The moment where Spock is talking about leaving his commendations to the crew of the Enterprise and when Kirk recommends commendations for his crew, you can see the two are, both, thinking the same thing; the welfare, admiration and respect for their fellow crew. 🥲

This is secrelt one of the most important Spock episodes; When he said, their logic would not have allowed them to believe they were being killed. I think this incident was a major leap forward in Spock's personal development because of that realization about the problems with Vulcan logic.

A fun episode for sure because the writing between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy is solid in this one for sure. And totally forgot about Kirk eyeing one of his female officers almost like a, "Star Fleet Comm. if you don't let us get some shore leave, I'm gonna forget certain regulations and start remembering I'm on a ship full if beautiful women."

I've always enjoyed this episode because it does such a good job at the character development and relationships: Kirk, Spock and Bones all willing to go on the "suicide" mission; Kirk agonizing over which one to send; the Spock/McCoy dialogue; the commendations; Kirk coming up with the solution to kill the thing. It showcases everything we love about the characters. Lt. Kyle gets to be out of the transporter room, although Kirk mispronounces his name as "Kowal." Also, a meme is born out of the McCoy and Kirk nods after "Shut up Spock, we're rescuing you!" And, yes, there is a deep respect and caring not just between Spock and McCoy but also including all the senior bridge officers. Someone who goes straight to the TOS films without having seen the series doesn't get the full impact of what the characters have been through together before then and how much it determines their later actions.

You said something early on about the crew reacting to the loss of the Intriped. Uhura's in the background pinching her nose. I always read that scene as the crew feeling their utter exhaustion after hearing the news that "no one goes home before we get this project done." So much good character work here. I love that McCoy admit he doesn't understand Vulcan dignity. It makes it seem like McCoy is trying to understand Vulcans.

Great reaction again. This is character driven episode of how the crew, Kirk, Spock and McCoy deal with the impending doom ahead, how the different personality traits of each character come to the fore, and how any one of them would sacrifice themselves for the others, it's a real actors episode, something which has always been apparent to me being an actor myself.

While I feel Doomsday Machine was a better episode overall, Immunity Syndrome is one of my favorites to revisit, as well particularly for the character stuff. It's a great bottle show, too - doesn't need too much in the special effects for the space amoeba and just letting the character dynamics and tenseness of the situation drive things forward.
@cylelle376

I know a lot of fans prefer The Doomsday Machine, but I've always thought The Immunity Syndrome was the better of the two 'planet-killer' episodes. For me, Doomsday missed a trick by never going back to McCoy after the tremendous scene where he gets ordered from the bridge by Decker after his aborted attempt to prevent him from taking command and last emotional appeal to Spock ("You know I'm right!"). Even if the shooting schedule didn't allow any more time with DeForest Kelley, they could have added a line from Spock asking Uhura to let Dr. McCoy know he was sending Decker to him, or a line from Uhura telling Spock that McCoy was reporting Decker never made it to Sickbay (or both). The lack of any further reference to McCoy just feels wrong to me and detracts from an otherwise excellent episode.

In this episode I liked the giant space amoeba concept. It considers possible different size scale (large or small) for extraterrestrial life, though terrestrial amoeba cannot exist this expanded. The Horta in Devil in the Dark, and the two creatures in Catspaw also demonstrate very different lifeforms in the Star Trek Universe.

17:36 That's one of the beautiful things about Episodic television, and it has always ALWAYS been something of an inherent weakness to ths serialised stuff we get today. You can't really "break form" when telling a longer story. You can, but you can't. Not really. I mean, Breaking Bad gets shit on a lot for its episode relating to the fly in the lab, because it seems "out of place." Whereas TOS can do a murder mystery, an action show, a comedy, and then hti you with lovecraftian space creatures and character exploration. I know you guys are doing a lot of Science Fiction these days and i'm sure you want to do other things, but I would strongly suggest checking out The Twilgiht Zone. The original. It's so good. There are people that to this day still consider it one of the best television shows ever made.

