and outs of art in general, like contrast and colour, yadayada. And also going over the basics of watercolour, now knows somewhat how to achieve the effects he wants. This is why your art teachers are constantly yelling about learning the basics, so you can use those skills in any piece you want.

Norajousama + ! This happened to me once in class while trying pastels for the first time, and everyone was annoyed that I could pick the pace with those so quickly. I guess when you are used to do art and try other medium, you already have the basic knowledge and just need to get used to the new tools. Like wearing new soccer shoes when you already know how to play the sport!

Same. I drew a piece I was really proud of in tonal pencil but that was only because I was used to shading and the gradients. I prefer to draw in black and white to see the gradients easier but I’m working on a piece in pastel chalks and everyone is surprised how I can work it so well, I just have a basic understanding of my proportions, blending, and gradients and I know when it’s appropriate to use other items to blend (I’m using a paper towel to blend as it works into the texture neatly)

To all else in the comments: he is an artist. He knows how to use contrast, shape and color already. And practicing with the color schemes and individual colors before a piece is a really great thing to do to get your feet on the ground with a new medium. (Also using skillshare to see professionals giving tips they may not have learned until they had years of experience, that's a really great option as well, and it doesnt have to be skillshare, it can be something on KZbin. I've seen a lot of great tutorials with mediums on here and I know you all have access to it) ps fairy jazza is beautiful

Jazzas an experienced artist, he’s been drawing for a really long time. Yes he is a noob with watercolors but he knows how to deal with colors, shapes, backgrounds and foregrounds and so on. Well, I clicked on the channel, hoping to find some good art, but no. Just some random playlists. But I’m sure if you keep at it, you’ll find something you’re good at. Talent doesn’t come naturally. With the tube paints you squeeze them in and let them dry. After they dry you can add water and use them like those chalk base cheap water pallet and getting way better saturation

I suggest giving watercolor pencils a try, they're a neat midground between the kind of drawing you're used to and a painty style. You get all of the control of a pencil, but with that smooth, flowy blending you'd expect from waters.

Honestly, don't ever underestimate dollar store paint lol. I remember that when I was in art class in high school, most of my classmates ordered these expensive watercolours that my school provided. I didn't order any because I didn't want to pay the expensive price for it. They were all like, "You didn't order any?" and jokingly mocked me when I told them I was just gonna buy dollarstore watercolour paints. And as I said, I ended up using the dollarstore watercolours (A similar one of the rectangular box that Jazza has), for our watercolour assignment. When we got our marks back, I found that I aced it. My mark was 100% and I scored higher than the majority of the class. They may have gotten nice, expensive paints, but did they have the talent? Naw lmao XD

Hi Jazza, the reason why the waxy watercolours weren’t working as well is because you need to put water on them first to reactive them. Most likely, the “kids” watercolour is using dyes instead of pigments which is usually more vibrant but less lightfast and behaves differently. Hope this helped :) Some pigments are also heavier than others, hence why some watercolour paints are called granulating, the heavier pigment will sink to the bottom of the page in clumps creating granulation

Watercolor over tight pencil work has to be my favorite media to play with, and it was so wonderful to see you embrace one of my favorite media and really try to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the tubes vs pans, and the different types of pan. I tend to work from the waxier pans more often than not, but have also played with tube watercolors in much the same way that I play with acrylics, and found them very enjoyable to work in such a way. I am generally less fond of the harder pans, preferring the rougher layering of texture that the waxier pans provide to the smooth blending of the hard pans.

The hard colors in the pans are the same product as the tubes (they're called cakes or caked watercolor). It's just placed in the wells and dried. And the cheaper tray watercolor may have an incredibly smooth appearance, but overtime the color will fade and fall away because of how fine they are. You can make your own watercolor cakes by putting the tube watercolor on a pallet and letting them dry. This turned out wonderfully and I love your willingness to try new things :) much love!!

I’m sure others have said this, given the number of comments and it being 2 years since this video was made, but... in case no one did... Just a tip, Jazza... You generally don’t use the white watercolor. The white of the paper is preserved as the highlights, and you work in layers from light to dark. The squares are called pans. The brushes you use make a difference, as certain types hold more water in the bristles than others. Spritz some water on the paints to “activate” them before working, it can help a bit. But omg for your first try, your piece came out amazing!

Try masking fluid. You can get it in a pen form or in a bottle with a dipping nib for larger areas.

For the "waxy" ones you should spray them with a bit of water at first, it will "melt" the wax and making it easier to work with and the colours more vibrant

I'm a watercolour artist, the dry kiddish watercolours are called watercolour cakes or tablets. The waxy ones are called watercolour pans. Though, for some, cake tablet and pan are synonymous and refer broadly to the wet-to-activate style of them. The reason tablet watercolour applies smoothly like that is because it actually sits on top of the paper rather than soaking in. This means that its not lightfast, that it is prone to being scratched off or marked and that it has something of an undesirable powdery texture. Of course, none of those things really matter to someone who is just beginning to experiment in the medium!

