As you get higher to the surface, the pressure around you get less and less, so if it happens too fast then the nitrogen that was dissolved in your tissue/blood is suddenly released and results in bubbles. You can get paralyzed or get brain damage, but I didn't know you could literally die...that may just be for the movie.

17:40 Marine Sci degree here! When diving, as the pressure builds, gasses dissolved into your bloodstream like nitrogen. But if you ascend too quickly the gasses will expand rapidly, causing bubbles in your bloodstream! This is called decompression sickness or the bends. This can be treated but in some cases you can die from it. Hope this helps!

As a black person, I do have to admit that I've gone swimming with sharks but it was bull sharks and they never got that close to us. Also we just free-swam in the ocean holding onto a rope (with life vests and snorkel gear to duck under to see the sharks), we decided not to go with the cage cus it actually looked scarier. It was fun and adventurous but I don't think I'd do it again, especially not with great white sharks.