This is by far one of my top ten episodes. I think what is frustrating to many who are just starting to watch these older STOS episodes, is that they are comparing the story writing from back then to everything that has come after it.of course things have progressed in terms of storytelling character development etc... but watching these shows when you were growing up was like Gold, there was no internet not even VHS or DVD to rewatch them so... there were some duds as well but when it came to an episode that was all on Ship, I think they were a challenge to make it work well.Great honest reactions keep going.

I remember getting into Trek in the early 70's (around 73 when I was 5) when it was on local tv 5 evenings a week as counter to the local news. By the late 70's (post 1975) Trek (at least in Minneapolis when I grew up) had settled into being a Sunday afternoon staple where the series run would play through twice over a year,then be put on the shelf for a year,before getting another run. If you missed an episode. You may not see it for 2 years.Many epsiodes might be seen every 4 years because bigger kids tended to hang out outside on weekends,so you had to read the TV guide and plan ahead to watch a specific epsiode.

Like I said earlier with "The Doomsday Machine", this is one of my top five TOS episodes, and top 10 all-time Star Trek. The essence of space exploration isn't finding the facial prosthetic of the week, but things totally outside our experience. Braving the cold dark vacuum of space with just the best engineered ship under you and your wits and guts for everything you can encounter makes for the best sci-fi. A good comparison is Spock's comment about the last thing the Vulcan crew of the Intrepid felt at the end - "Astonishment" - how the unknown can conquer your biases, or you can rise to the challenge, and, in good ol' Kirk fashion, think on your feet and outside the box. Again, there is no conversation with the space amoeba. Just figure out how to survive, and do it. Sure, you can "meta" the whole thing about how the series isn't going to off the main characters and everything will be alright, but as a kid watching this, in the era of creepy sci-fi where lots of people were being off'ed in the movies, it's all scary. But, like so many Star Trek kids watching this, there was always the fascination about the tech and science discussions, and studying and learning about the new alien creature or tech, and how to solve the puzzle to overcome it. A lot of people poo-poo the techie spacey jargon, but that was done really well with many expert consultants (e.g. acetylcholine test), and in a believable and realistic sense, where you wanted to learn all about it, too.

Many of us grew up with Star Trek TOS before the movies came out, but most people do not watch the this series in order from episode 1 to episode 79! The original Star Trek has always been one of favorite tv shows, I even went to a Star Trek convention in 1976 and still have the Official Souvenir Program from the event. I think that because this one is more dialog driven, and with some good lines, it adds to the re-watchablitiy of it. It adds to why it's one of the fan favorites. You start to anticipate the lines, and start saying them with the characters - just as I did seeing this with you. BTW, the original effects of the space amoeba is very similar looking to what they did here with the new CGI. They really could have just left the original graphics, which I always thought looked pretty cool (I think it was colored gels or something layered with some liquid between them - or something like that). The only thing they didn't originally do was have a dark Enterprise. It was brightly lit up as usual since they simply used the stock footage of the model fully lit up with stage lights. They didn't go back to film new footage with the model in a darkened studio. If fact, by this point, there was no more new footage of the model for the rest of the show - the last of it shot for "The Trouble with Tribbles". There is some never-before-seen footage that shows up in at the beginning of a mid-third season episode, but that was just existing footage from the second season that hadn't been used up to that point. Just for a bit of history - the Enterprise model had most of it's scenes shot mostly in the first season and only a few more done in the second season. They made a bunch of different fly-bys, a few stationary side shots, overhead shots, and some "come right at you" shots. All on a blue-screen stage used as stock footage that could be composited into any background or situation they needed for any particular episode. Because the model was 11-foot long, with a just over 5 foot diameter saucer, it was a bit unwieldy. And it was mounted on one pipe stand that used a studio camera tilt base to angle it as needed. They didn't want to mess with that thing any more than they had to. It was bad enough that one of the engine nacelles was already sagging in the back in the first season while shooting "Space Seed". That had specific new footage for that episode shot because they built the Botany Bay model and filmed the two ships together on the blue-screen stage. It was put in storage at the middle of the second season and only taken out once in '72 for an exhibit at Golden West College at Huntington Beach CA., and later in '74 when it made the trek to the Smithsonian in D.C. where it rests to this day (and went through at least 4 restorations during it's time there - the last and most meticulously done restoration took nearly 2 years and finished in July 2016). But, really, since you are watching the remastered version, none of that matters, does it? You aren't seeing the original model or any of the original effects.
@Randall1001