I personally use pans in windsor and newton professional pan watercolours. I tend to find that with cheaper watercolours, when theyre diluted, they appear muddy and dull. Desaturated rather than brightened. Using these I can use pastel colours (I work mostly in blues and pinks) that are still vibrant and captivating.

I'm not quite sure how to phrase it! I think, for career artists, it is best to get the professional line because the colours are pretty much guaranteed to stay how you painted them forever, unless you spill bleach on the paper. With the cheaper ones, as I said with the watercolour tablets, they can be scratched or marked. They can fade over time. I believe the cotman line is decently lightfast, so long as theyre not in an area that receives a lot of harsh sunlight. Theyre also decently transparent and pigmented (transparent meaning they don't influence darker paints if applied on top, pigmented meaning you can still get nice vibrant colours with high amounts of water. For example, mixing a hot pink with water results in a bright hot pink rather than a dusky rose as would happen with these tablet watercolours). So. I guess what I'm trying to say is theyre very good, theyre a good investment for a majority of artists. Unless you're a career artist and you want to be damn sure that a painting you sell is going to look exactly the same a hundred years from now. I did an experimental painting a while ago where I tried to mix neon colours and succeeded. I feel like that is something you wouldnt be able to do with the cotman line.

How did I ever not see this video before. This is great help because I've been trying to find a video that used more than 1 type of watercolor on the same piece of work being made. And I've been learning how different materials used, mainly which types of papers, work best for each type of watercolor paints. I've also learned how much I've forgotten over the years, so I'm both nervous and intrigued to relearn and learn new tips to watercolor.

Being able to draw & understanding values & perception really is the base of all art works like this. Once you are able to get the idea down on paper... it’s all just rolling with the punches from there. Really cool. I can’t draw all that well tbh, I have trouble with depth or scale or something, but if I take a really long time, lots of patience & a lot of erasing lol I can get something half okay down. However, it’s nothing like this. I haven’t tried to experiment with painting any of it tho, but I might after seeing these fun little vids he’s done. This seems like a super fun thing to try.

Ok Jazza, you mentioned not knowing what type of paints the pébéo watercolor aquarelle fine paints were. Most watercolor artists, use either paints similar to those, or the tube paints or a combination of both (most not all). The aquarelle would just be considered normal pan watercolors, nothing that special. The cheaper pans you had are essentially the same type of thing but are lower in quality, with more binder-to-pigment, which is why they are comparatively chalky and less “waxy” as you described the other pan paints. There is a lot of variation in watercolors. Every artist has different preferences in what paint they like best, and what works for them. All of these paints seem pretty solid for someone just starting out.

The tube watercolors work best when you dilute them with water on a palette. When glazing, layering the paint, let the paint dry completely before adding the next layer. It turned out great!

Those "waxy ones" are called Semi-solid watercolors, and they're my favorite type of watercolor specifically if I'm painting a flatwash painting.

Actually, Jazza, watercolour can be quite challenging, it's not the easiest medium, and for a 'newbie' you did better than I do after years of trying!! The cheaper pan-paints are ideal for beginners, but they're not archival, so people say they can fade in the light. Personally, I like the bloom 'cloud' effect, but, yeah, It has to be intentional. For the most dramatically different effects check out British artist Jean Haines. Her work might appeal to you 🙂 Oh! And, don't worry about rules!! Best way is always to learn for yourself without too much external influence

heres just some general tips (i'm not a professional but I've been practicing with watercolors for a while now) for anyone, not just jazza - dont work on one small area at a time, jump around, because you'll end up having colors leak into other areas you dont want if you dont wait to dry - dont use scotch tape, it will tear your paper. use masking tape or painters tape, and i'd suggest sticking it to your shirt a couple times before taping down the paper just to get rid of any extra stick. - white watercolor can also be used to make others more opaque - id suggest mixing colors on the side by picking colors up from the pots/pans and laying them down on the lids both the pans sets came with, watercolors allow you to have a diverse color range - the paints in the white tin are called half-pans - use 300 gsm paper or more, it will usually say somewhere on the front of the pad what gsm it is. printer paper will not work because it is very thin and can't hold water. even then, you can't give many layers with 300 gsm. Arche's is a very expensive brand but worth the investment, because it has a high cotton count and can take a lot of water. - if you plan to do big pieces, stretch your paper. you do this by taping down the paper and coating it in water. theres videos on this. - if you can, find a moveable surface like a wood board or something to tape yoru piece onto so you can turn it if you need to. - be careful with pans and such because they may crack, if it happens you can just meld it with water. - you can use tubes to fill empty half pans but you may need to mix it with a solution since they aren't normally created for that. - always work from light to dark and dont try to do several layers quickly, some watercolors will take longer to dry depending on how much water you use and on the paint itself. - if you use liner pens, test beforehand on scrap paper to see if they will bleed. you really should do this with any supply, but it's sad when you learn in the middle of a doodle you're going to have a muddy mess. also let the pens dry for a while. if they arent waterproof you could always paint first and let it dry, and line over it. and i'd suggest colored liners, black is very harsh unless it's the look you're going for. that's all i've learn so far, good luck to anyone else who tries watercolors!
