Botanical gardens have their origins in a time when people couldn't see tropical plants on television or easily travel somewhere warmer. So things were grown locally in greenhouses. Even stuff like citrus fruits and tomatoes were grown for looks instead of eating at first. Originally this was done by nobles to show off. Later gardens such as this were open to the public. This is not typical for a "German zoo" though. A regular zoo has far less emphasis on plants

Wilhelma is a real old zoo, there are many redwood trees from the usa. King Wilhelm I or II had seeds from USA and cultivated them in Stuttgart, but they had too many so they planted them all over Baden-Württemberg, even in a forest close to Schwäbisch Hall in my home town

I always love visiting the Wilhelma, the prices are a bit steep, but they have to pay the bills somehow and you can take your time and stay all day long, take a tour through the greenhouses, see the feeding of the sealions, take a nice stroll uphill and relax on the Liegewiese, eat some good classic German food at the restaurant at the Schaubauernhof, feed the baby goats, get some ice cream and then see the other half of the park on your way down, just awesome :) I also recommend visiting the BlüBa (Blühendes Barock) and the fairytale garden in Ludwigsburg.

Of course there is a normal farm at the upper end (you walk past that restaurant) and you will see the cutest little baby goats. You can feed them. Also other farm animals. The impressive thing about the botanical zoological garden is his architecture and it was the first botanical zoological garden in Germany or even Europe. Do some research on wikipedia. My favourite place is the tropical house. It is relatively new. Greetings from a Swabian who lives 10 km from the Wilhelma. Hey Nick, I usually don´t support going to any events where animals are being held captive, but this was a pretty cool video. Loved the shots you chose, and the music to go with the different animals. Good to see you guys had fun. ;-)
@TrioInfernaleTAT5 жыл бұрын
I am totally against events where animals are not held according to their nature, too. And their might be a lot of zoos all over the world where animals are just shown for fun. However, German "Zoos" and "Tierparks" are constanly working on improving the conditions for the animals living there - as far as I know. For achieving this, a lot of them actually reduce the number of different animals they have. And most importantly, today a lot of endangered species would already have been exterminated without zoos.
@swanpride5 жыл бұрын
German Zoos aren't really mainly about holding animals captive for show anymore. They have an important function in animals protection with their breeding programs, their research (which can help to treat animals in the wild) and the enclosures tend to be quite big (like, sometimes they are so big that you need an monocular to even see them. Plus, this isn't even a Zoo, it's a botanic garden which also happens to have some animals. Even for visitors it is less about showing off and more about educating them about the animals in question.

I love zoos. If it weren’t for them, humans would never have a chance to be introduced to species that they were not familiar with. Nobody would care if we were depleting rainforests or fish. So they serve a valuable educational purpose. No longer are they showplaces for aristocracy, but rather living dioramas to show us biomes that are at risk. Many zoos are also instrumental in preserving endangered species. They are not involved in illegal trade of animals or animal products. If you want to do anything about proper stewardship of animals, how about making parrot taxidermy illegal in Germany? I have seen several examples of it only a few kilometers away at florist shops near the Markethalle in Stuttgart. It is absolutely repellent. This makes ME salty, not the entrance fee to the zoo. Sorry for the crankiness, but I hate double standards. I grew up next to the best zoo in the world; the San Diego Zoo. I also have a parrot as a best friend. He is CITES registered and chipped. He is spoiled beyond belief too. All people must be good stewards of their own animals and cognizant of their own actions on the planet. Zoos help with understanding this. Nalf, this is not directed at you, but at a couple comments.

Nalf, comment from M mmm below said that your videos are like memories, and asked if you ever watched them. God I hope not, I’ve spray painted graffiti all over your old vlogs. Damn. Totally vandalized. Tags everywhere. You REALLY need to move to a better neighborhood. Tarantula. Shhhhhhh, don’t want to upset the other viewers so I’ll say it very quietly....on tippy toes.... kill🕷 Beautiful filming. Really lovely. I even got tranquil for a while. Brain on pause. I don’t like zoos on principle. I can understand the need for breeding programs 🐢 for endangered species, but there’s really no need to round up other animals and dump them in enclosures so we can look at them. When they’re not on exhibit their spaces aren’t like their natural environment at all, by necessity they have to be easily cleaned and allow caretakers access to the animal. Let’s not even get into the amount of space that large mammals, like elephants or giraffes, would normally inhabit. I would argue that the kind of people that support animal welfare legislation and groups were always the kind of person that would do that, and didn’t need zoos to become sensitized. The rest of humanity can just watch animals on film. Speaking of, I enjoyed yours. You’ve got a gift for filming animals y’know: talent + technique + natural affinity for animals = very watchable content. Maybe it’s time for Nalf to go wild and build a little duck blind down by the water (as opposed to what, downtown?) in Schwabisch Hall and get some rare duck footage. 🦆