Great episode, one of my faves. One of the second season eps that got approved in part because of budget constraints; the entire thing takes place on the Enterprise, and thus no new sets to build. We'll see more of that in Season 3, as the budget was cut even more. All of it a huge shame (along with the cancellation of the series finally) because it was so unnecessary. TOS aired at a time before Nielsen (the ratings company) had started monitoring/compiling specific data about age groups and professions that watched various series. When they were later able to look back, in the mid-70s, at TOS' original run and the data they had for it, the show that they had at first labeled a failure had, in fact, been a huge success with young people--teens, early 20 year olds, college students... and professionals (teachers, scientists, engineers, etc). Nielsen would have designated TOS a "hit" had they been keeping better track of that data in the late 60s.

I would add that when Star Trek hit syndication in the early 70's,local TV stations put Star Trek on during early evening times as counter-programing to local and national news. They found that families with young children would allow their kids to watch Trek as an SCI-FI adventure alternative to the news,when back during the original run,Trek was on during prime time when young children were already in bed. A whole generation of Gen Xers (post 1964) who were too young to have seen (or at least be aware they were watching) Trek in the original 60's run, were converted into life long fans when Trek was made accessable to families with young children in the early to mid 70's.

I've always liked this episode because of the character interaction, and the ideas about who is invading whom. Also, this episode has been called a "bottle episode," because there were no guest stars, no location shots, and no extra sets required. In other words, it was shot with a lesser budget. Still pretty good in my opinion. Star Trek is always the best when they deal with the unknown.

To the best of my recollection over 30 years later, this was the first TOS episode I ever saw, when I was about 11 years old. In fact, I think I was lucky enough to tune in late and see only the more exciting second half. (I discovered Star Trek by watching it on a local station that alternated TOS and TNG episodes in syndication; my first TNG episode was “Peak Performance,” from Season 2 of that show.) What immediately drew me in to TOS was the depiction of Spock, a nerd (like me) who was capable of profound acts of courage and who had friends who cared deeply about him. “The Immunity Syndrome” also effortlessly reveals a great deal about the series’ central characters and their relationships with each other. The events of this episode’s cold open may be part of the reason I find some of what happens in one of the much later Star Trek movies incomprehensible and enraging. Also, remember the Enterprise’s encounter with a “zone of darkness” in this episode: it sets up one of the most annoying inter-series continuity errors in a later version of Star Trek. Regarding the Enterprise’s previous “exhausting mission”, in production order “The Immunity Syndrome” followed on from “Obsession”, which was probably an even more exhausting experience than “A Piece of the Action”. Despite George Takei’s continued absence, the TOS ensemble is at its absolute peak in this episode, with even the subtlest flickers of expression on the actors’ faces reflecting their deep understanding of their characters and their relationships to one another - and that includes underwritten characters such as Uhura, who by this point has become an iconic and unforgettable character largely due to Nichelle Nichols’ performance. (Just look at the mingled fear and hope on her face at one point when she thinks Spock might be alive but is not sure.) During the scene with Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, and three unnamed officers in the briefing room, presumably Uhura, Chekov and Kyle are still on the bridge. It’s nice to imagine that Uhura was in acting command at that point, although NBC would never have shown that in 1968 for fear of appearing too “woke”. Also, one of the much later Star Trek series possibly indicates that Kyle has served on the Enterprise longer than Uhura, although his place in the command structure is lower than hers. This is a complex question, which is also related to issues of “wokeness” and which we can hash out when we get to that series in seven or eight years.

This is one of my favorites and is probably, like "The Doomsday Machine" a great "Bottle" episode. (A "Bottle" episode lets them use the sets from the series with no other sets needing to be built or guest stars). So in the question of budget, this was a relatively cheap episode to produce. Once anecdote relating to this episode is that a college professor, who was a fan, managed to find a slide with a picture of the "space Amoeba" on it and slipped it into his slide show test on identifying amoeba and other denizens of the microscopic world. Some students recognized it, others struggled to identify this mysterious creature.

This was one of my favourites when I was young. I watched this the first time they had us look at a paramecium under a microscope in elementary school. I sort of liked the idea of a creature impinging from a negative reality universe, such as the one that Lazerus had come from. The effect of all this, seen again when different universes collide in the Tholian web was something that I got to use in a lot of the fantasy RPG's I've run over the years when universes collide. I thought a nice solid chase the monster episode that had a better resolve than most and some great spock-bones moments. It doesn't make it to the top of my list just because it reminds a little too much of the Doomsday Device and Obsession and to a lesser extent the Lights of Zetar or even The Ultimate Computer though in that one the Enterprise is the ravening monster careening through the galaxy. Give it a 17 out of 20 which puts it in the top five for this year for me and tied for 18th overall with the aforementioned Doomsday Machine, Errand of Mercy and Squire of Gothos. Always enjoyed the teaser for this one, dragged me right in. Go Nimoy!! The build up to the monster was nicely paced. Love the vulcan music for Spock's log entry. Loved the Biological/medical plot element.

As a 60 year old I'm surprised just how well it stands up today overall as a show and for me sadly watching older shows that are well written like this highlights me for how dire most shows are today and this is someone who sat through 2 episodes of that amazon gem Rings of Power. last week..... Scripting and character development seem to be a serious problem (for me anyway) with today's TV....

I'm honestly kind of horrified at how sloppy, childish, and whiny the characters in the newer ST shows are. There's no indication that they're on a military vessel at all - they act like they're feuding in middle school, not taking part in an important interstellar mission.

@@rogershore3128 I've given up, frankly. I don't watch ANY genre shows at all anymore - either they suck, or they get abandoned by the originators out of boredom and then they fall apart. What's the point? I'd rather go back and rewatch GOOD shows. I've taken to binging older shows that I never got into before, and that works perfectly for me.

A great episode, I know a space omega is dumb, but the big three verbally jousting over who will go was great. Modern storylines would have some all powerful fleet or entity that the heroes figure out how to vanquish in 90 minutes. So for me, my bs meter goes off when a complex problem is solved in a 40 minute tv episode. Give this episode it's props, especially for the time frame it came out of, the cold war. Roddenberry could have gone the easy predictable route.. It seems every 60s tv show had the Russians as the nemesis. Gene could have gone Romulan or Klingon, which basically would have been the Russian metaphor.

The budget in that season at times was really low so they had to stick with basic ship sets so they could put more into the 'creature' effects.

Can we all pause one moment to reflect on the possibility that maybe star travel isn't so hard after all? So far on this show we've had blobby bats at the end of season one, then an evil bloodsucking cloud, and now a planet-sized paramecium with its own Zone of Darkness. Living creatures are zipping across the light-years like they're nothing. If we were ever to study any of these organisms instead of blowing them up with antimatter, would we discover some strange new starship drive? Just a thought. I appreciated "Thank you, Captain McCoy." The remainder of this season is fairly interesting. Thank you, TA. Steady as she goes, warp factor two.

Kirk/Shatner as usual, but not always, mispronounces Kyle's name. His mispronunciations were so frequent of crew names that the writers intentionally put it into the script of "Space Seed."

I like this episode. It's a really fun watch containing all the typical Star Trek elements. But if you took high school physics, you REALLY need to suspend belief to get past the scaling factor of single-cell organisms. There's an upper limit. It's similar to the reason why we don't have, for example, 50' spiders.

Heres a thing, given the budget the being thrown around the bridge was the most cost effective thing they could do to show a hit. It was great it was exciting. Then it got memed and next Gen avoided it like Covid. That show really suffered for that. For me it just undelined it was a static set. The entire 1st season i only liked Arsenal of Freedom.
